I don’t eat meat, but I thought it would be nice to make the resident carnivores some roast beef alongside the turkey this year. The trouble is, I don’t know where to start - what to buy, or best way to cook it. It would only need to be a small amount, for three people. Can anyone please advise? I’d be willing to spend a bit on naice meat, and I have an air fryer as well as an oven. Thank you!

Get a bit of rolled brisket/salmon cut silverside as it’s best for slow roasting/cooking.

Your timing of the oven/slow cooker will depend on the weight of meat and how your visitors like it(medium/rare/well done)

Put the joint in the slow cooker with some water(roughly 200-250ml).
If using oven put it in the casserole dish with liquid.
Liquid with meat juice is used for making gravy later.

Before serving let the meat rest covered for 20-30 minutes then cut up and serve

If its only for 3 why not buy some really good steak?

BasiliskStare · 21/12/2025 17:00

Yes another idea would to buy 3 fillet steaks from M&S which can be basted in a bit of oil and then cooked in a hot pan ( v quick ) and then sliced and kept in tin foil to rest. (I don't have a slow cooker so can advise on that ) Just an idea

Best wishes however it goes

A small roasting joint won’t take long in the oven. I always follow Delia’s roasting times avd it’s always worked out beautifully.

I agree a small pot roast would be easiest as you can do it in advance and it will be ready when you are eg I’ve used this recipe and it was lovely, I got a ready rolled joint of brisket from asda

you dont need the swede
Hope you have a lovely day

English Pot-roast

You could use topside or silverside for this, but rolled brisket has the best flavour of all. The Delia Online Cookery School: Watch how to make Perfect Mashed Potatoes. Press the image to play.

Thank you, I didn’t think of steak as going along with a roast dinner, I was assuming some sort of joint like my mum used to make. I’ll look into it though.

Cheers - unfortunately I know one of them isn’t keen on brisket, despite liking roast beef.

Thank you - can you roast brisket then? I thought it was meant to be boiled. When I had a quick look in the supermarket I saw topside joints, would that be good too?

Also - I don’t have a slow cooker so it will be oven or air fryer (if that’s a thing!) as one person doesn’t like pot roast/brisket.

I wouldn’t personally roast Brisket as it is best cooked long and slow.

gogomomo2 · 21/12/2025 19:01

If you are going to cook turkey for them then I would just flash fry steak on the side, you really don’t need the beef as well so small is better

zeebra · 21/12/2025 19:07

Decent beef would be rump, fillet or rib of beef. Unless you want tough meat, I would stick to one of the first 3. Brisket is not what you want. Silverside is variable too.

Slow pot roasted brisket is not tough. just depends how you want to cook it. If I was going to a vegetarian’s house for Christmas I would be more than happy with just turkey though.

Thanks all. I keep hearing people say they cook multiple meats on Christmas Day and thought my carnivores might be missing out 😁 I think I’ll go for the steak idea, thanks again. Merry Christmas!
