Budget for DC

How much do you spend, how many kids and how old?

I'm debating...

Have 3 DC, ages 8, 5 and 3.

Current spend is approx £170, £120, £125 each. Which equates to their 'big' gift each plus 5-7 smaller craft items, play doh, books, blankets etc).

Debating whether or not to to add in an additional gift each at £100- 'big ticket' item which they'd all love and play with together (1 each at £100 a pop). Is this excessive? I can't decide. They'll also get gifts from 5-6 other family members.

We can afford it without debt or struggle. It's more a question of whether it's 'too much'. Previous years we've spent about £100 per kid, but COL price rises and age is meaning the budget is growing.

We’re in a similar set up and I put my foot down at £150. The DC get so much throughout the year that they really don’t need more. If there was something they genuinely wanted that was over budget, I’d get it, but I’m not spending extra on things that will just end up shoved in a cupboard.

Save the money and add it to your next holiday fund!

I've spent roughly
£250 14 yr old
£150 10 Yr old
£100 6yr old

They will receive gifts from maybe 13 other people costing roughly £5- £20 each.

Almost 4Yr Old £60-70 but she gets a lot during the year and she will get skiing equipment from grandparents.
3 months old £20.

Christmas only happens once a year and your kids will only be little for such a short time so I think if you can afford it and you know that it will make them (and you) happy then you should go for it 🥰

My 4 year old will be getting loads of presents but they’re not expensive things and most are from charity shops as his favourite thing is opening them and I like creating that big pile of suprises for him 🥰

Are they likely to get much throughout the year? If you can afford it and they aren’t spoilt with gifts throughout the year I would add a big ticket item. What kind of value will gifts from family be? £5? £20? More ?

Family gifts usually £15-25ish

What is the thing, is it worth £100 and do they really need one each?

Pearlmaster500 · 24/11/2025 12:31

Honestly spend what you want! They are your kids, there’s no right or wrong answer, if you can afford it definitely spoil your kids I always do! I think I’ve spent about £300 on my 6 year old one present was £180 but she was desperate for the ninja creami and I’m quite invested myself so I kind of got it for both of us 🤣 then other bits and bobs and spent about £80 on my 4 month old which is just toys and Christmas outfits really. When you think about it there are very wealthy kids getting gifts things like Rolexes, luxury cars and designer clothes or bags for Christmas so I don’t think it’s unreasonable at all to spend that much on each child
