“Nice” thermal underwear - does it even exist?

DB has announced that he and his partner want “nice thermal underwear” for Christmas. Is this even a thing that exists? I can only picture greying longjohns and vests. Any tips on where to buy such a thing would be wonderful.

Uniqlo heattech, especially new cashmere ones.

Marks and Spencer heatgen range is unreal. There is an extra warm version - but I love the ordinary ones - super fine for layering but still so warm

Bitzee · 07/12/2025 16:43

By nice do they mean like merino or silk rather than synthetic fabrics? IDK about men but JL do some silk stuff for women. Smartwool is good for merino (both sexes). And places like Lululemon also potentially worth a look. Uniqlo have the new heat tech cashmere blend which I haven’t tried but look good.

Uniqlo

Catabogus · 07/12/2025 16:54

Thanks! Uniqlo looks good. Do their sizes come up as expected or do they run small?

(I hope they don’t mean silk or cashmere! As my budget doesn’t quite stretch that far)

I’ve got on well with the M&S heatgen range, but it’s fairly standard stuff which may or may not meet your brief.

I like the normal and the medium weight and sometimes wear the medium just as a top with nothing else over it. The normal leggings are great for general wear, not too bulky, not too hot, but warm enough when you are generally out and about.

Cebello · 07/12/2025 16:58

I’ve just bought one of the cashmere heat tech tops and it’s so warm. It’s only 9% cashmere so the price is affordable. I wish I’d bought more now.

Catabogus · 07/12/2025 18:29

Yes, the cashmere heat-tech tops look good! Anyone know about sizing? For some reason I suspect it may come up small, but I’ve never ordered from there before.

Yes! I’ve just got a top and about to buy two more in different colours. So soft, not bulky, wash well and really warm!!

Pretty true to size in my experience. I’m a 10-12 on top and got the 10 as I wanted to layer it and it fits perfectly.

Bella Di Notte does some very nice women’s merino underwear - very soft and thin.

stillavid · 07/12/2025 19:17

I don't do Uniqlo heat tech as don't like the plastic nature of it. Personally I like a merino silk mix from companies like Bella Di Notte.

stillavid · 07/12/2025 19:18

Cross post with previous poster!

The uniqlo heat tech does not come up small - true to size. The 9% cashmere ones are beautifully light and warm, my best purchase this winter. Other stuff from their heat tech range also very good - socks are super warm.

M&S heat tech also very good and long lasting.

I speak from Scottish winter experience :-)

HalloweenVibe · 07/12/2025 19:29

Uniqlo is true to size. If you are thinking it’s small, they might have been vinted stock from Asia. I also buy uniqlo there and the sizing is different and very small. For example, DD 14 bought a skirt in S and she is a size 6. Large would only be a 10-12 at most. They won’t sell in Europe so they don’t follow the same Japanese sizing.

dotdotdotdash · 07/12/2025 19:49

If you want merino or merino and silk, Dilling is really good

POTC · 07/12/2025 19:51

I have some 'nice' ones from Sainsbury's!

Moonlightfrog · 07/12/2025 21:03

I wear OEX thermals from go outdoors, they cost a bit but are the best thermals I have found. I am outdoors a lot and they keep me toasty.

Thetrickcyclist · 07/12/2025 23:34

Another vote for Dilling, for merino/merino & silk thermals at a reasonable price, they also seem transparent about their supply chain and whether the merino is sourced without mulesing
