Christmas Eve menu suggestions

Am hoping that everyone will share what they will be eating on Christmas Eve in the hopes of finding some inspiration. I have seven people to feed - including a couple of fussy oldies - and haven't got a clue what I should dish up!

We do “platter” which can easily accommodate fussy oldies and interested foodies alike.

Basically a nice assortment of mainly cold items laid out on the table for people to help themselves. Some years, we do some M&S party nibbles to add some hot stuff to it. And while I am putting a lot in my suggestions, it’s about putting a nice mix of meat bites, salad bits, sauce/dippy bits, some bread/crackers, and cheese, for people to help themselves as they would like - we never have all of these in a single year.

Things like a basic plainer salad - sliced cooked ham, other more traditional cooked meats, bowl of lettuce, bowls of cherry tomatoes/carrot sticks/pepper sticks/olives/sliced avocados etc
Some more exotic cooked meats like salami, Parma ham, braseola.

Some seafood element - smoked salmon, cooked prawns, crab toes.

sauce/dippy bits- hummus, salsa, guacamole, seafood sauce for prawns, ketchup/mayo/bbq if needed for fussy eaters…
crackers, crusty french stick slices, breadsticks etc
And we usually open the Christmas cheeseboard of 3-5 cheeses as well. At least 1 soft (Brie, Camembert etc), 1-2 hard (cheddar, compte, Gouda, sheep’s cheeses etc) and a blue, sometimes with a cream cheese if mild is needed or stronger vintage ones …depending on the group.

And for those who need more hearty - add a bowl each of coleslaw and potatoe salad, or some couscous with roasted veggies etc.

We go out for food or order in. Usually something we won't be having over the next few days, so Indian or Chinese type food.

We are doing a buffet this xmas eve, cheeses, pickles, chutneys, crackers, oatcakes and different hams, olives, stuffed peppers and salad type foods with sausage rolls and a cooked ham and a sweet board with xmas cake, mince pies and chocolates. My absolute favourite is the cheese, pickle and pineapple sticks which are a must for the buffet. I usually put it out about 3 ish and we pick as we want to and later on we can have soup with a ham sandwich which is usually about 9pm ish or just whenever we want. Buffet leftovers are meshed with xmas day leftovers for boxing day which works for us.

Last year we did the main meal on xmas eve and a huge buffet xmas day and both worked equally well.

Takeaway, definitely!

But if you’ve fussy ones, then the idea of a buffet type spread is good and you can add whatever isn’t eaten to your Christmas Day supper.

Ham is a good option, too, I suppose, as that’s easily added to the Christmas Day supper buffet.

Whoever said roast chicken or turkey ⬆️, why???? Do you not do roast on the day itself?

HangryBrickShark · 05/12/2025 11:44

Takeaway or like someone suggested a kebab, if I can find a non halal one. Its one of my favourite things kebab.

This year I'm on Wegovy so struggle to eat much/rich food

Buffet it is - I think it would be perfect! I love all the different ways you do things though and you've given me some ideas for things I wouldn't have tried. Keep sharing though - New Years eve needs a nice spread too :)
