Boxing Day ideas

Please share your best Boxing Day ideas. Primary aged DC.

I remember bubble and squeak, Roses Chocolates, a muddy dog walk, monopoly and a pile newspapers. It always felt a bit of a boring day that dragged on a bit.

Any great traditions I can appropriate?!

I loved and love Boxing Day! Time to play with / put away with prezzies!

left overs for lunch
buffet of bits from marks from dinner

long dog walk.
tradition of a horror film in the evening

Games mainly ! But really old school ones. I seem to remember one which involved putting on lots of clothes and chopping up chocolate - yes I realise this sounds bizarre. Twister, Chinese Whispers, Cluedo, . Or how about Karaoke? Buffet meal of all the leftovers, big walk, film, or even a trip to The Panto

I usually have to work but I’m off this year 🥳🥳

5yo DC here. We’re having a day of toys/games (I’ll probably buy a couple of new board games for Christmas), family walk at the beach (we live a 5 min walk from the sea), sandwiches with leftovers for lunch, m&s buffet food for tea then DH leaves that night for his 2 weeks at work so DC and I will cuddle up with a movie in the evening ☺️

Im looking forward to just having a day of not having anywhere to be ☺️

We have turkey sandwiches, get an extra target joint so we have plenty. Nice bread or rolls, mango chutney and mayo is traditional.

We have hot chocolate and biscuits. Pistachio and almond from M&S are our favourite.

We usually play a game and watch some music. Last year it was Superbowl half time shows.

Cheese fondue, board games, films and a long walk

Last year we went to the cinema for the first time on Boxing Day, rather than staying in. We all really enjoyed it and hoping to make it a regular boxing day thing 🙂

We went to the zoo last year. It was really quiet and a nice day. My husband who isn’t big on traditions and being sentimental said after it that that should be our Boxing Day tradition. So we’re planning on going again this year.

We host both sets of grandparents each year and I insist that we do something on Boxing Day. When the DC were little,
we used to do the panto. Now they’re older, we go to the races. Although we might mix it up a bit and go to a rugby match instead this year.

Dog walk. Food. Film. More food.

Bubble and squeak for breakfast. Walk dogs to the pub and watch the Morris dancers. We always have ham egg and chips, and then cheese.

My family all have dogs, so Boxing Day is a great excuse for us all to get together for 'fresh air' (and not at all because a bunch of dogs who haven't been out much the day before and have eaten left over sprouts are not something you want to be shut in a house with). We have a lovely long walk and then back to hoover up all the leftovers and have a proper look at presents that weren't properly investigated the day before.

Someone will usually break out a jigsaw.

Boxing day became an overcatered buffet. Once my in-laws stopped coming for Christmas day, because the "old folks" who tended to be younger than them, needed someone to cook Christmas dinner for them. They'd come over on boxing day. We tried to do something like lasagne or a casserole but my FiL would always tell us to just do cold cuts. This would mean a side of salmon, prawns, assorted cold meats from the deli. Salad, mushrooms, turkey, crisps, savoury nibbles, breadsticks. Plus my MiL would bring soup and a couple of desserts.

My kids still remember how much food there was. If I suggested we do less I would be overruled by DH who has inherited his mother's tendency to do too much.

I love boxing day! For us, all the stressful obligations are over and we can just enjoy our little family!

We eat leftovers, pudding and cheese. No real meals. The dc get up when they want and stay in pjs if they want. We usually still have a few presses left under the tree to open (we've never rushed through opening things) and we will play board games and build lego and watch TV.

You can plan a quiz type game where everyone answers questions about Christmas and gets points for correct answers, then gets a prize based on the total number of points. Make it in the form of a Christmas themed slideshow and there are so many examples of trivia you can take inspiration from:
https://parade.com/943457/parade/christmas-trivia/
https://www.vam.ac.uk/mused/random/christmas-quiz-how-much-do-you-know-about-christmas/
You don't have to go big with the prizes, just get some chocolate coins or stickers, etc.
