Hello, all and welcome to this lovely space for our continued chats.

A bit of background for anyone not familiar with this topic:
The Nigel Slater Christmas Chronicles readalong usually takes place here between November and February each year (the Christmas Chronicles being a book written by Nigel Slater full of winter recipes and anecdotes) It's been running for a few years, and the contributors have collectively decided it would be nice to have it running all year round.

So here it is. It is a place to appreciate all things Nigel-esque. Think seasonal food and recipes, enjoyment of nature, gardening, appreciation of the weather, and sharing of news and small moments of joy. It's a calm, cosy space for gentle chat and merriment so pull up a chair to the fireplace, grab a drink and relax.

A very hearty welcome to friends new and old!

Oh my goodness @RainbowZebraWarrior what a sweet thing, I hope he / she is OK.

@Bimblesalong ooh, waterproof headphones, one reason I don't swim much is that I get SO bored, do you have a link to them? Do you have to have your phone on the poolside for them to work? I'd be a bit nervous about it walking (I am very short-sighted and even with prescription goggles can't see very well).

@leporello how fabulous, the ROH is on my bucket list.

A gorgeous sunny day here today, I was out with DD this morning but have had to pop into work now for a couple of hours. Very much nicer than yesterday with it's sleety showers.

ExquisiteDresses · 26/03/2026 14:32

Oh and Raising Hare, I had the paperback and didn't finish it because I was bored and sent it to the charity shop, but having read so many posts on here I have reserved the audiobook from the library to give it a second chance in a different format (not prepared to use an Audible credit though so will have to wait a few weeks).

The audiobook definitely suits me better. It isn't read by the author, but feels like it is IYSWIM, and is a nice, easy listen.

By the time I got back down to the beach, the seal pup and the medic were gone. I'm assuming all is well and seal pup was either returned to the sea, or taken away for treatment. I shall call by the nature reserve tomorrow and find out what happened. We have massive issues atm with folk not giving the seals adequate distance. It's easier (logistically) to tell people on land to give them space, but the trend for paddle boarding etc has now meant we have had to get the police on board to stipulate a 200 metre berth of the haul out zone from the shoreline out at sea.

Hope you manage a bit more rest time after your crazy busy work time @martha79 Those seeds look fab. I almost ordered from there, but stopped myself as I have more than enough for now. I am very tempted by their t shirts, mind as I see they use Teemill, and the designs are really lovely.

My zinnia, lobelia and nicotiana have sprouted all of a sudden today, and the sweet peas are also doing well. I need more hours (and energy) to keep up!

OP posts:
piscofrisco · 26/03/2026 21:20

How exciting re the seal! I hope it was ok in the end!
DH was so fed up with me bemoaning the lack of garden at our rented house that he has gone out and bought be me 4 big terracotta pots (2 for 1 at Morrisons garden centre apparently), so at least I have something to plant up. Now busy plotting what to put in them. They will cheer up the horrible back yard here a touch anyway. It was very sweet of him.
I’ve also got some space at work to pretty up a bit so assuming I feel better over the weekend I might go on the hunt for some seeds and plug plants.
I had said I wasn’t doing it this year but I feel the itch to garden a bit .
Just realised I’ve failed to book either bank holiday day off work so no long Easter weekend for me. Dingbat. That said my Mother and the PIL are coming Good Friday to Easter Monday so actually maybe it’s better I'm
out of the shout for a fair portion of it :)

CrushingOnRubies · 26/03/2026 21:48

Awww love the story of the seal. Hope it’s ok and was at the sanctuary for a quick once over and is released swiftly.

Bimblesalong · 26/03/2026 22:18

Seeds and seals. What loveliness. I hope the seal is doing ok and how gorgeous to be up close to it.

I have had the first rehearsal of the choir I hope to join. I have “How lovely is thy dwelling place” as an earworm, and not a bad one at that.

ExquisiteDresses · 26/03/2026 23:36

Went to Costco today (NVN) and couldn't resist this beautiful tin. Will probably take the pannetone to work, it's enormous (tin is 20cm diameter)

Year round Nigel Slater discussion thread - Part 3
Confusedmeanderings · 27/03/2026 00:31

That is one lovely tin @ExquisiteDresses !

How lovely to be that close to a seal pup @RainbowZebraWarrior . Many years ago, I went paddling in the sea with an adult seal. It came up behind me as I was paddling and walking along the shoreline and then kept pace with me for about 10 minutes. If I jumped over a wave, it's head and neck would bob up out of the water as it was jumping too. It was magical to think such a wild creature was choosing to interact with me.

