What time do you sit down to eat Christmas dinner?

Just a quick lighthearted question! I want to serve around 5pm so it’s not such a rush in the morning to get everything done for midday. My mum always did this as it felt more Christmassy in the evening with all the candles, lights and fire on etc. What time do you usually aim for?

Around 1pm. I don't eat a meal later just pudding and mince pies.

I'd hate my Christmas dinner in the evening! I'd be filling up on crap all day just to keep going.

HappyAsASandboy · 02/12/2025 20:22

I set the timings of visitors etc around dinner at 1pm. They’re always late, so I actually aim for serving at 2pm, and I always take longer to cook than expected so end up serving at 3pm Grin

SliceofTosst · 02/12/2025 20:42

1-2pm. Then for then the evening eat cheeses, pates and party food and relax 😋

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/12/2025 20:54

Definitely after dark , candles on the table are a Must Have (LED for safety ) . Not too late as I've be up all night with heartburn.
Probably start around 3pm, I'll have spent the morning idling my way through cooking in the morning .

When the DC were little it was After Dark But Finish Before Dr Who

Depending on who wants what for breakfast ( selection box for DS and he'll be all po-faced as the gym isn't open) , scrambled eggs on toast for DH . Maybe toast and coffee for DD and me .

Big breakfast for Boxing Day .

BeenChangedForGood · 02/12/2025 20:54

We usually eat our main meal around 5ish ☺️ Just me, DH and DS so we’re fairly relaxed about timings.

Usually we have breakfast - just whatever everyone wants…DS and I usually have croissants and fruit, DH usually wants bacon rolls.

My parents and DHs parents usually pop in at some point during the day so I make soup the day before and then have it in the slow cooker on Xmas day and have some nice breads in and anyone that wants something over lunch can grab some soup/meats & cheeses/mince pies if they want it. Some do, some don’t. Leftover soup gets portioned in the freezer 👍🏻
I always save myself for dinner and chocolate so never have the soup 🤣

The full turkey dinner around 5ish when it’s back to just the 3 of us.

If we're hosting, we eat at 2pm with cheese and biscuits for supper. We've honed down dinner and cut out a lot of the trimmings: for example, no red cabbage, no Yorkshires but gallons of bread sauce and many pigs in blankets.

Macinae · 02/12/2025 21:17

2pm. We don't eat beforehand, but there's lots of drink flowing so we're ready for our dinner then! Always too full for dessert so we have that around 6pm while watching something festive. We like the cooking and dishes being done so the evening is free for relaxing.

HansHolbein · 02/12/2025 21:21

Aiming for 1500ish. We’ll have a good breakfast and there will be snacks out during the day. Cheese etc for supper.

woowooz · 02/12/2025 21:35

We eat around 7 pm . Table looks lovely with candles etc. We have nibbles when we are opening presents around midday . Light breakfast eg croissants.

Joeninety · 02/12/2025 21:38

It varies. When I get the shout of "get up, dinner's ready". Like most I suppose ?

Pistolpunk · 02/12/2025 21:38

We will be having a 3 course meal this year so starter will be between 1 and 1.30 main about 4 ish and pudding when we feel like it and picky bits around 11 pm ish or when we feel like it as there is something nice when it's dark and the twinkling lights when having the main course.

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/12/2025 21:39

7 ish if family with us.
take away curry around 8 this year because they’re not.

WWomble · 02/12/2025 21:49

Really surprised by the variety of answers! We’ve always had lunch, no starter turkey for half one, watch the Queen (tradition, I know it’s now the King), then pud. Picky bits, turkey sammidges for supper when you’re ready.

GivingUpFinally · 02/12/2025 21:51

We eat the main meal at around 8pm. Dessert at 9.30/10pm. Breakfast is always buttermilk pancakes and bacon. Lunch is the cheese and starters. Loads of chocolate and crisps available throughout the day.

Pallisers · 02/12/2025 21:53

All adults in our house. We open presents/stockings around 10 or so and then we have sausages/bacon/eggs and coffee. Might go for a walk around lunchtime. Dinner is at 5 which is a lot earlier than our usual dinner.

SailingYachty · 02/12/2025 21:56

1pm, it’s only always been Christmas lunch! If we had it at 5pm we’d need to have lunch anyway, I’d much rather have the big meal at lunchtime and just picky bits for dinner.

lavendarwillow · 02/12/2025 21:58

5pm usually as it gives me more time to actually cook and prepare and that’s around the time, the children usually have dinner anyway. Will do a starter (maybe Camembert) around 4ish and snacks throughout the day.

bert3400 · 02/12/2025 22:01

We have Brunch about 11ish, full on fry up breakfast, with everything including pancakes, berries, smoked salmon. Then we go out for a walk normally via the pub then get back about 2pm. Open presents and start dinner... eating about 5/6pm then games/TV in the evening. We have 10 for Christmas and everyone is staying, can't wait

TheOpalReader · 02/12/2025 22:04

1-2ish we don't have a turkey so don't have to cook a huge bird for half the day. We snack on Christmas chocs in the morning if we fancy. Then have pudding and other miscellaneous Christmas bits after 5ish.

mamaduckbone · 02/12/2025 22:22

Probably around 2-3pm. It used to be earlier when the dc were little and up at the crack of dawn, but now we'll have breakfast a bit later (only a small one though)
We stretch it out - pudding at 4ish and cheeseboard at 6 or 7.
My parents used to have Christmas dinner at 1 and a full party tea at about 6! But then I suppose our Christmas dinner in those days was literally just a Sunday roast - no fancy stuffings and extras.

RowOfRunners · 02/12/2025 22:31

After the King’s speech.

gogomomo2 · 02/12/2025 22:32

2ish, means we’ve eaten and cleared away before dark (and mum is refilling the table by 6pm anyway!)

MsSmartShoes · 02/12/2025 22:33

5ish here too.
Pastries for breakfast.
Smoked Salmon pate for lunch.
Xmas pudding served at 8pm ish.

ScarletWitchM · 02/12/2025 22:36

Dinner around 6pm, big brunch around 11am & lots of picking at snacks etc in between

ChevyCamaro · 02/12/2025 22:45

3.30, after the Kings speech. Cheeseboard, port and cold cuts around 9pm. Always have a long walk in the morning and maybe pop into the pub. I can’t be doing with being indoors all day when it’s dark so early.
