Gifts for sport mad males

Just that really. Got a lovely lovely brother in his mid 20s to buy for whose main hobby are various sports. He's sent a few sport-specific ideas over but they total about £10 and was looking to spend around £40. He's very modest in his requests but is comfortable off to buy top quality equipment /clothes so he often just buys this as and when he needs.

What are you buying the sports enthusiast in your life?

Sports fans are generally hard to buy for unless they are fans of any specific team. Does he actively like any teams or athlets? If so you can get him something related to them, like clothing items from official stores or a book on an athlete's biography, etc. Some teams release calendars for the upcoming year, though it could be too late to get one now, but you can make a calendar like this yourself (here is a guide if you need one).

If this isn't an option, I'd suggest either getting him a gift card of the store he buys something for his hobbies from or just asking him directly. It takes away the element of surprise but you don't want to get him something he won't use, so asking is a safe option.

Training top

socks - may sound boring but some sport-specific socks can be quite pricey.

Running or cycling gloves

I was also going to suggest a book. I've bought my DS the autobiography of one of his favourite athletes this year.
Without knowing which sports he is into it is it's difficult to make other suggestions, but if it's something he does over the Winter how about a decent pair of gloves, thermal socks or a hat?
Water bottles are always useful too, whether it's something like cycling where you need to carry water or a teamsport where you might keep water on the sidelines.
Not very exciting, but always useful is cleaning equipment, if he has a kit that needs cleaning after use. Or something for helping to dry shoes. I have some "shoe bananas" but I believe you can get electric gadgets too. If he uses energy gels, protein powder or any other kind of dietary supplement they'd probably be welcome but make sure you get his preferred brand as some don't suit everyone.

just buy him more than one of the £10 items!

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 04/12/2025 11:31

What has he asked for? Maybe we can help find something to go alongside

KerfuffleShuffle · 04/12/2025 21:40

Thanks all, his sports hobbies are varied - racket sports, rugby, winter sports, water sports, golf etc. Apart from England Rugby team, there's no real team or sportsperson he follows. Books would be out of the question but I think I might get him a nice training top/crew socks alongside the few accessories he asked for. Just a bit boring really but I realise his interests are not mine 😂

If football is one of the sports he likes, then you could get him a mystery shirt. Quite a few companies do them if you Google. I use www.mysterykits.co.uk. Basically a surprise football top that comes in a sealed gift box, so you don't know the shirt until you open it. You can stipulate a few things when you order e.g I always ask for a non UK team and no red shirts, as my sports mad son would hate a rival premier league team's shirt and the team he supports wears red so he has loads in that colour already. It manages to combine a practical gift with something quite silly and fun at the same time. You could get something cool like Barcelona but usually you might get a random African team or something. They are about £40.

If he does any kind of outdoor sport in winter I can safely say that he can never have too many pairs of gloves (but you will need to know his hand measurements): they wear out, get abraded, get lost etc. Get technical gloves for his sport if the budget permits (£40 doesn't go far if you're buying cycling gloves but would be plenty for some sports) or a good pair of liner gloves if it doesn't.

I wouldn't ordinarily suggest buying technical clothes unless you know what you're doing, but unless you choose the wrong sport it's very difficult to go badly wrong with gloves. We have such variable weather that whatever you get will be useful at some point and gloves wear out faster than just about anything else. Between us my partner and I probably have about 15 to 20 pairs that are still useful.