EphemeraleEudemonia · 27/03/2026 07:46

Lovely to catch up the thread. So many interesting things going on in everyone's lives.
We've had every kind of weather here including serious wind and snow but no time to deal with the effects, beyond rescuing some damaged daffs and veg.

I'm currently going through the most awful whistle blowing process, (I had to speak up) and as they say, 'the body keeps the score.' in my case quite visibly.
I've been utterly humbled by some of the most vulnerable and guileless people telling me looking after myself might be the most supportive thing I could do for them actually, so @piscofrisco from a pot to a kettle:as someone also working with community and under funded, over stretched, and guilt at taking time out, and one Ds with young people very dependent on the level of what he brings them, you 100% have to make peace with " ensure your own oxygen mask is working, and put on first." You have to make yourself do it, even when it's counter intuitive.
When our health breaks (as mines previously done, and Ds is threatening to do) we are of no use to those we are trying to not let down, and they will never understand why we didn't take care of ourselves better, for their sake, if nothing else.

What a lovely gesture from your DH.

@SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense Re chard; can I suggest lose the last half inch of the stem to the compost pot, and trying washing your chard with 1/4 teaspoon bicarb of soda and vinegar, to combat a 'muddy' flavor. It will reduce any mushiness and holds the color. (though too much will turn them mushy or soapy) It's something we do if only older dandelion leaves are available, to reduce bitterness.
General rule of thumb here is blanch don't boil, but if you do, then about 1/4 tsp of bicarb in the water.

Preferably just soak in water with a little bicarb quarter to half an hour before dropping them ion a hot skillet with olive oil and salt, or into a stir fry.

Try adding fat, or lemon, balsamic or honey, and I'm very in agreement with @martha79s approach and stir frying.
Also big yes to self seeding plants. They're telling us where they'd like to grow.

Mice: combo of good cheese and peanut butter works well here. But if you're out a lot, drill a couple of air holes in the back of the trap, or they can die (badly) while waiting to be released.
@martha79 What lovely elegant seed packets!

@RainbowZebraWarrior Wow, to your beautiful seal! What a wonderful find.
Fingers crossed for it.
It's me who wanted but couldn't really afford red crocosmia lucifer.
Thank you so much for checking out Lidle, that's an us budget price!
Will go searching ours or further afield. (what makes it to where, often seems quite random)

@ExquisiteDresses That looks fabulous, including the tin. Costco isn't VN until it is!

@Bimblesalong if you have a Costco,it'd worth the outlay of joining for the fuel savings. I actually rarely go in! The membership pays for itself on fuel savings and if you use a fair bit soon puts you in profit. They absorb lots of rises for their customers, and while everyone including theirs, has gone through the roof because of hostilities, they're still 10p a litre cheaper than anywhere else in a big distance between us and them.

Re cloches and CoL budgets etc: 2 lire drinks bottles cut down aren't quite as pretty, but they do the job well enough. Their contents aren't things we buy, so we get them get them through putting out requests on freecycle etc.
If the aesthetic annoys it's improved by cutting the neck off.

Few days in pics, including first emergency batch cook of storm damaged veg. Basic smokey veg curry which more bits can be added to.

I'm a sucker for a gorgeous panettone tin and have far too many. This is my favourite and although winter themed, itbstays out all year round. Ive also just realised I have a large nocciolato one from Christmas, as yet unopened.

The weather is atrocious here and I am standing in a queue in the rain for the latest Pokemon trainer box drop. The things I do for my DD! We even arranged to drop her at school 25 mins early so I'd get a guarantee of a place. It's a limited edition thing...

I have also left everything till the last minute for our Easter Craft fair tomorrow. Doh! Packing the car in the rain it is then. Such fun!

I absolutely, whole heartedly agree and live by this:

"" ensure your own oxygen mask is working, and put on first." You have to make yourself do it, even when it's counter intuitive.
When our health breaks..."

I have also been there, seen it and lived it. I see it happening to others all the time and it's like watching a car crash in slow motion. The problem is, we rarely take notice until we have to. We think we owe it to x, y, z, that we must not give in. Must not 'let others down'. My health and wellbeing absolutely comes first now and always should have done, when I think back. Giving too much to others (work and relationships) was a major factor in my health deteriorating seemingly overnight in my late 40s. I also worked too long literally fixing other people's bodies and broke my own in the process. I fully recognise now that I was a total martyr, a people pleaser, and I also pig headedly believed I was indispensable.

Lovely tins!

I'm so sorry you're going through that @EphemeraleEudemonia - when you know you have to do the right thing, but it still takes a big toll on you.

You're right @RainbowZebraWarrior and I think a big part of it is that we get so much praise for doing a lot - people marvel at you doing it all rather than saying "err, maybe you shouldn't..."

