Do you think a hamper at Christmas is a boring present ?

Basically me and my friend have reached a time now (40) where we have everything.
There’s nothing we really need so for Christmas this year I’m making her a hamper.
Im gonna get some nice bits from M&S (cake ,biscuits ,nice chutney etc etc ) I’ve got her a Yankee candle (her fav smell ) some nice chocolates but my partner has said it’s a “boring “
gift .
Ive asked her all year as she has me and we couldn’t think of anything.
Rather than buy her things she doesn’t want or need ..I thought a nice hamper (with things she likes ) would be nice ?
or is it boring ?

Love a hamper but not a Yankee candle.

We’ve made hampers for family before and they always go down well. We usually include things they like but would necessarily buy - fancier versions of every day things.
for non alcohol drinkers we found fancy cordials and grown up soft drinks to include which made it really personal for them

I’d love to receive one, a lot of thought goes into a gift like that

I do find a hamper quite boring to receive when it’s things like chutney, cake, biscuits and cheese that I could just buy for myself anyway. I just can’t get hugely excited about what are essentially groceries.

The only hamper I think we’ve received that we really loved was one that DP’s sister made up for us. It was full of things we’d never seen or heard of before, which were all from a part of the world we’d visited that year. Sweet and savoury snacks, wine, some smoked fish etc, all from a shop near SIL that happened to specialise in that region’s food. It was great as it was interesting stuff that we couldn’t easily have bought ourselves.

However, this is your friend and you know her better than we do! Plenty of people do like a hamper.

If there is nothing you need/want. Then a hamper is a nice idea. However with premade hampers there is always the risk that something will go to waste if it includes something they don't like. Make your own, so no wasted food.

Wow such a mixed reaction on here! I’d love a hamper but never had one! It’s making me worried now that I’ve just done one for our Christmas guests in our Yorkshire holiday cottage. I spent the weekend sourcing lots of Yorkshire foodie treats to fill it with. I really hope they like it and don’t think it’s naff🙈

Oh, a hamper is lovely to put in for Airbnb guests. I wouldn’t get excited about receiving one as a present from a friend, but when you get something like that in a holiday cottage it’s totally different. It’s a little extra thing that you weren’t expecting, and if you’re staying away somewhere you don’t have your own cupboards full of stuff sitting there already. It’s nice to have some things to eat in a holiday cottage that you don’t have to shop for. It’s very different to opening one as a Christmas present at home!

Nope. I would love this!

Littlebuddh · 17/12/2025 12:53

Some people like hampers some dont.
I dont like them i think they are over priced, and crap.
If your making one make sure it's stuff that person likes.

The candy canes were a nice touch, I might add some to DD's. Did the girl like it?

I've got DD a little cat shaped tea infuser to go with her hamper, it's very cute

Loved it 😊

A hamper isn’t boring at all especially when there’s a lot of thought gone into it.

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 17/12/2025 18:15

I love a hamper! However, I'd probably want it with things from different places that had been carefully thought through, or chosen for a reason. I absolutely love alan ducasse chocolates, and I love a truffle mayonnaise and an expensive olive oil from a small producer - they're the types of treats I'd not normally get myself because theyre hard to find and expensive, rather than just some bits from M and S which I might grab when I'm near a food hall. Equally, she's your friend so I'm guessing you know her well and you know what she just grabs for herself vs whats a really serious treat. I'd definitely rather have a hamper of things to use than just "stuff" to sit around my house, I'd go with less is more and pick a few extremely nice things she'd normally not buy, rather than loads of bits from a supermarket (don't get me wrong, m and s is a nice supermarket, but it is still a supermaket)

I just did this for a friend, I found things all from local independent businesses and she loved it! Also used a bread basket and cloth napkin (only things not from a small independent!) instead of a hamper with filler, so it would hopefully get more use. Doing the same for my PIL!

Edit: lol sorry for shouting

What a lovey kind thoughtful gift.

if you have the finances to do this then carry on especially as you both have Christmas birthdays and are probably overlooked for celebrating that at times!

Maybe future years you could add an experience into June to make up for your birthdays. And still do a Christmas spa!
