DDs back in the 90s had white Lego with roof bricks and doors and made lots of houses, furniture etc.
is there anything similar rather than modern Lego sets which make one expensive elaborate fiddly thing. which is made then that’s it.
i can buy old Lego on eBay but wondered if any other company made something like that.

You can buy tubs of Lego bricks that you can then create with.
If you’re near London I find the refillable tubs are actually really good value. With strategic scooping you can get so many of those extra bits in.

Lego Creator is what you want. Regular blocks to make whatever you like.

As it's pretty much indestructible it's good second hand as well.

DS had something like this when he was little, it kept him occupied for hours. It came with some suggestions for builds but you could make what you liked.

There are an awful lot of knock of lego sets, which might cover what you want, Google lego compatible building blocks.
Mine don't build houses but we have a lot of 'lego' animal figures, plants and island themed base plates, all brought separately that get a lot more free play.

if you go onto the Lego website they have various sizes of the classic/creator sets - basically mixed boxes of colours/shapes/sizes...they've also got a sale on atm so worth a look.

Needmorelego · 27/11/2025 10:16

Just buy the Classic sets.
Yellow boxes or tubs.
You do realise you can take the models apart and build ANYTHING you want though.
It doesn't have to stay as a Millennium Falcon or whatever.

I love Classic sets.

An alternative brand that is reasonable quality is Block Tech and retailers like The Works, B+M, Home Bargains etc sell big boxes of bricks.
Zuru Max is another brand.

Daisymay8 · 27/11/2025 19:07

Thank you - lots of options to investigate!

I think real Lego is definitely better than the fakes. The fake ones don’t seem to connect as well and it can be quite frustrating when you’re trying to build something fragile. The resale value of LEGO is good too. Definitely try the yellow boxes or check for second hand ones so you can get more bricks for your bucks.

Not all non Lego sets are "fakes".
They are legitimate alternative brands.

@NeedmorelegoSorry, you are of course correct. I ‘ve been stung by some poor imitations in the past so I’m probably a bit bitter. I would also want to keep the different brands separate, which would defeat the purpose of getting lots of bricks. Love the username by the way.

Jijithecat · 29/11/2025 22:29

I would also echo the PP in recommending Lego as opposed to alternative building blocks.
It's not just the connections when building, it's also the instructions which are easier to understand thus making independent play more likely, the ability to take it apart without feeling as if it will snap and as already mentioned the resale price.
