Do you put your Christmas presents under the tree once they are wrapped?

This was always the tradition in my house growing up, presents were placed under the tree until Christmas Day.

Dh said you shouldn’t because if the house got broken into, they’d know where to find the presents.

I can’t get that thought out of my head now.

Do you?

In my all adult household presents go under the tree just before bedtime on Christmas Eve.

Doesn't having presents under the tree early ruin the surprise? You can then tell how many/what size presents each got and may be able to guess them?

Father Christmas brings all presents on Christmas Eve. He leaves his presents in daughter's bedroom and puts presents from family and friends under the tree. Family and friends send their presents to Father Christmas to look after and then deliver.

When dc was little all presents were from Santa and they went out on Christmas Eve. Presents to family were and still are put under the tree when wrapped. I'm now also doing that with dc as they are 25 and 20.

Nope all presents go under the tree on Christmas Eve. Even the ones that aren't from Santa and even though the youngest is 15. Partially because of the burglar aspect, partially because the dog can't be trusted not to unwrap any that have food in them and partially because it's a left over tradition from when the kids were little.

Yup, we have pets so they go under the tree Christmas Eve and DDog goes in her bed in the kitchen. The cats are above any mischief, of course!

Wow you're brave to leave them in her room - must be a tough job sneaking into her room on Christmas Eve undetected.

I don't have young children any more, but I fell into this trap. DD, the first year she was properly aware asked me, "Why does Nanny, Grandma, Grandad, Aunty, Uncle etc buy us presents, but you and Daddy don't? (because we'd labelled it all from Santa).

Smart! It obviously never occurred to me to ask this 😂

JaninaDuszejko · 01/12/2025 05:43

Tree doesn't go up until weekend before Christmas but presents are then gradually put under it as they are wrapped. Not any more worried about burglars than any other time of the year and I'm sure they are more interested in wallets, phones and car keys than the piles of random presents under the tree.

There are decorations put up on Christmas Eve which adds to the magic on Christmas Day. FC only brings stockings, we never got the kids to write letters to him and were always fairly low key about the magic and myth building around FC, they got plenty of that at nursery and school.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 01/12/2025 05:52

Father Christmas obviously delivered DDs presents when they were little but everything else goes under the tree. We do have to think about food presents with the dog though. They aren't obviously on display from the window, but thieves would know that almost everyone has presents around at this time of year, surely?

alecks · 01/12/2025 05:57

Not when the kids were young because it ruined the ‘Santa/surprise’ element by having them around prior. I do now, but there are e far more valuable things in my living room for burglars than the presents, losing them would be very least of my worries.

We once not only snuck presents in, but assembled a wendy house in DD1's room.when she was three and fast asleep, at midnight on Christmas Eve.

In the morning she ran straight into our room excitedly and completely missed the pillowcase or two of presents and the wendy house. We took her back in and she said excitedly "Oh! A barn!" 😂

Zanatdy · 01/12/2025 06:09

Yes, since kids grown up I put the presents under the tree.

Growlybear83 · 01/12/2025 06:23

I don’t normally buy most presents until a few days before Christmas so by the time I wrap them it’s usually about the 23rd or 24th anyway, and then I put them straight under the tree.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 01/12/2025 06:26

We have a puppy so… no 😂. I do remember being terrified we’d get burgled every Christmas Eve as a child though 🙁.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 01/12/2025 06:33

justasking111 · 30/11/2025 21:59

No because at night the Labrador chews them. Ditto any low hanging baubles 😞

Last year, I wrapped all the presents on Christmas Eve and shut them away in our gym room as it wouldn’t be used on Christmas Eve. You have to give the door a tug to make sure it’s “clicked” shut properly and I mustn’t have. Our previous lab, who died in horrific circumstances in June, broke into the room and opened all of his presents which were right between DH and DS’s, even the none food ones. I only realised when I heard him squeaking a new toy upstairs 😂.

Yes, I did run to the shop for more wrapping paper to rewrap them as he loved opening presents and, given the circumstances, it will remain a treasured memory of him 💔. I was very impressed that he managed to only unwrap his own presents!

Sneezo · 01/12/2025 06:36

With a puppy in the house, no. I’d like to though- maybe not as soon as they are wrapped but fairly soon as I think they look lovely.

Sartre · 01/12/2025 06:54

Nope, my youngest DC would open them!

AhBiscuits · 01/12/2025 06:59

Any presents we get given go under the tree but any presents we buy are from santa so obviously they don't.

EleanorReally · 01/12/2025 07:02

not with dogs in the house
we bring them down on christmas eve

WonderingWanda · 01/12/2025 07:04

We all have so much expensive tech in our houses these days thay I doubt the burglars are going to be fussed with grannies slippers that are under the tree. They'll go straight for the lap tops, ipads, phones, car keys etc that are usually lying around the house.

whatisforteamum · 01/12/2025 07:09

No Christmas Eve as I've got cats who would unwrap them.🤣

Missey85 · 01/12/2025 07:09

My mum always put them out on Xmas Eve 😊 because that's when Santa comes 💕

Dutchhouse14 · 01/12/2025 09:20

As a child my mum put all the presents under the tree after we went to bed in Xmas eve so waking up Xmas morning was magical, also had christmas stocking from father Christmas left at end of our bed.
DH always had presents gradually added under tree as they were wrapped ,I resisted but lack of space and his persistence made me go with his plan so presents under tree as wrapped.
But still do stocking at end of bed (my way) rather than downstairs (his way) although tbh when DC were small and excitable and didnt sleep xmas eve this was hard work!!!

Not in our house. It builds the excitement if anything, as the pile grows! The kids don’t really touch them and they’re all intermingled so they don’t know whose is whose. They get their Santa sacks on Xmas eve too so they have a good mix of excitement on the day and the excitement build up.