I've not done much so far today. Got a friend coming round shortly - I was meant to go out and meet her but I'm quite wobbly. Thought we might sit in the garden but the sun is very on and off, and it's still very windy.

It's also payday - trying to be a little careful with money this month (I actually have some savings at the moment, and I want to build them up). I have just treated myself to three books for £1 each from Vinted - I read 'The President's Hat' by Antoine Laurain on the library ebook thing and really liked it, so I've got some more of his. Also bought a copy of one of them in French to see how my rusty reading level is.

No cooking here - I'm eating various salads and hot cross buns for the next couple of days, before another ready meal delivery on Sunday.

DameProfessorIDareSay · 27/03/2026 12:56

I treated myself to a knitted alpaca hat at Christmas, and added what is basically a ‘birds nest material dispenser’ to my order, in an effort to stop the local birds ransacking my hanging baskets. Hung it up this week.

The local corvid population have been visiting today to add the alpaca clippings to what will be rather posh nests!

(They are still shredding my hanging baskets, the devils).

I’m absolutely guilty of not making sure my own oxygen mask is on first a lot although I’ve got better at it with age.
That said im
glsd I’ve come to work today as I’ve helped deliver this Lamb and then spent an absolutely lovely hour building a wormery with the co farmers. A very wholesome day so far!

An update:
DD2's bedroom is now spotless as I took advantage of her absence and the mouse potentially being under the bookcase to move all the furniture and give it a good dust and hoover as she likes to live in a complete shit tip. She's due home next week so that's all good.
But the mouse's absence was a mystery.
The cat spent yesterday messing with us - she spent 20 minutes trying to get under/behind the shelf of recipe books in the kitchen, then went upstairs and stared under my bed for about 45 minutes, then made me get all my photo albums off a shelf in the spare room so she could have a look behind them! I'm sure she was just winding me up as she obviously also had no idea where it was either - that, or it was quantum tunnelling around the house.
Then last night I was at the pub quiz and had 4 missed calls from DD3 followed by a flurry of texts about how the mouse was under her wardrobe (and, from the panic, about to eat her or something). Cat was trying to help but she didn't want the mouse to be murdered so she just shut her bedroom door and went to sleep in the spare room. With the cat.
I put the traps back down, baited with a bit of ham.
This morning, empty traps. I am starting to despair. I zip to hobbycraft and when I get back I see @EphemeraleEudemonia 's suggestion of GOOD cheese, so I cut a bit of my best cheddar and head upstairs with it ...
and the mouse is there waiting for me in one of the traps!!
Hallelujah
I put it outside. It looked a bit bedraggled and sorry for itself (@EphemeraleEudemonia you will be happy to hear that the traps I have had air holes) and just sort of sat there but them scampered off into the undergrowth.
A happy end to an overly long mouse tale. It lived in our house for 9 days!

SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense · 27/03/2026 14:19

and I've just been back to catch up with the thread. Love the seal and the lamb, isn't spring brilliant (and I say this really as an autumn.winter person. But I like the nice bit of winter not February) Hoping you are all getting those oxygen masks in place - @Bimblesalong is doing so with a bit of choral singing so that sounds fabulous, and visits to the opera and so forth are all very sustaining.

I spent this morning in Mold because the nice yarn shop there is closing down (happily, not because of loss of business or anything just because the owner is retiring) so we had a field trip in which I went there and to the book shop and the charity shops while DH went to the record shops.
I absolutely love that tin @ExquisiteDresses - have you got a plan for it?
Hope @martha79 is feeling less wobbly for some time with a friend in the sunshine.
My cautionary costco tale is to be careful of their fuel if you drive a diesel - the petrol is apparently OK but buying diesel there ended up costing us quite a lot in new filters in the engine, and the local friendly garage chap said to steer clear. What I don't know is if that holds true for all branches or if our local one is particularly mucky.
Thank you for chard tips. I will report back.

leporello · 27/03/2026 17:39

The advice about health and oxygen masks is very timely for me - I have been feeling fluey since the interval at the opera (wild horses wouldn't have dragged me away though) and would have tried to go into work today dosed up on paracetamol extra if I hadn't seen your posts and thought 'actually, no'. A shame as it's the last day before Easter hols and I had lovely chocolates to share...but they will have to wait.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 27/03/2026 18:06

Pleased the mouse issue is finally sorted @SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense Posh cheese loving mice are definitely a thing! I have heard that said before, BTW, about 'cheap' diesel wrecking cars, although I don't have a Costco near me so have never used them specifically (I didn't even know they sold fuel) As a diesel car driver of 25 years, I have thankfully never had this issue, although I feel there should be some stringent laws on the quality.

