Skin care for ten year old

Hi, can anyway direct me towards skin care for a ten year old girl. I’m looking for something gentle, inexpensive but appealing. She’s requested skin care products but not been specific as to brand.
I’m thinking cleanser, moisturiser and an spf cream.

She's a child and doesn't need skin care products, other than SPF lotion if it's very sunny.

@peafritterandcurrysauce I would be very careful when selecting products and make sure there are no active ingredients that will harm her skin in the long term. There has been a social media trend in the last few years of pre teens using skincare products with ingredients like retinol, AHA’s/BHA’s, and high levels of “brightening ingredients” like Ascorbic Acid (pure Vit C) that are completely unsuitable for young skin. I would focus on products designed for pre teen skin like: https://www.petiteskinco.com
Some of the Byoma or The Ordinary products would work too. The cleanser/moisturiser/spf combo is a great idea though. You could even throw in a (basic) face mist - mostly because they’re fun! Stick to gentle hydrating ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin and avoid heavy fragrance , particularly if it comes from essential oils. A lot of people think they’re “safer” than synthetic fragrance but they are actually more likely to cause direct damage or trigger allergic reactions.

None at all. How awful.

peafritterandcurrysauce · 22/11/2025 22:24

In principle I agree with the non at all responses. However this is a child who has requested this as her “only thing that I really want” gift and without going into detail won’t have much else to look forward to this Christmas. @rileyy. Thanks for your advice. That was really helpful.

Agreed. Let's encourage young girls to cover themselves in chemicals every day in the pursuit of flawless skin. Fab.

Monvelo · 22/11/2025 22:26

Where's she even got the idea from?
It would be a definite no from me, sorry.

Tinks15 · 22/11/2025 22:35

OP I posted a similar question a few months back & got this sort of response. My daughter is the same age & she’s mad for skin care/beauty. She doesn’t actually own much at all but she’s forever asking for all these fancy products (which I don’t buy may I add). I do agree they don’t need all these products at such a young age however with the world we live in now & with a lot of girls/friends being into this sort of thing it’s quite difficult to get away from this. I think as long as the skincare is gentle & ingredients are clean then there’s no harm in them having a couple of bits.

Bubble and Byoma have lovely tween-friendly packaging. I think Milly Bobby Brown has her own range too which might appeal.

I don’t think it’s that terrible - I remember my mum buying me my first bottle of Oil of Ulay (!) when I was 11. Just get gentle products without any actives. A mild cleanser and a light moisturiser aren’t going to do her any harm. It’s not like she’s asked for a bottle of Sauvignon blanc and a packet of Durex!

rileyy · 22/11/2025 22:42

@peafritterandcurrysauce You’re welcome. I was that kid too, and I assure you that I wasnt “covering myself in chemicals in the pursuit of flawless skin” 😂
Literally everything is a chemical - that’s just an asinine statement from that poster. I had no concept of my skin being “perfect”, I just found it fun and I liked my little routine before bed. Some people can’t comprehend that, so pay them no mind!
Some of the replies on here, you’d think you were taking her to get a chemical peel and Botox. A simple gentle face wash, moisturiser and SPF is hardly that!

Blarn · 22/11/2025 22:47

My dd uses this elf one, it's mainly glycerin and very gentle. I used to get a very similar one from Beauty Bay which had very few ingredients in it but they stopped doing it. Dd1 is nearly 11 and I remind her to use it after swimming to help get the chlorine off her face as it can go a bit dry.

I dont encourage 'skincare' for her at all but I used to wash my face with soap as my mum did and then when I started secondary school my friends and I went to Boots and bought Oxy and Clearsil in an attempt to obliterate spots. I still had spots but also incredibly dry skin! If I can steer my dds towards looking after their faces with a gentle wash and a moisturiser when needed I don't think that's a bad thing.

Thanks @peafritterandcurrysauceand @rileyy
i have a similar aged DD also looking for simple products to make her feel part of the gang when her friends are talking about their skincare regimes but not wanting to abuse her skin so young!!

some great ideas on this thread.

thanks.

minipie · 22/11/2025 23:00

Seconding Bubble and Byoma, both sold in Boots and popular with tweens. But do check the ingredients and stay away from too many “actives”. Niacinamide is ok.

I have a 10 year old, she sadly has inherited my acne and has had it for a year or so. She gets blackheads. My other daughter started getting spots at a similar age, and she used to suffer with dry chapped skin whenever the weather got cold. The idea that 10 year olds never need skincare is too sweeping. Some do some don’t.

I do agree though that you need to be careful what is in it.

peafritterandcurrysauce · 22/11/2025 23:48

Thanks everyone. I feel much more confident about what I’m doing now.

I have a 12 year old and you won’t go wrong with elf, byoma or bubble 😊

noscoobydoodle · 23/11/2025 06:45

My 12 year old DD also like Elf, bubble and byoma- popular in her friend group but some of it she finds a bit harsh - she has sensitive skin. She use Simple and CeraVe. She also uses pimple patches - seem to be a badge of honour!

66babe · 23/11/2025 06:49

My 10 year old granddaughter has asked for the exact same - skin care and makeup
I’ve so far given her some baby lotion and cotton pads , she’s now an expert on cleansing apparently..
I see it as harmless , she’s not on the retinol

Spf should be when uv is over three, not only when its sunny, everyone needs face wash.

rainbowsinheaven · 23/11/2025 06:49

Bubble and Byoma are popular choices at that age

Pricelessadvice · 23/11/2025 06:52

Kids grow up far too fast nowadays. When I was 10 I still wanted toys at Christmas.

PegDope · 23/11/2025 06:55

Same @Pricelessadvice

I wanted a Barbie when I was 10.

It’s unutterably sad that young girls are concerned with anything to do with their physical appearance.

Im guessing they all have access to influencers.

No, my dd does not have a phone, she has no access to tik tok, instgram, can only watch a few things on kids youtube like making dolls house furniture (although I do allow aphmau which I hate but understand she needs to be able to join in some of the things her friends do). For Christmas she has asked for art supplies and clothes for her Our Generation doll.

But sometimes faces need more than just water to wash them and all my face washes are too harsh for her. What are the other options, hand soap or showergel?

MabelMoo23 · 23/11/2025 20:53

My 10 year old has byoma. But literally just the face wash and moisturiser- there’s nothing wrong with washing your face, and if you use something to clean your face, yes even soap, then really you should be using moisturiser
