Daughter’s Culinary Christmas List

Dd (6) asks Santa for specific Christmas dinner items every year. I mean out of the box stuff - spinach, pasta, meatballs…

She is well fed with homemade dinners every evening, made from fresh British produce with typically 3-4 fruits/vegetables, 3 days vegetarian, 3 days meat/fish, and then a (homemade) pie or a roast on Sundays. Minimal butter/oil (2-3 tbsp per meal). Lunches from school catering, so she’s getting fairly round meals too. She’ll eat everything. I guess my point is, she’s not starving or deprived of fresh, healthy foods. She’ll ask for specific meals now and again if we haven’t had it in a while (she loves mushrooms, for example).

She’s not asking Santa for cr@p. She’s laying out her ideal Christmas dinner. See attached photo. I’m just… 😐The cheek of it! I’m the one who cooks it! Not Santa! Nor does he order in the groceries! I’m not gonna say anything to her though… She’s still young, right?

Anyone else’s kid(s) do this? Or did they ever at some point? If so, when or how did it stop?

I’m confused too. Can t you just make her what she wants? I think it’s quite cute and funny

Ritaskitchen · 14/12/2025 16:51

I’d just ignore it and cook the Christmas dinner that I wa Ted

Idk what people on Mumsnet are supposed to talk about if not the actions of their children.

Well all sorts… there are sections for people who like to read, pet lovers, TV programmes etc. There are even non parents on here! Normally though people have some sort of point to their thread. They may want opinions, or support, or be asking for the answer to a specific question, or it may just be a cathartic rant. I just couldn’t really see what the issue was in your scenario!

Fuckoffeasypeelers · 14/12/2025 16:56

Adorable
Keep the notes
My DS reason for living was food, still is.
On his birthday he listed the food he wanted at his party 😁
If we went out -theme park he said the best bit was the picnic I packed.

Celebrate it and thank your lucky stars you don't have a fussy one!

Allseeingallknowing · 14/12/2025 17:01

I think OP’s daughter’s list is sweet and funny. Why are some making heavy weather of it ?m

blacksax · 14/12/2025 17:15

Floorclean · 14/12/2025 15:58

Is she an only child?

FFS.

That insulting old chestnut again.

OopOop · 14/12/2025 17:15

I think it’s sweet and funny too, and if the point was just to say ‘look at my daughter’s sweet and funny list’ then that’s great! It just seemed like the OP had some sort of issue with it and I couldn’t figure out what it was 🤷🏻‍♀️

GlitzAndGigglesx · 14/12/2025 17:17

Just a strange thread to give OP an ego boost about how healthy and unbuttery/oily they are

Growlybear83 · 14/12/2025 17:22

Surely it wouldn’t be too difficult to make some meatballs the day before and let your daughter have them for her xmas lunch with spinach? The other things she’s asked for would presumably part of a traditional xmas lunch anyway. I’m just shocked, and impressed, at the idea of a six year old willingly eating spinach 🤣🤣

Floorclean · 14/12/2025 17:37

GlitzAndGigglesx · 14/12/2025 17:17

Just a strange thread to give OP an ego boost about how healthy and unbuttery/oily they are

The op probably would benefit from staying a thread, but not about her daughter liking spinach!!

Boudy · 14/12/2025 17:47

Thankfully op meatballs and spinach does not sound too bad cooking wise. But I might be nervous about next year in case more complex! I think she sounds very sweet and love the addition of the Switch etc. Definitely keep the list!

Wishihadanalgorithm · 14/12/2025 17:47

I’m mainly convinced this is a stealth boast about how you’re such a wonderful parent who cooks amazing food. However, if this is real, then I’d be telling the child Christmas dinner is what the adults choose - maybe with some amendments for children. Then I’d get into the fact that so many kids and adults don’t have presents or nice dinners so perhaps your child should enjoy what she does have and maybe donate some of her old toys to families who would need them - via a charity obviously.

BobbieTables · 14/12/2025 17:54

Ah, this is a very cute list. I think having 2 or 3 special rituals that the kids like at Christmas is a nice idea, you just have to be careful not to overdo load yourself with work.
I suppose your call if you think this one tips you over the edge!!!

Whatwouldnanado · 14/12/2025 17:58

Right, so well done for having a little one who enjoys lots of different foods. I had four of them probably because we never had processed stuff in the house because my dh and I never developed a taste for it because we didn’t have it when we were kids (we are old with dads who grew veg and caught fish, and mums who home baked everything)
As for being allowed to pick her Christmas dinner ,good for you. Too much of a faff for me and surely sharing from big dishes of stuff is part of the fun of eating together. We do it every day.
Our kids suggest Christmas food and all enjoy chipping in with the cooking.

24Dogcuddler · 14/12/2025 18:12

Is she not telling FC what she will be/ wants to eat in a conversational way? Rather than adding it to her list?
I’d make her named favourite on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day as others have suggested. I’d be saying no room on the sleigh for foods he’d need a fridge!

RunItOff · 14/12/2025 18:18

The chicken bit at the end made me laugh… She is so specific describing a fully accomplished meal, and then adds chicken at the end. Chicken feels like an alternative to meatballs, so a completely different meal, like it should be one or another. But somehow it makes sense to her. And the “we will” - the confidence! I loved it, thank you for sharing, OP. It’s been a long time since my DD was that age and I miss those moments.

Sminty2 · 14/12/2025 18:28

Can you have her choices on Christmas Eve?

Say that is what Santa has before he starts traveling with her presents and that he eats a traditional meal on his return?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 14/12/2025 18:33

Floorclean · 14/12/2025 16:31

Op wanted to let us know her child was eating celery

Why would'nt you😂

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 14/12/2025 19:11

I’d just ignore the food request and tell her Father Christmas only deals in toys not food 🤷‍♀️

FancyFireplaces · 14/12/2025 19:17

Weirdest post ever.

Ecrire · 14/12/2025 19:25

Wow OP! What a brilliant 6 year old you have raised to ask for spinach for Christmas! And celery! Amazing! Also so well done on the well rounded homemade meals with only a bit of fat in them. Awesome!!!!!!!

GlitzAndGigglesx · 14/12/2025 19:34

Floorclean · 14/12/2025 17:37

The op probably would benefit from staying a thread, but not about her daughter liking spinach!!

And the other one eating celery. Don't forget the stolen celery by a KFC eating child! Quick someone call the social on a child eating KFC instead of celery and spinach

gogomomo2 · 14/12/2025 19:40

I’d make it on Christmas Eve myself,

Crunchymum · 14/12/2025 20:10

PinkTigerLily · 14/12/2025 16:20

Lmao I don’t resent her, let’s be clear about that. I’m worried she’ll be disappointed in Santa if she doesn’t get spinach for Christmas 😂

It's not going to ruin Christmas to tell her Santa doesn't cook the dinner and spinach and meatballs wont be on the menu.

Pandering to her is not doing her any favours.

And I don't want even want to mention the Switch.

Whichone2024 · 14/12/2025 21:28

OP for what it’s worth if my LO asked for that on Christmas I would totally do it. It’s cute and funny and in the grand scheme of things not a big ask and can be prepped ahead of time lol.
but there is the option of the stuffing balls being the meatballs lol. The spinach could actually be leaves in a salad if that makes it easier. Spinach dip as I mentioned earlier (goes good with tortilla chips, fish veg sticks , or as our family have at Christmas with the main meal!! It’s soooooo good! (You can find a recipe on BBC food) The meatballs my auntie does is in a really really yummy sauce - just google cocktail meatballs! (You might find you love them so much you do them every year) So many options really. But seriously these are two things that my family never do without in chrismtas now . ❤️
