Walking socks for DH?

Can anyone suggest some good walking socks for under his walking boots? But not those Nordic ones as they can’t be washed over 30’ and can’t be tumbled.

Any decent walking sock will have a high wool content so you are going to face the washing issues one way or another. Bridgedale do great ones with high Merino wool content and constructed to support/pad the foot. I wash everything at 40 anyway (wool is naturally antibacterial doesn't need a hot wash), and just hang them on the radiator to dry. Get him more pairs so he has more to wear while the others are drying!

my best walking socks are wool, just have to do a wool wash, buy two pairs is my suggestion

Mine are Bridgedale and have been for years. I don’t wash them in a woollens wash - they just go in my normal darks wash and then on the line or on the maiden. They have different thicknesses and lengths e.g winter, summer, hiking, trail running etc so maybe a few pairs? They aren’t cheap but last for years - I still have pairs I took to Nepal a decade ago and have used regularly since.

I won’t be doing a wool wash for socks! Thanks, I’ll look at Bridgedale.

If you have a Morrisons nearby they have some called Bramble-walking socks. I’ve been getting them for a few years & they are lovely, wash well in a normal wash & tumble. I walk & hike a lot with my spaniel & they’re my go to ones now.

You want Falke socks. TK (trek) model. Just avoid the wool ones (clearly labelled on the socks themselves)

He can wash them himself, you don't have to do it! Alternatively you can put them in your regular wash and just use wool detergent, it will still clean your other clothes.

I like Smartwool socks for hiking. If you get polyester they'll be stinky, if you get cotton they'll be cold.

Always Bridgedale for OH and I.

Both DP and I always use Bridgedale. They last years and are super comfy!

I wear Smartwool, and I’ve never put them in a special wash. They go in at 30 or 40, and I dry them outside or on a clothes horse. They’ve lasted me years.

Walking socks are quite personal. People have different likes and dislikes so it's best he chooses. They also need to be the right thickness or else his walking boots won't fit right.

If they don't go in the normal wash, he deals with them, but I just fill up a 'wool' wash with non wool items to make it worth putting the load on.

EleanorReally · 30/11/2025 08:07

i wash them with the wool jumpers

EyeLevelStick · 30/11/2025 08:14

I wash my Bridgedales in the normal cycle (30C, never over 40) but dry them on the line/airer. I’ve had them years and wear them often.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/11/2025 08:19

the wool wash on our machine is quite short and there’s lots of other things that can go in it - anything which also needs a non biological detergent. If you really don’t want to do that then I guess he can hand wash them - it doesn’t take long to wash out a pair of socks, roll them in a towel to remove most of the moisture and hand them somewhere to dry.
For goodness sakes don’t tumble walking socks, they’ll end up horribly felted and useless. They’re really not a problem to dry.
