What can I buy for my toddler grandchild to give to her parents for Christmas?

I'm spending Christmas with my daughter, my son, my DIL and my granddaughter. I'll be giving them all presents from me, but I was thinking about getting something from my little granddaughter to give to the others from her.

Can you think of cute gifts for about £20 or so? Happy to spend a bit more if necessary.

Sorry, I agree with those that are saying it is overstepping. It would be different if the child was older and had chosen a gift when they were with you.

It’s only a Grandparent’s job when there is a single parent imo. Otherwise each parent needs to help their child buy for the other.

I usually make something with dgc. Last year was a frame for Dd and SIL with a picture of dgc in it. We had great fun.

We have made tree decorations, biscuits, handprint trees. I love doing it.

MrsD0147 · 28/11/2025 14:34

Ahh I don't think it is overstepping at all. If my mum or MIL did this I would think it was really lovely even though me and my husband would have already technically sorted this for the other. I think the homemade is a cute idea but if you don't have her 1-1 obviously that is hard so i would just go with something small like chocolate or a plant

PurpleThistle7 · 28/11/2025 14:52

I think it’s a lovely idea and taking the time to help your GD make something (or ‘make’ something depending on age!) would be lovely. An ornament is perfect as you can make something each year together

IAmKerplunk · 28/11/2025 14:53

Why on earth would any parent be offended by a grandparent buying a small token gift from the grandchild for both parents at Christmas? 🤣

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/11/2025 14:56

I think it’s a lovely idea and you could do something yearly like something to put on the Christmas tree so whether a bauble that you paint together for clay handprint New paragraph or a picture that she draws that you get framedPp

Because sometimes grandparents like to take over, like my MIL did similar when mine were young framing it with ‘mummy is far too busy with work to think about this stuff so I better do it so poor daddy doesn’t miss out’ (when of course we both bought each other gifts from the children). Sometimes grandparents like to be in charge and remind everyone that they’re ‘the head of the family’. This may not be the case with the OP which is why I think she should ask first.

How is buying a bauble with no caustic comments taking over?

It’s pp who have suggested a home made gift or a bauble. The OP was asking about spending £20 each. In my opinion a token gift fine- spending more (£20 or more) with the intention of being the ‘main’ present from baby to parent may be stepping on toes which is why I think it’s better to ask. We have no idea if the OP would make comments or not.

I assume the best in people in this kind of situation and that op is just trying to do something nice for her GC and the parents and has no intention of making a caustic comment. Nobody has said anything about a main present - it’s a gift under £20 for the parents as a surprise ‘from a GC’ Who could possibly be offended at that?

A good number of people have posted on the thread, not just me, who have said it might be seen as over stepping so, just in case, it’s probably best to check so not to offend.

pigmygoatsinjumpers · 28/11/2025 16:29

OP's post suggests that she's not just thinking of a present for the two year old to give to her parents but also for the toddler to give gifts to the other relatives who will be present.

A two year old will barely understand what Christmas is about. I would consider it over stepping unless it has been run past the parents first. And presents of up to £20 seems excessive if that is the budget for each present rather than for all the presents.

IAmKerplunk · 28/11/2025 16:35

I completely misread the op - definitely don’t buy gifts from your GC to give to other relatives but honestly still can’t see the harm in getting a surprise gift from GC to the parents
