I want to buy my son some miniatures to paint for dnd. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips? There seem to be a lot available but not sure if it’s best to get ‘official’ ones or just a selection or different figures.
Thanks!

In my experience, the figures wanted will depend very much on the game and what sort of creatures are involved.

I would say this is a good situation for a voucher and to let him choose for himself!

Do you know if he's a DM or a player? If he's a DM then a set of villagers or heroes or monsters would be helpful and you can usually find those on Amazon, they have a selection of different races and classes to use as NPCs. If he's a player, do you know what species and class he plays? On Etsy you can find good models of various types of characters (so a tiefling rogue or an elf wizard for example) that are usually reasonably priced. The thing I like to do most is use an online designer like TitanCraft or HeroForge where you can buy the digital file of the model you've created, and then there are a few printers on Etsy who will print that figure for you. Obviously that would require actually designing the character online but those printers on Etsy might do vouchers so your son could design it himself?

Thank you! This is part of the reason I don’t want to spend loads as I may end up picking the wrong thing. I think I’ll get a general mixed pack and then give him some money to pick something himself after Christmas.

He is a DM I believe. He’s quite new to it but has got really into it.
That’s great, thank you - I think I’ll get one of those sets with the heroes/monsters as he is a total beginner with the painting and I don’t want him to get too frustrated if he goes wrong.

That’s a great idea re: Etsy, I will show him and he can have a look as he has also got birthday money to spend.

Thanks!

Sorry one other question I meant to ask… I wanted to get him a primer to chuck in his stocking… from what I understand it’s either black white or grey, and that’s down to personal preference. I’m leaning towards a spray grey one, but open to any suggestions! Thank you!

Personally I always use grey as a primer - Vallejo and Citadel are good brands and I've gotten Humbrol paints from Hobbycraft which have been decent as well.

Don't forget to grab a pack of brushes for miniatures, you can find sets on Amazon that will be more than good enough for trying it out as a hobby. My current set of mini brushes I actually got from TK Maxx for about a fiver so worth a look in their art section too 😁

lizardwizard · 15/12/2025 18:29

Also not sure if he already has them but the Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual would be great D&D gifts if he's just getting started!

OdeToAutumn · 17/12/2025 16:40

@lizardwizard thank you, that’s really helpful. I assumed his paints had brushes in there but I’ll order him some.
I went for grey, thanks

Off topic but if you want something similar, I got my dungeon master brother a make your own DnD dice kit off Etsy, probably the best received present I’ve ever given!

Cherryrainbow · 17/12/2025 21:12

My sons gotten into d&d. I bought him the hellfire stranger things set for his birthday.

Etsy have lots of fun dnd related stuff and from what I know of several dnd players, new dice or mystery dice bags are always appreciated lol.

Ohh just had a look and that does look exciting, I think he will love that. I’ve bought him enough now, but I’m going to show him as he may want to buy it himself after Christmas. Thank you

Just seen some liquid core dice as well, and they look really good. I’m not even into it and I want some 😆

I’m starting to realise there is no such thing as too many dice sets 😂

The thing he really wants, which I have got him already, is some dice chest that comes with a mystery set.

theres various brands and different creature types personally some of the non branded ones can be used as different creatures etc, as long as you know the different creatures he may use in the campaigns then thats the main thing @OdeToAutumn

RhaenysRocks · 21/12/2025 09:16

Oh if he stays into it you're covered for years of gifts. Especially as a DM. A deck of many things, loads of manuals and books, a dice throne, a dice dungeon, loads of v cool t-shirts online. If you don't mind Temu they do sets of things to build 3d maps with, walls and scenery etc.

OdeToAutumn · 28/12/2025 13:40

Thank you all, he was very happy with the figures and paintbrushes. I got him a dice chest which was the main thing he wanted, and I told him about the make your own dice, figures etc so he’s excited to look into that and use some money he got 😃

I know this is a bit late now, but I got my son (massively into dnd and warhammer) some nolzurs marvellous miniatures for Christmas and they were a huge hit. I found an eBay seller who had loads brand new so it was not expensive either.

thanks to the other posters for the extra tips for next year!
