Because the weather has been so awful this weekend that any attempt to get a real one has been aborted!… I don’t want to pick a tree in the rain, nor do I want a wet tree in the house.

I’ve dug the fake one out that we’ve had for 20yr but not used for the past 10. It looks great!

We have only ever had a fake tree, both of our parents always had fake trees so it's just normal for us. We have had current one for 15, maybe 20 years, mil had it before that.

We have always had a fake one. don’t take the risk with four cats! Only annoying thing is I have to build it branch by branch. 😂

I had no idea real trees were that much as I've never had one. I love my artificial tree and that it's the same tree every year is part of the magic for me ❤️ I've never been tempted to get a real one for all the reasons mentioned in the thread.

Team real. Having a chunk of plastic in the corner of your room just isn't the same as a lovely smelling actual tree.

I live in Surrey, possibly the most expensive part of the country! Nurseries and tree farms are around £30 for a 6-7ft spruce. Garden centre chains are much more expensive. I don't buy Nordmans, though as I don't like the shape (too squat, not bushy), and they don't have the same smell as the spruces.

Edited

Ah, the type of tree is of course a factor. But it seems impossible to get anything other than a Nordman, here. I've certainly not seen any spruces at the places I normally buy from.

To be honest, the smell was quite faint in ours maybe as rhe room is large, if certainly wasn’t notable, and I do get what you say by a lump of plastic as technically that’s what it is, but it looks far from that. We have this one, in the 9ft, and it’s got so many lights on it, and genuinely looks lovely a ll decorated. I’d not consider going back and would buy another if something went wrong with this one, in a cost per year it’s still currently more expensive that a real one, but will hopefully even itself out.

We get real every year. We go to a farm where they are all in stands in a big barn to choose from, so you can check for wonkiness etc. It smells amazing and it's a lovely thing we do each year.

We had a fake one for the kitchen but it hurt my hands putting the branch hooks in each year then we put it outside during covid and it went rusty!

So it's 7ft for £70 every year for us.

It stays alive for ages. Quite often the needles are still on it in April in the garden!

The smell of real trees makes me feel ill. The smell of pine reminds me of the old toilet cleaner we used to have years ago. We are on our fourth artificial tree and have been married almost 45 years, so on average, each one has lasted over ten years - definitely cheaper than buying a real one every year.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 08/12/2025 17:44

We've had fake trees for as long as I can remember. Our current one is at least 15 years old and exactly the right size for the space.

Come to think of it, I need to go and get it out of the loft and put it up. We were busy over the weekend otherwise we'd have done it already.

Fetching the real tree was a big family tradition. Going to choose the tree then coming home with the DC in the back and branches in their ears.
I kept it up for years even while they were at uni because whenever I suggested a fake tree you would think I was cancelling Christmas.
I was always slightly uneasy about the fire risk in a house with a stove, in fact after Christmas I used to cut the branches up and they made great firelighters 😬

Eventually I bought a very decent fake in 2020 and I put it up today.
