What are you prepping/cooking for vegan guests over Christmas?

Need some inspiration as we have 3 vegan guests staying over Christmas. I’d love to prepare some lovely dishes ahead of time to stock up the freezer.

I think I’ll be fine for Christmas dinner but stuck for other meal ideas and snacks.

Please help!

Why aren’t the vegans helping with cooking while they are there? They can sort their own meals out

They will - and my daughter (one of the three) will also cook for everyone including meat for the carnivores. But we have a huge houseful of people for best part of a week, so I wanted to plan ahead a little and have at least a few nice things prepped ahead :)

Some more ideas that haven’t been mentioned:

  • soup + bread (you can make the soup feel v luxurious with a tin of coconut milk added in, I love doing roast butternut squash, tomato, & carrot; to make even nicer toast some seeds to go on top)
  • sushi rice, smashed cucumbers, kimchi, marinaded tofu, vegan dumplings, seaweed etc
  • BLT type sandwiches with fried slices of smoked tempeh instead of bacon (you can buy decent vegan mayo these days)
  • Chocolate mousse made by melting dark chocolate then blending with silken tofu, vanilla, and maple syrup (just pop into fridge to set)

Yes to luxurious soups!

@SwirlyGates Vegan puff pastry (just roll do one) might be your friend here! Both for savoury things - “cheese” and marmite pinwheels - and sweet like little tarts? You can easily make vegan frangipane which is delicious and feels very festive!

Edited

Thanks, though one guest is going to bring a puff pastry thing. Love a bit of marmite!

All those carrots you’ve been eating have clearly done sod all for your eyesight because I’m a different poster.

I only quoted you to contextualise my comment to the OP that there were loads of crisps that were indeed free of animal products.

You certainly have no manners. Perhaps I ought to have been eating more carrots.

You obviously think you are more knowledgable than a vegan so I will leave it to the experts.

sashh · 12/12/2025 15:31

Don't firget tins and pavkets OP rice coooked with coconut milk and various tinned beans and whatever spices/ herbsyou fancy.

You can make 'burgers' with tinned beans. Rule of thumb mash half the beans and stir in the rest whole. Form in to patties and cook.

Passata is also useful.

I have delightful manners. I just don’t care to use them when someone starts having a pop at me because they’ve made a mistake. I repeat, I am NOT the poster who said that nearly all crisps are fine. You have confused me with someone else.

Sounds amazing!! Can we come to yours? 😂

I spent Feb-Oct with morning sickness (HG) and finally food sounds good and I can eat again! We’re going all out!

Can I dive in here? I'm hosting a buffet and would appreciate any vegan ideas for simple snacks or finger food that are nice cold or room temperature (and look like I've made some effort lol).

  1. cut sweet potatoes into discs, roast and top with guacamole
  2. Buy ready made pastry (most own brands are vegan) and pesto from the free-from section to make pesto twists (or if making pesto replace Parmesan with nutritional yeast and cashews)
  3. garlic confit and bread
  4. “Grilled and marinated sandwich vegetables” from this article https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/jun/16/yotam-ottolenghi-picnic-recipes

After all the trouble they caused at Christmas 2023, the Vegan partner of a family member is not invited this year.
My late second cousin was a Vegetarian for over 40 years, but still cooked a turkey or goose for her family for decades. Never made a fuss.
Unfortunately those militant vegans & veggies of younger generations can't shut the feck up even for one bloody day ... 🤬

Maybe you'd be surprised at the number of meat-eaters who can't shut the feck up when I order a veggie meal in a restaurant, or have a vegan lunch at work. I never have a go at them, but they take it on themselves to look at what I'm eating and criticise my diet.

SwirlyGates · 14/12/2025 17:21

@FunnyOrca thank you!

Thelnebriati · 14/12/2025 17:25

My easy never fail recipe is chestnut pie. Fill a (vegan) shortcrust pie base with sauteed minced red onion and celery, fried chestnut mushrooms with garlic, and a thick layer of cut up roast chestnuts or chestnut puree. Top with flaky or puff pastry and bake till the pastry is done. You can also use it as a vegetable side.

I've never encountered this in the workplace. No one says anything if other people's food looks even slightly veggie or vegan.

We did however have that vegan who made the newspaper a while back when she threw out 40+ stuff lunches from the staff fridges. She was sacked on the spot and arrested after being detained by security.
One of the owners bought everyone miss their food a takeaway, to make amends for that crazy person's bizarre actions.
I've mentioned this incident on here before & from my experience it's always the bloody non meat eaters causing the problems.

I could also mention what they did to certain loudmouth vegetarians at some schools back in the day ... but best not as I don't want to upset anyone at the moment.

Complain to HR if it is an issue or eat out of sight of people. I was on a restricted diet when I had my gallbladder removed & ate in the conference room for two months to avoid questions on my change of eating habits.

I'm not eating my salad out of sight of people just so that the fat guy munching fries and a burger doesn't comment on my "unhealthy" diet!

Anyway, enough derailing. Always happens on vegen threads.

Just roll puff pastry is vegan so add some vegan sausages and some vegan gravy (granules available in supermarkets!) - then serve a tasty toad in the hole vegan style along with some veggies or choice, we just do carrots! Works great as you can cook up a meat version at the same time on a different tray in the oven. Use the same gravy for. It’s if you want as the vegan gravy is basically onion gravy and is yummy!

HelloVeritas · 17/12/2025 19:12

I LOVE that Jusroll is vegan. Never considered Toad In The Hole 😍

I do love the vegan whipped creams/ plants creams whatever they are. Pizza, sausage rolls. ( love the plant meats too, prefer things like mushroom wellingtons though). Bloody love pastry too. Roasted parsnips, carrots, pots are good too, Chuck them in the air fryer with olive oil and salt, garlic oil /garlic salt.
Richmonds sausages/bacon are the best in my opinion!

For Xmas dinner we’re doing a butternut squash and mushroom wreath, and a beetroot and red onion tarte tatin as mains. Desserts are gingerbread cheesecake, a raspberry trifle and a vegan Xmas pudding, all homemade.

Other meals we’ll be serving on other days as we have family visiting for 10 days are curries like chickpea and spinach, mushroom and potato, cauliflower and spinach. Also a tofu and bean chilli and a mushroom lasagne, tacos, pizza.

We’ll have party/buffet food on a couple of evenings, some of which I’ll make and some I’ll buy.

Snacks will be crisps and veg with different dips like red pepper and walnuts, salsa, cashew and celery, guacamole. Selection of nuts. Vegan chocolates, cookies, cake, mince pies, fudge (all homemade), vegan cheese with crackers. Air fried garlic and herb chickpeas. Lots of fruit.

I’m late to this thread but this sounds amazing, do you have recipes for the wreath, tarte tatin, and cheesecake?
