What food to serve at a gathering

We’re hosting 8 couples (10 including us). We rotate for dinner parties - last time we had brushchetta followed by lasagna with salad and lemon cheesecake, the previous time a Sunday roast. It’s our turn to host for the first time but we don’t have space to sit everyone around a dining table like we have when other couples hosted. Realistically people will need to spread between the kitchen and living room and eat on the sofa.

I don’t want to just put nibbles out (which seems a bit low effort) and would like to do something equivalent to the lovely dinners our friends have served. Even more so because it will be our Christmas get together. However no one wants to try and eat a Sunday roast on their knee on a sofa!

What would you serve in this scenario?

Thanks in advance!

Agree with others that it should be bowl food.

I’d do a chilli with various accompaniments that people can pick from - rice, tortilla chips, crusty bread, potato wedges, sour cream, guacamole etc.

Or curry - rice, poppadoms, naan, maybe some pakora?

Insomniatica · 28/11/2025 14:11

I’d make it more of a party in this situation - a buffet side table with canapés and a range of cocktails or mocktails

Then I’d bring out some hot buffet food but not too much

And last a really great “dessert trolley” with cheese and biscuits and fruit too

For the canapés and buffet I might make it Asian themed - Vietnamese spring rolls ; mango and chicken glass noodle salad; larb in Chinese lettuce wraps; duck in plum sauce; Thai fish cakes; pickled vegetables and chicken satay skewers and so on.

Yum.

Chilli/cottage pie/beige buffet... our go to for meals when we have too many to fit at the table.

gingerbreadmumm · 28/11/2025 14:35

Tagine, rice/cous cous etc . The spices used are all very Christmassy x

Lifejigsaw · 28/11/2025 15:05

What about something like raclette?

mrssunshinexxx · 28/11/2025 15:17

Chilli on jacket potatoes x

Buffet with a gammon, salad, bread, olives ,potato salad.

I agree with @Jiski

I'd do sandwiches or baghettes with turkey or pork with stuffing. I'd do sides of roast potatoes with a gravy mayo for dipping and some warm pigs in blankets. You could do some pimped up coleslaw to go with it as well.

Eggbert12345 · 28/11/2025 18:02

I would do a mini hog roast idea. Plain pork joint and a spicy pulled pork, slow cooked in advance and shredded. Served with nice baps, coleslaw, stuffing and some picky bits. We do this when we want an alternative to a bbq. Can all be prepared in advance, hosts can socialise without slaving away at a bbq/in kitchen. Really good feedback whenever we've done it.

easy - tapas! some can be served cold, bring hot ones out as and when done as they would in a tapas bat in spain. i'd get small stiff disposable plates so people can grab a clean one each time they get more food. great for grazing.

hellohungry · 28/11/2025 20:38

I would also do buffet style, in this sort of situation people can graze with a little at a time and people will eat at different times, i would do a side of salmon, a ham, cheeses, a couple of salads, potatoes, smoked salmon blinis, sausage rolls, mini sausages hummus & veg stics, crusty bread then buy some ice cream bites for dessert!

Lamontaine · 28/11/2025 22:37

I have a similar scenario coming up which I am getting nervous about.
I am planning on doing a buffet style; seafood, oysters, salmon, cheese, charcuterie, easy to eat salads. And a lot of champagne!
We will be 4 couples and 6 kids.

Sorry did we step back to 1987?

Absolutely not! Messy and totally not conducive with what the op describes!

Quiche, salad, new potatoes

something lighter given the time of year and then a lovely indulgent dessert

Absolutely not!
Who the hell wants quiche and salad in December? Unless you're in Australia 🤣

We host a Christmas party every year, 15-20 people, can only sit 10, so we do a similar thing.
We go with a theme, making eating with hand/hands part of the fun.
German market theme is good. Big sausages from Costco, then lots of toppings people can do themselves, mustard, cheese, crispy onions etc. We have a hot plate and set it up in advance.
Dauphinoise potatoes, garlic mushrooms and garlic bread, go well with it. I leave food grade boxes, like takeaway ones out and people help themselves as and when.
Last year we did chicken and veggies in the slow cooker, served stuffing and wrapped them in shop brought giant Yorkshires, like a wrap, tinfoil at the bottom. Went down well!
You're not hosting a dinner party, embrace it and people will appreciate the effort!
Other stations I have set up- waffle & crepe, hot chocolate, cocktails etc. most of all have fun!

mamaduckbone · 29/11/2025 21:44

Two things we have done very successfully for that many people is chilli - choice of meat and 3 bean - with rice and nachos on the side, and pulled pork with coleslaw and mac and cheese as a side.
Both can be served in bowls and eaten with just a fork.

mamaduckbone · 29/11/2025 21:45

Or curry would also work well.

Dizzybet74 · 30/11/2025 18:38

I really like the grazing boards I've seen people post for Christmas..they make shapes like trees etc..or put on brown/greaseproof paper and write in Sharpie what it is..you could start with that and then have bowl food like others said. For dessert I'd do something you can make in advance. I've seen amazing Pavlova's that people have made look like a wreath so that would be very fitting.

JDM625 · 30/11/2025 18:55

What are you comfortable cooking OP? A dinner party isn't the time to try something completely new. More regular meals often have a pimped up/next level version we might have suggestions to if you let us know what you like cooking.

Could you borrow a fold up table and chairs? We've hosted. I had just the frame of an old, metal table in the garden, added some plywood and a table cloth and added it to the end of our dining table to make a T shape. Borrowed some fold up chairs and we could all sit together. Eating on your lap doesn't sound great at a dinner party.

If people must eat on their laps- Maybe canape type entrees that people can just pick up and eat. Chicken liver parfait or smoked salmon. Then some sort of bowl main?