I was literally just wondering about the lambing this morning @piscofrisco so lovely to hear of your new arrival and pleased you had a nice day. I think work can be exhausting, but also a saviour at times.

I had similar encounters with seals when I was a swim tour guide in Australia @Confusedmeanderings We would sing in the sea (to entertain the tourists if nowt interesting was happening) and the seals would pop up and bob along, watching us with interest.

Salad and hot cross buns sounds like the order of the day after your busy week @martha79 I feel I may be joining the 'non cooking' camp after an exhausting day. I am massively impressed at you buying a book in French as I would love to be bilingual.

Sending much love to you @EphemeraleEudemonia Difficult times, but you always have so much great advice for others. Look after yourself, my lovely x

My Mum had another fall late last night, so I got the phone call just as I was finishing my Pokemon duties. I've spent the day looking after her and collecting meds etc. She was advised to go to hospital, but refused 🙄 Thankfully our great GP assessed her and reckoned nowt broken this time.

Alarm set for 5am to try and get ready for tomorrow's craft fair.

OP posts:
martha79 · 27/03/2026 19:33

What a lovely lamb @piscofrisco

I'm glad you're looking after yourself @leporello

@RainbowZebraWarrior Let's see how I get on with the French - I had a very good teacher at school who let those of us who were keen do all sorts of extra work in sixth year so we were doing university-level reading... but it's been a while.

Glad your mum is ok. I'm currently distracting myself online as my dad's been whisked into hospital for some tests as he was having breathing problems. He had a heart attack a few years ago so they're being extra cautious. He sounds ok at the moment - had a long wait inside an ambulance but he reckoned that was probably more peaceful than the waiting room.

Bimblesalong · 27/03/2026 19:45

@ExquisiteDresses they’re shockz bone conducting headphones - make sure you get the waterproof ones for swimming! They could sit on that lovely tin!

@EphemeraleEudemonia thats brave and also rotten. I’m sorry you’ve been in the position that you’ve had to whistleblow and are now working through the crap.

@SheherazadesSeasonalNonsense thats good news. Huzzah. I hope Mousey doesn’t hitch any more lifts.

leporello · 27/03/2026 20:12

Best thoughts and hopes for your dad @martha79 and your mum @RainbowZebraWarrior . Let's hope they can stay out of the hospital now.

ExquisiteDresses · 27/03/2026 20:34

My cautionary tale re Costco fuel is don't get a card based on using it for that unless you've checked your branch has a petrol station, our hasn't. As for expensive diesel mistakes, I once put unleaded in DH's diesel car, that cost me £200 to get cleaned out and replaced, ouch.

I think the tin will go to my potting shed to be filled with bird seed, I have it in a big plastic tub at the moment (another Costco leftover) but there are signs of nibbling around the lid. It will look nice out there because I have a garland of cheerful fake lemons and leaves in the window already (again NVN). Photo taken last year, planting is less advanced so far this year. Although the geraniums are in my kitchen and just starting to flower again.

Thanks re headphones @Bimblesalong I will look into those.

Sorry to hear about your Mum @RainbowZebraWarrior and Dad @martha79 . I am spending increasing amounts of time caring for my parents.

My turn for the beach today, I live about 15 miles away and my parents 10 miles so I headed down early today and had a mooch and coffee before visiting both of them (DF is in a care home).

Finally, got my Easter decs up this week

Morning all.

Hope your Dad is ok @martha79

I love your greenhouse @ExquisiteDresses

The wind is howling and the last thing in the world I feel like doing is a flipping craft fair. I am really not feeling it at all. I reminded my Mum yesterday that I would be unavailable today and she told me I would just have to come round straight after and sort out her dishes etc as "your Dad will have made a mess in the kitchen" Oh Joy! I ache all over as usual already so my spoons will be long gone by then.

I have part prepped a curry this morning that I will be able to assemble easily for myself once I am home later. God I just want to hide under a duvet all day. Still, only three and a half more days at school then it's the Easter hols!

OP posts:
martha79 · 28/03/2026 07:40

Morning. Great pictures @ExquisiteDresses - I like your lemony shed.

Hope today goes well @RainbowZebraWarrior and you're soon back under the duvet.

Had a restless night waiting for news from my dad - all tests were ok but they kept him in overnight for observation and he's waiting for the consultant to do his rounds, but hopefully home soon. I feel like nobody ever really explains what this stage of life is like - you're aware that one day they'll need looking after and worrying about but it still comes as a shock. Doesn't help that he's several hundred miles away. He's meant to be coming for a visit in a few weeks, and I'm currently considering kidnapping him and making him stay here where I can keep an eye on him!

Bright, cold and windy here - I'm being harassed to get up by the cats but then making myself have a quiet day.
