Garlands on stairs, how?

How do I hang/wrap my garland on the stairs? I tried the little command hooks but they didn’t work. Last year I resorted to a load of sellotape, what am I doing wrong?

cable ties are your friend here

TimeForATerf · 22/11/2025 12:06

Mine are wired so they just wrap around and stay there, they are in three pieces.

QuietDownRobyn · 22/11/2025 12:07

Cable ties in green, you can also get these one which are the same as the garland. You might need to twist two ends together to make them long enough.

I swag mine along the bottom and use ribbon that is tied to the garland and then tied onto the spindles.

The best thing about YouTube is seeing how people decorate their houses for Christmas, including interior designers who taught me how to light a tree so it has a lot of depth to the lighting plus how to decorate it too.

Cable ties, pipe cleaners, fishing wire or invisible thread.

don’t think of cable ties!

Didnt know you could get wired ones!

Big command hooks, lots of them, and cable ties. The little ones are not strong enough for the weight.

WhatdoesitmeanKeith · 22/11/2025 12:11

I loop mine around the newel posts at the top and bottom and then just let it hang in a swag slightly over the edge.

but i use ribbon which has wire along each edge so i can make nice bows.
If you use cable ties you can disguise them with bows too

bottledboot · 22/11/2025 12:25

I will update in Dec when I put it up!

If you hang a hook on either side of each post where the swag is going high, it helps to share the load across each hook - it’s almost doing engineering and load management on each hook

sesquipedalian · 22/11/2025 13:08

OP, if you hang it just under the banister, you can tie it to the spindles. I use green garden twine - it doesn’t show, and it holds it fast. It also means you can still use the banister to climb the stairs.

Make sure they're dried out a little first, and use long florist wire

anibendod · 22/11/2025 13:46

I'm not sure if they are available this year, but in the range a few years ago I bought clear reusable cable ties that are fab for securing stair garlands. They tend to hang them on the type of packaging that they hang those mini bags of nuts on in pubs. I found mine on a random aisle end display near the garland section

ProfessorDameMonsterSink · 22/11/2025 13:50

I saw someone on Tiktok who had half a pool noodle or pipe insulation cut in half which popped over the bannister, then stuck the garland to that. He'd cut the garland into noodle-sized lengths so literally just got each one out of the box and popped it on. Obviously depends on the shape and size of your bannister vs insulation pipe though.

NicPapr25 · 22/11/2025 14:58

Green garden wire (the type that has plastic covering), if you can’t get green cable ties

Mum2Fergus · 22/11/2025 14:59

Pipe cleaners

zaxxon · 22/11/2025 15:03

I use rubber bands, which are free (thanks, royal mail!)

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/11/2025 15:05

I use the green furry garden string (it looks nicely rustic if it shows). I also live in a house where command hooks don't work, whatever weight ones I get, they fall off the wall in the middle of the night and cause much consternation.

GinkoRebelFoxes · 22/11/2025 16:22

I use garden twine. It helps that my staircase is plain wood, so it isn't very visible.
