What do you have for dinner on Christmas Eve? I’m looking for some inspiration of something easy but a bit special and also suitable for young children

Home cooked ham with cauliflower macaroni cheese

Baahbaahmutton · 16/12/2025 08:32

We do fish on Christmas Eve. Bouncing between various types since I am not a fan of traditional carp (not from uk). Fish and potato salad. This year we are looking at breaded or battered fish for a change.

We usually have a Chinese takeaway (I'm too busy prepping to cook dinner Xmas eve and kitchen is too busy). But this year, as we're going to family for Christmas instead of hosting, we're making sushi. Can keep it simple for the little ones if their fussy. Cucumber Maki is always a staple. I'll probably get some itzu easy bits to go with it.

We have a seafood platter with langoustines, lobster, smoked salmon honey roast salmon, seafood sauce, melted garlic butter, salad and frites. We only started doing this in the last few years and it’s so delicious and easy to throw together.

Yum I want to come to your house!

Nigella's bittersweet lemon and orange chicken (something like that, Ms Google will help) is a Christmas Eve winner in our house!

Manro · 16/12/2025 11:12

Buffet with all the posh Christmas cheeses.

MsSeuss · 16/12/2025 11:14

Cheeseboard, hot turkey rolls and hot spiced apple juice with rum.

We are going out for a late lunch so we can then get back and watch Xmas films in our pjs and eat chocolate with no need to cook. We have everyone at ours on Xmas day so that's enough cooking and Xmas day is also DH's birthday so it's a nice treat meal for him. He doesn't know I've prepped the restaurant in advance that it's his birthday meal

Chicken and mushroom filo pastry pie with asparagus and mashed potatoes. Pavlova for dessert.

namethisbird · 21/12/2025 21:13

We have a cheese and charcuterie board with lots of accompaniments served with a party food style buffet with lots of champagne.

Silverstarfishes · 21/12/2025 21:27

Takeaway Chinese or Thai but, beef wellington sounds amazing if I can encourage DH to do his!

gogomomo2 · 21/12/2025 21:31

catin8oot5 · 21/12/2025 22:12

I’m doing a puff pastry chicken pie and green veg. Maybe some mash for the kids if they fancy it

Rodneynotdave · 21/12/2025 22:19

Not sure when or how it happened but we always have gammon, egg, chips, peas and pineapple. It's become a tradition out of no where that my teens insist on!

Belmondo · 21/12/2025 22:20

I'm in the market for some sort of Scandi dinner - maybe smoked salmon or trout with some boiled baby potatoes and a TBD veg side dish.

SophiaSW1 · 21/12/2025 23:10

Always eat out. Too much to do on Christmas Eve to be bothering with cooking and clearing up.

KnickerlessParsons · 21/12/2025 23:10

We’re having a hearty soup and naice bread and butter
