Hello! I'm trying to find a meet a capybara experience thing where you can stroke them (if the capybaras are cool with it). I've seen a few but not convinced they are not just feed from a distance ones. Ideally in South of England but potentially willing to go to far north i.e. north of the M4. Thank you!

Thank you. Narrowed it down to here and All Things Wild. Just going go check the reviews first!

My daughter and I did the capybara experience at All Things Wild. It was very good, you went in with them and fed them and could stroke them and take pictures but did run off at least little noise and also they were in with the Rhea birds and they kept trying to pinch the food from you!

They run off at the least little noise because being around humans can be stressful. They are living creatures and should not be used as entertainment for ignorant people who want a 'fun' experience.

Do they have capybaras there? They have tapirs but I've never seen a capybara. Howletts have capybaras.

I would get pets at home to let you stroke a guinea pig and tell them it's a pigmy capybara.

Howletts have capybaras

Not any more they don’t.

@Fgfgfg You've confirmed what I had misgivings about.

I got this for my DH a few years back. Was at Drusillas and it was epic! He got to feed them and stroke them

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/12/2025 20:53

There was an escaped one seen by the River Chew a couple of years ago. People were asked not to approach it.

Thetrickcyclist · 21/12/2025 20:54

Poor things. They're wild animals not "experiences" to satisfy the latest social media trend. Just because they seem calm doesn't mean it's right to pet them

Can you not pet a donkey? They're friendly too, you know.

Jimmy's farm in Suffolk offer this type
of experience.

FFS, they look like giant rats, why would you want to stroke one?

They are the most adorable and lovable rodents i have ever seen. I still remember tne first time i ever saw a capybara at Bristol zoo.

I'm not sure stroking tjem is a good idea or fun for the capybara but just look at that little face:

@Barrellturn definitely capybara , they are still advertising the experience . I’m not a fan of Howletts .

I'm racking my brains now. Where the hell is the capybara I've apparently been walking past for years 😂

Probably at meltdown corner, just where dc decide they are hungry and upset I won't pay for them to go on the stupid cars.

samlovesdilys · 22/12/2025 07:17

Cotswold wildlife park do a zoo keeer day where feeding/petting capybaras is part of the session, they have 2 babies at the moment. My son loved it and would happily do it every year if allowed!!

Capybaras are unlikely the happy about being stroked even if they don't make that obvious to you.

I was just thinking about how the capybara feels about it. They are wild animals, not pets.

I have had a lemur jump on my shoulder in an enclosure you could walk through, but it was very much the lemur's choice to do that.

There are lots of capybaras at Dartmoor Zoo, but I don't know if you can stroke them. (It's the zoo in the film We bought a Zoo)
