Panettone

There's a lot of it in the shops at the moment. I think I had it once and it was basically just a curranty bread. Am I missing something? I'm prepared to give it another go. Which one would you recommend?

I love them! Christmas cake and Christmas pudding is too dense for me, so it's perfect to get that festive smell and taste but still nice and light.

A good one shouldn't be dry, and I don't fuck with overly fancy chocolate/pistachio/whatever ones. Just normal panettone for me, preferably from the Italian deli.

I guess I’m in a minority here but absolutely love a good classic panettone! Must be fresh so not dry and love the light, airy texture along with the gorgeous scent. It’s a feast of touch and taste

I'm not alone! More for us I guess?

I'm not a fan of heavy/soggy/dense cakes and prefer breads and buns so a good quality classic panettone is a dream for me.

All the "variations" can get in the bin though.

MulberryPeony · 20/11/2025 16:36

Yep just the traditional fruit one toasted with butter. I’d love to try the beautifully packaged ones in tins some day! Until then I’ll stick with the cheapo ones from Crosta & Mollica.

Candlesandmatches · 20/11/2025 16:39

They shouldn’t be dry. They should be light and a texture between sponge cake and a brioche. They are actually really time and space intensive to make.

oopsHereItIs · 20/11/2025 17:29

I love it! Especially the chocolate ones; if they're dry just whop butter on it!

CandiedPrincess · 20/11/2025 17:53

I adore it, and any leftovers go into a bread and butter pudding at New Year.

Fibrous · 20/11/2025 17:57

We love them but there are a lot of shit ones about. You have to choose wisely.

SMC1984 · 20/11/2025 18:17

Not an essential for my Christmas.
I do like to buy a cheap one after Christmas, slice it and toast it with jam on though.

Sgtmajormummy · 20/11/2025 18:24

I once set a microwave on fire by toasting panettone too close to the grill!
It’s full of butter or vegetable oil so spreading more on top is gilding the lily IMO.

The sooner you eat it the better as they start making them in October and the cardboard packaging/plastic and wire twist isn’t particularly airtight. The ones in a tin probably keep their flavour for longer.

We’ve already had two of the Italian Co-op basic panettoni (€7 and deliciously fresh) for dessert or breakfast so I expect the total to be about 8 by the end of the holidays!

Me too - love a pannetone (no weird flavours for me - had to be the classic kind). I really don’t have a sweet tooth, so I actually like the fact that it’s more bready than cakey and not too sweet.

Yes it’s fruity bread. Great in a bread pudding.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/11/2025 19:00

I like the lemon ones , not chocolate or sultanas.
I don't like bread'n'butter pudding

Bought a couple of mini ones , they are lurking in the pantry , waiting .

Ophy83 · 20/11/2025 20:45

I love them, I usually get a proper Italian one from a deli in Faversham. I noticed Angela Hartnett has done one for Waitrose this year so that may be good. Lovely with a glass of vin santo or marsala.

Tiedbutchorestodo · 20/11/2025 20:49

I would have said I don’t like them but I’ve been dreaming about the Aldi pistachio and chocolate one since last year - if it’s the same this year I shall be buying in bulk!

WellMaybeYouShouldntBeLivingHeeeeeeee · 20/11/2025 20:53

They shouldn’t be dry at all! That’s why they’re so lovely. We get these ones every year: www.valvonacrolla.co.uk/vandc-classic-panettone-500g

kalokagathos · 20/11/2025 21:01

I absolutely love it. The texture mostly with the vanilla, orange notes running through it. I could eat half of it easily with non sweet coffee mmmmm

Norugratsatall · 20/11/2025 21:18

Love love love panettone! Will eat it over Xmas pudding and Xmas cake every time.

Forthelov · 20/11/2025 21:22

Wherearemysunglasses · 20/11/2025 13:08

Toast slices under the grill and have with butter. Think of it as a xmassy hot cross bun!

Yes, this is what we do. Delicious for Christmas Day breakfast!

ChubbyPuffling · 20/11/2025 21:56

Found that my husband's family didn't like panettone as it was dry. But when I got one from a local bakery that was fresh, feather light and virtually tore into ribbons, they couldn't believe it was the same thing.

awakeandasleep · 20/11/2025 22:07

I love them! I have a chunk at breakfast with my morning coffee.

I have bought this little beauty.Grin

It's so expensive but I love it - I have a bread machine recipe that's really lush. It's basically a brioche with extras.

AnotherNewName460 · 20/11/2025 22:16

@Oldandcobwebby @ReignOfError
do either of you have a receipt for the bread maker please? (I also have a Panasonic).

I always used to think panettone was dry fruit bread until I bought one reduced in Waitrose after xmas last year, it was delicious!!

JetFlight · 20/11/2025 22:22

I love panettone. We got given two one year so made bread and butter pudding with some. It was really good.

Mossstitch · 20/11/2025 22:30

@SMC1984 try aldi ready sliced brioche loaf for about £1.69 very similar toasted, can recommend and you can have all year around👍
I like panettone/pandora as like other people I prefer plain, less sweet foods than traditional British xmas cakes/mince pies etc but can't understand why it's so expensive as the ingredients are so simple.🤷
