Christmas Eve Food

Has anyone had their Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve instead of the day itself? If so do you prefer it? I'm thinking of trying it this year and having picky type foods on Christmas Day.

Yes, we did it for a first time last year and it was a revelation. We’re doing it again this year. It makes Christmas day so much more relaxed.

ILoveCatsAndKittens · 21/11/2025 21:19

Weve done it for quite a few years now! It means that we spend actual christmas day taking time opening presents and playing with them as a family, rather than one of us (me!) being stuck in the kitchen for majority of the day.
Friends and family thiught we were mad at first but iver the years have understood why and some now even do the same!

Gice it a try and see what you think!

SisSuffragette · 21/11/2025 22:26

We've done it since before our kids were born and love it this way x

I do this every year. Main xmas meal on Xmas eve then left overs and nibbly bits like crackers, cheeses etc etc on Xmas day, with a healthy helping of Xmas chocolate ofc.

For the last ten years.

I’ve tried it but I didn’t like having to do so much labour-intensive cooking in the evening.

We are doing this too. Meal on 24th and picky plates on 25th maybe even 26th too

Yes, done it a couple of times and doing it again this year. Makes more of the Xmas period by stretching it out and also spreads the food out so people actually want to eat it. The Xmas day buffet is my favourite bit.

What time do you end up eating if doing all that cooking on Xmas Eve? It's not like it's a bank holiday.

TwinklyNight · 22/11/2025 01:42

Yes, often. Still tons of delicious foods left over plus all the extra cheese, pate and other nibbly things. We saved the opening of gifts for the 25th though.

vinylvibes · 22/11/2025 07:53

Ooh thank you everyone, think I'll give it a go 😊

We do it a different way round in that we have buffet on Christmas Day and the dinner on Boxing Day. Works better for us.

Luckyingame · 22/11/2025 07:55

Yes, it's a tradition where I come from.

Aww yeah I'd do the rest of Christmas Day as normal, like presents too. I'm just fed up of cooking on the day itself. We looked to eat out for Christmas Day this year, but it's so expensive. Where we live it's 3 courses as well and I can just manage a small dinner 😆 So would be a waste of money

No..but i do all the prep on Xmas eve.

All veggies peeled and ready to go. Roast potatoes, parsnips etc par boiled and cooled ready for roasting.

Stuffing made up and in dish, so can be bunged in.

Gravy will be made on day, but stock will be fine soon, just need to finish off the roast chicken we're having tomorrow, then those bones will be used, along other veggie scraps/peels/bones I've been putting in a zip lock in freezer past few weeks

Then in the day,it's just basically chucking it all in!

We did it when I was a kid and it was amazing, proper family time on Xmas eve and then spent all day grazing, presents, going for a walk without anyone (my mum) being in the kitchen for hours on the day itself. I’d love to do it but my DP isn’t keen
