Yoto when DS6 has asked for Toniebox

So DS6 has asked for a toniebox for Xmas (I think he likes the figures and has seen friends ones) but I think the yoto is probably better for his age and as he gets older?

Any advice on which on to get or if you think he’d be disappointed getting a yoto as he wouldn’t get the figures?
He’s quite a young 6.

We’ve had both. By 6 (probably by 4) we’d fully moved over to yotos. I think a lot more content has come out since we had them but we found having to hit the box to move tracks infuriating!!

A yoto will grow much better. Mine like yoto daily and the podcasts. We have both normal and minis and great for taking the mini on car journey / holidays.

IcouldbutIdontwantto · 16/11/2025 16:48

Could you buy a few yoto cards you know he'll really like to go with it - bonus if there isn't a tonie version?

I have a friend who's DC have tonies and he said there's more coming out for older kids now, but we only have a yoto and young kids so can't confirm our deny this statement 😆

Caspianberg · 16/11/2025 16:50

We have Tonie and my 5.5 year old uses daily. He’s definitely not outgrown it. There’s lots of full audio books and education topics now also. Some full books like Enid Blyton we have he’s not even started yet as too long.

Moonnstars · 16/11/2025 16:57

We bought my daughter a yoto for her 6th birthday. We got the mini and it's still used every day several years later (and we also ended up getting my son one too who is older as also wanted one once he saw how good it was). It is pretty simple to use and my daughter had no issues inserting the cards and working it. I think yoto are quite responsive and have brought out lots of cards people have requested over the years (harry potter for instance). I think you need to work out if it's the figures your son likes with the tonies box in which case maybe he wants more toys, but if it's the idea of listening to a story then I am sure he will convert to a yoto once he gets it and tries it.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 16/11/2025 17:27

Get him what he wants, not what you think he should have.

My parents were renowned for doing this to me. Year after year they'd buy me nearly the present I'd asked for, but something else instead. The year I asked for Tressy I got Sindy. I asked for a Chopper bike and got a Raleigh nearly-lookalike substitute. Another year I wanted a radio casette player. They got me a really good quality standalone cassette player (in bottle green) because they had a radio in the kitchen I could listen to.

Don't be my parents. Please.

They are super interchangeable and I doubt he would be disappointed by a yoto. Each card has their own light up picture which is really cute and if you wanted to sex it up you could buy some accessories (although I haven’t as they’re pretty overpriced).

The tonie has got better for older kids. My 8 year old just listened to a 3 part, hours long Minecraft audio book and he loved it. The audiobooks are rectangle shape and cheaper but there are still some nice figures for older kids - like nightmare before Christmas, some roald Dahl etc. to be fair I love the figures too and I’m middle aged 🤣

Housemovehopeful2024 · 16/11/2025 20:15

My 6yo still loves his Tonie and listens every night - he likes the today with tonies podcast which updates every day.

SpamIAm · 16/11/2025 20:48

I think a yoto would be really disappointing if it’s a tonie he wants, even if it is just for the appeal of the figures. I saw they’ve brought out a game for the tonie as well which looks like it’s aimed at a bit of an older age.

BraOffPjsOn · 16/11/2025 22:12

thanks for all the replies. I still don’t know what to do but these are all really helpful.

gah!

I would buy the tonie if that's what he has asked for. He might be disappointed with the lack of figures.

I didn't know what either for these things were so had to Google 🤣 I have to say the tonie box looks much more exciting and my 6 year old would love the figures. I don't think a card has the same appeal.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 16/11/2025 22:20

He has told you what he wants.

Buy it for him.

TheBirdintheCave · 16/11/2025 22:36

My son has asked for a Hot Wheels garage for his birthday. Now, he already has a garage and we’d have nowhere to put another so instead he’s getting a Hot Wheels track (Mario Kart themed which is his fav game) that can be folded away to fit in his toy box.

He’s getting plenty of other things he asked for but not that one. Nothing wrong with that 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP, I personally think the Yoto is vastly superior to Tonie box. We got the mini and my son loves that he can listen to it in the car and take it on holiday.

PlantsAndSpaniels · 17/11/2025 06:25

Download the yoto app and let him look through some of the cards and listen to them and see if that changes his mind. Not sure if you can do the same on the tonies. I think they have started stocking yotos in smyths too so could always go have a look.
Could it be that tonies are better advertised and with the new one coming out, he is more aware of them vs yoto?
Has he seen the big yoto or the yoto Mini as he might like the portability of the small one? Different colour jackets so he can change them to match his favourite colour.
So many people say that they switched at that age to yoto if they had a tonie box so I would buy a yoto but you know your child.

Searchingforsunshine · 17/11/2025 06:49

We have a tonies and a yoto mini. In my opinion yoto is superior.

Luxio · 17/11/2025 06:56

I honestly wouldn't go for the Tonie box. DS is nearly 6 and amongst friends we were the only ones with a yoto player (he got it at 3) but all of his friends who had Tonie boxes have now upgraded to a yoto. The Tonie figures are indeed enticing but longevity wise the yoto is far superior.

Whilst he may still have enjoyed it at 6 if he already had a Tonie it's a lot to spend on something he will likely not be using in a few months once the novelty of the figures has worn off. I'd definitely opt for yoto, maybe show him some adverts of it beforehand so he knows there are other options.

CloseEncountersOfTheTurdKind · 17/11/2025 07:45

My nearly nine year old had had her tonie box for years and still listens to it every day. There are more and more books for older kids coming out- I've got her some David Walliams tonies for Christmas

SweetBaklava · 17/11/2025 07:54

My 8 year old niece still uses her tonie daily!

StaySpicy · 17/11/2025 07:54

My 6yo loves his Toniebox. He particularly likes the Joke of the Day, which updates with a new episode every day! He also loves the audiobooks, including the Christmasaurus and Enid Blyton. He's got some good non-fiction, too, like space and dinosaurs.

Every now and then he'll listen to one of his others, like the Blippi one or the Thomas the Tank Engine one 😆

apintofwine · 17/11/2025 10:01

@BraOffPjsOn we have a Yoto for a 6 and 3 year old and it’s used every single day. We have a massed a good number of cards now and can’t imagine having to keep track of all those figures!

Sympathise that you don’t want him disappointed on Christmas Day though so why not sit down with him and research together why Yoto would be better (maybe a little bit of light prep beforehand to think of favourite stories that are only available on Yoto) and then he’ll realise Yoto is a better choice to ask Father Christmas for…

BeaLola · 17/11/2025 11:00

I have no idea about either of these as my DS is 17

However having read the thread it seems like both would work for his age .

My q would be died he only know about the Toni due to advertising/ friends have obe etc

If possible could you take him somewhere where there are both and he could see them demonstrated and he gets to see the range - then he puts what he would like in his Christmas list and you buy that one - I wish my 17 year old was hankering after something that would make his eyes light up when it appears on Christmas Day
