Second hand presents for DS

Does anyone do this? I’m going on maternity leave soon so trying to save, my DS is 18 months old and has loads of second hand toys. I doubt he would even notice if I got some second hand toys/books. For example there’s a series of books he loves, I’ve seen a bundle on Vinted for a fiver and the same would cost £25+ on amazon. But I still feel weird about giving them for Christmas. Is this ok?!

It’s fine. Go for it.

Cat1504 · 11/11/2025 21:15

It’s fine ….really fine

AlexisP90 · 11/11/2025 21:16

Of course its okay. DS is lucky to have a family and a loving home. Presents and gifts are a bonus.

Second hand, third hand its all of course absolutely okay. Hes also at the age he really wont care.

Youre doing great and im sure he will have a magical Christmas with or without brand new gifts

Lju · 11/11/2025 21:16

Of course it's okay! Your family, you set the norms. My eldest is 7 and we still have no more than a handful of new toys and clothes. We set things up under the tree so they're instantly ready to play with rather than having to be unpacked from a box and then the plastic inside the box and finding batteries if needed and all that stuff. Its worked well for us so far! Will be sticking with second hand as long as possible.

MayaPinion · 11/11/2025 21:18

He’s 18 months. He’s not even going to understand it’s Christmas 😁

RosesAndHellebores · 11/11/2025 21:21

Of course it's fine. At 18 months mine thought an empty tonic bottle with rice in was awesome.

Honoluli · 11/11/2025 21:23

Yes it’s fine, we’ve always done it and continue to do so as well as handing down or selling the things they grow out of. The best present you can give them is protecting the planet for their future.

AlexisP90 · 11/11/2025 21:23

In my area they have baby pages. Ones called hand me down (my area) for baby stuff.

People give away so much on them. Half of it barely used because they grow out of stuff so fast.

Worth having a look. When we moved in October I gave so much away - mostly toys. A lot of people collecting it said it was for Christmas and honestly that made my absolute day. My sons old toys going to a new home to make another child happy!

Pinkstuffs · 11/11/2025 21:28

I think because we’re not really struggling for money I feel more guilty about not buying new! Also because I know he will be spoilt with new things from his grandparents.

Definitely do it.

Many of my teens Xmas gifts will be from Vinted.

As well as saving £ its much better for the environment to re-use something rather than create a whole new one.

No Brainer. Do it, and then put it on vinted again when out grown

clary · 11/11/2025 21:31

Yes go for it. I just bought my ds (in his 20s) a LEGO set (architecture type one) that is £109 new for £78 on eBay, all bagged up with instructions so it will be fine. Saving me £30! Your DS really won't mind or even know.

Greentrianglesaremine · 11/11/2025 21:34

It’s fine OP.

Socktree · 11/11/2025 21:46

DD is a teen and I still continue to buy her second hand gifts for Christmas/birthdays where it makes sense. She knows and doesn't care - Second hand books, musical instruments, laptops, phones, branded clothing, jewellery, whatever merch she's into that year...
I think it sets a good example of using money wisely. It's also better for the environment

mamagogo1 · 11/11/2025 21:48

Of course, for her first Christmas, nearly all of DD’s presents were hand me downs, we had no money

Do it. You set what's normal.

My DD4 has always had a mix of secondhand and new and doesn't t bat an eyelid!

fwiw it's not a finance thing for us, it's an avoiding adding to the supply and demand/over consumption/environmental issue. It's not just for the kids either, we always spend an amount of time looking for second hand options before we consider buying something new. Just standard practice in our house.

I’ve been buying my 18mo daughter some great second hand stuff for Xmas! Shes got a lovely wooden Hey Duggee train set and some decent duplo, all of which was a total bargain. The way I look at it, in a few years time she’ll want expensive presents so I’m making the most of it now!

Derbee · 12/11/2025 17:39

I’ve always preferred my DS to have more, better quality presents that are secondhand.

ScaryM0nster · 12/11/2025 17:39

Do it!!!!!!!

Its so much better for the planet, before you even get into the budget side of things.

Advertising has driven Christmas to be materialistic and wasteful. Be the better person and make sensible choices. If you feel more comfortable, put the difference into a savings account for them for the future.

JasmineTea11 · 12/11/2025 17:41

Nearly all the gifts we exchange are 2nd hand! I know we're unusual but I couldn't be any other way. We're not skint at all, but i hate waste and pointless consumption.
