Hello everyone,
I'm looking for some gift inspiration for my boyfriend. We've been dating for 10 months, so this is our first Christmas together and I want to get it right!
He's someone who appreciates nice things and quality, but I'm a bit stuck on what's appropriate at this stage - don't want to go too over the top or too underwhelming.
What have others done for a first Christmas together? Any gifts that went down particularly well (or badly!)?
Budget-wise I'm thinking around £400, but I'm really just after ideas and experiences.
Thanks in advance! x

£400 seems quite over the top for someone who's not try to go too over the top!! or maybe i'm just tight?
give us some clues.....age, hobbies, interests??
Similar situation last year I bought him one silly cheap item that we're always joking about, something edible and something I knew he'd mentioned (hobby related) but probably wouldn't have bought himself.

There are some highly desirable cashmere jumpers at https://riseandfall.co/ Luxe Christmas jumper could strike the right note - practical but a cut above what lots of people would buy for themselves. My DH always likes the clothes I give him because my taste is more daring than his.

I bought my nephew a trip round the Silverstone track in a formula one car. He loved it https://www.virginexperiencedays.co.uk/product/silverstone-formula-single-seater-museum-for-two-

That a lot, unless you have an inkling that he’s spending a similar amount I would suggest reducing to a more manageable amount. I bought my now dh a book, favourite tipple, chocolates (made them myself) and a band t shirt, under £100 and he had got me similar quantity and price of items.

schoolfriend · 16/12/2025 15:17

Hmmm...Do you have reason to think he will be spending a similar amount on you? I think it might be embarrassing for you both if he's spent 50 quid and you've spent 400.

IdaGlossop · 16/12/2025 15:20

Reading these posts, I realise I thought £400 seemed a lot but didn't question it.

My first Christmas present to DH was a Simply Human bin, chosen because we were just friends at that point and I didn't want him to feel pursued.

DinoLil · 16/12/2025 15:24

£400?!! I've not spent that much in total for my whole family!

Amazon vouchers are always useful

Indeed. But not very thoughtful.

PermanentTemporary · 16/12/2025 15:29

£400 is insane!

Agree re cashmere jumper. Long ago I bought a dp an antique cocktail shaker which went down well - could give with ingredients for a cocktail.

Something personal always best. I bought dp and I his ‘n’ hers top of the range litter pickers early on. We both hate litter and like a walk.

I have bought DH a box for his watch, bracelet thing, spare Apple Watch strap etc, a Pret gift card as he always moans about how expensive his lunch is on office days (revised to make his own or head somewhere cheaper 🤷🏻‍♀️) an rfid card holder as his wallet looks really bulky in his pocket, a book, chocolate coins and PJ’s…any of these work?

Thanks - these are lovely, on my list now, I think he would like the zip one.

And what?? 😬I don't buy to receive so it is irrelevant how much he will spend on me.

lol re Amazon voucher 🤣

I bought my OH a selection of 4 Creed fragrances and he really liked those. What about a night st one of the Pig hotels if you are anywhere in the lower 1/3 of the country? Treat for you both then 😄😄

Love the watch box, and the apple strap - Thanks for the ideas x

You would think every hospital had a decent crèche

I've never heard of the Pig hotels - they look gorgeous... Thank you 🥰

I bought DH one year a lovely leather hold-all (sort out weekend size). That went down well

BashfulClam · 16/12/2025 16:36

Oh yeah the F1 experience is great if he is into cars at all. My PIL bought DH one at Ingliston near Edinburgh, he loved it. We made a day of it, he went and Fannied around in fast cars then we had lunch. Also you can buy a flight lesson online.

familyissues12345 · 16/12/2025 16:39

A nice bottle of wine and a pair of glasses?

Wishimaywishimight · 16/12/2025 16:42

I remember a 1st Christmas loooong ago with a boyfriend of about 6/7 months. From memory I gave him a jumper, a CD, his favourite aftershave chocolates, maybe some other bits too. He gave me the world's smallest stuffed toy ( I was in my early 20's!).

I agree that you don't give to receive bit I was madly in love and quite gutted he clearly wasn't and had picked up a bit of tat in a pound shop or petrol station.

schoolfriend · 16/12/2025 16:50

And what??

Just what I said in my post - it might be embarrassing for him if he's under spent by comparison. My point wasn't about giving to receive. Anyway, if you are happy with it, that's great, I am sure he will appreciate it.

I saw someone mention The Pig Hotels. It depends on where you are of course but The Pig on The Beach is lovely

Lifelover16 · 16/12/2025 16:59

Why don’t you just ask him? His expectations might be totally different from yours. Ask him whether you buy presents for each other, or go for a weekend away or romantic meal? Or both?

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 16/12/2025 17:25

£400 is an awful lot of money, unless you are both really high earners. I spend £200 on my husband.

justgottadoit · 16/12/2025 17:31

My new partner (of four months) is getting some adult Lego (he likes building things!) and a warm wool scarf. I’m spending around £70 on him and mentioned that as a budget
