Do you want a repacked set or to make one up yourself? Good cheese is phenomenally expensive.

I've done this before and don't get a hamper I'd rather go to a cheesemonger and get 2 or three nice pieces of cheese a box of nice crackers and a nice bottle of port and pack it yourself. Much better value for money.

I agree. Definitely nicer. What could you substitute the port with if someone doesn't drink?

Something like an elderflower presse?

I would go with a hard cheese (Snowdonia rock star, amber mist or black bomber are my favourites), a blue cheese/goats cheese (Waitrose sells Capricorn which is quite mild and not crazy goat-y), and a soft cheese. I reckon you could do this bit for £15-20.

Then I would get something like some membrillo paste or a quince cheese or a jar of chutney (again, Waitrose does some nice ones) and a box of crackers by Peter's Yard. Probably up to £25 now.

Then a bottle of red wine or port or you could also go for a dry sherry if they aren't a fan of sweet things. Tawny port is more convenient because it doesn't have to be drunk in one sitting. Dark sherries have the same advantage.

Assuming you've already schlepped to Waitrose for the cheese, their dry amontillados are lovely and both are a bargain at £10-14. You could also do Graham's 10 year old tawny at £25 if you fancied something a bit pricier, or Asda have Taylor's 10 year old for £20. If you want a cheaper port go for a late bottled vintage port. You should be able to get something for £12-15.

What about Norfolk punch? A bit unusual so quite nice for a present

If it’s for delivery M&S have a Cheese and Wine Hamper on their website.

Depending on where you live , your local market cheese stall should have some good Christmas gifts. We have one in Bolton , they’re a great couple of girls who are really passionate about cheese and wine. They have some great gifts and will tell you which wines to pair the cheese with .

Donostiera · 27/11/2025 13:19

Try the Wine Society, they have really nice gifts with free postage

I need to put more thought into it i think....thanks for the great ideas.

M&S usually have a piece of fancy cheese and mini bottle on a little wooden board. They make good little gifts..

Paxton and Whitfield are good if you want a gift delivered by post.
