Food hamper to Canada?

Hello
My son lives with his family in Calgary. Usually we send a hamper from a dedicated company. However it looks like the company are not doing it anymore. I want to send them cadburys chocolate bars and multi packets of crisps - they can’t get these and he misses them 😂 looking it up it seems to suggest I can send food items as long as they are in their original packaging - I’m just a bit jittery because Canada seems to have a lot of rules and regulations - has anybody sent this type of food to Canada? Thank you so much.

Use Amazon Canada and buy directly from them - it’ll be cheaper on postage, or find a Canadian company that does British hampers.

Not used any of these companies- just done a quick search.

My son is at university in Canada and posting anything seems to be a nightmare. Plus I think there's been strikes recently. I'd only buy and send within Canada at the moment!

NoLongerATeacher · 01/12/2025 18:49

Thank you - the strike is over and things are getting through - Amazon Canada can’t get cadburys - or they can but they are unavailable.
I’ve looked at the other hamper providers but it’s specifically cadburys and monster munch crisps I need to send 😂😂
can I send them myself?

I sent two sets of children’s pyjamas and two bags of revels to Canada last week. It cost me £28.

I wouldn’t be posting a hamper.

You’d be better off buying the stuff from British shops over there like this

Thank you - on looking though most of the crisps are out of stock! No monster munch 😂 I will keep this link though for the future.

I’ve made a big box up of Cadburys and crisps and will send it off and see what happens!

Nationwide rotating Canada Post slowdowns continue but should not affect your package too badly (not mailing anything alive, right?)

I've never had a problem with importing crisps, chocolate (snack foods) etc to Canada by mail.

Your son is lucky to have such a caring mum!

Here, if this helps:
"You cannot mail most fresh, perishable foods, including fresh meat, fish, and produce like fruit and vegetables, into Canada.
Also restricted or prohibited are alcoholic beverages and certain other food products, such as products containing meat, and some dairy items. It's crucial to check the specific restrictions and consider that even some non-perishable processed foods (typically those containing meat products) have rules."

StruggleFlourish · 01/12/2025 22:39

"To mail a food hamper from the UK to Canada, you must restrict contents to non-perishable, sealed, and shelf-stable items like biscuits, sweets, and chocolate.

Fresh, cured, or dried meats are prohibited in mail, and all food must be declared, with potential for inspection and delays by Canadian authorities like the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

It's crucial to be aware that goods exceeding a low value threshold of CAN$20 for gifts will incur duties and taxes, possibly creating an unexpected cost for the recipient.

Delivery times vary by service, but standard air mail services are typically 5–10 working days, plus time for customs. "

Hope this helps. I do a ton of international shipping and have a lot of experience with North American mailing regulations, but I wanted to double check before posting cuz I didn't want to give incorrect advice as i don't very often mail food items.

Thank you so much for this little nugget of information!

There are strict rules re food stuffs enter the territory

blobby10 · 02/12/2025 09:21

@NoLongerATeacher however you send the parcel you will have to fill out a detailed invoice and they will pay duty/import tax/whatever on it. I fell foul of this when sending my brother some chocolates and a pair of shoes he had left behind after a visit - I had to list every single packet of chocolate hobnobs and grab bag of cadbury's caramel buttons. He refused to pay duty on his ten year old shoes so went without them until he next visited. HOWEVER it would be worth checking as it may have been because I used our company DHL account.............!!
