Family board games

I want to get a board game for the family. So two kids aged 7&10 and adults. Really want something my 7 year old can play but isn’t so dull I want to poke my eyes out! We enjoy settlers, spice road, citadels etc as adults but these seem too ambitious for my 7 year old. Any ideas for something fun and fast paced.

Try Speldor - it's really straight forward but addictive. However, we started our daughter on Catan when she was 7 and with a bit of help every now and then it was fine.

Minecraft builders and biomes is fun for all ages, grandson has been playing this since he was about 8. Heckmeck is great, too.

LilacPony · 08/11/2025 19:34

Following with interest!

Outsmarted. Great online quiz game that allows kids and adults to answer questions at their own level. We love it.

I run a board game group and I've played literally 100's, so have a few recs for you 😁

Carcassonne- it's a classic! The base rules are very simple (and the expansions aren't especially complicated), but as an adult you can play it as cut throat and strategic, but it's simple enough for kids to play
Hey! That's my Fish- very easy to learn, child friendly theme, but surprisingly strategic
Rhino Hero- dexterity game
Ticket to Ride is fun for all ages, and simple to learn. It's a fantastic beginner family game
Sushi Party Go- cute art, easy to learn (it's a card drafting game)
Tsuro- very simple but fun for adults
Camel Up- you bet on camel racing
Quirkle
Dixit is good for encouraging creativity and is picture based
Forgotten island- a co-op game
King of Tokyo
Nekojima- dexterity game where you have cats from string. It's surprisingly hard and tbh will probably be an advantage to have small hands 😁

Agreed that Splendor is lots of fun. Catan is pretty straight forward. Banagrams (basically speed Scrabble with no board) is fun if your kid likes that kind of thing.

Magic Maze is quite fun- it's a non-verbal communication game and is co-op.

Machi Koro.

Kabuto Sumo- a fun game where you are beetles with different powers trying to push your opponents off a board.

For something that can be a bit more complex and that I think would appeal to everyone, Heat Pedal to the Metal is great.

Splendor works well for my 6/7 year old and I love it too. Harmonies and Azul are also similar but a slight step up in complexity.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/11/2025 20:55

Junior labyrinth is good at that age

FenceBooksCycle · 08/11/2025 21:04

Agree with pp on Splendor.
Carcassonne is also very accessible for a younger child
Labyrinth

There is a kids version of Catan if you don't think your 7yo is up to it but I think many 7yos could cope with it.

butimamonstersaidthemonster · 08/11/2025 22:29

Thanks for all the suggestions. We have labyrinth but I’m not a fan. I’m also not super keen on carcasone. I will have a look at splendor.

Happy salmon and exploding kittens are hits at our house

CypressGrove · 08/11/2025 22:33

At 7, ticket to ride, sequence, king dominos and forbidden Islands were big hits.

Zitouna · 08/11/2025 22:55

I’ve got a 7 and 5 year old - our top family games are

  • ticket to ride
  • azul (which I thought would be too hard but the littlest one is really into it)
  • lost cities
  • catan (too much for the 5 year old but tje 7 year old loves it)
  • sleeping queens
  • left right centre dice game

there is a kids version of ticket to ride which we played first, but they picked up the grown up one pretty quickly.

mathanxiety · 08/11/2025 23:04

Blokus is fun. You could play with the 7yo if the strategising is difficult.

Dixit
Ticket to Ride
Sushi Go Party
Takenoko

slipperypenguin · 09/11/2025 00:07

Monopoly junior was good in ours for 7 and 10 year old DC

butimamonstersaidthemonster · 09/11/2025 08:14

having had a Quick Look I like splendor and Azul. Just want to check that they are games where you play your own game not ones where you can sabotage someone else? Thanks.

OP posts:
FineSallyFineSally · 09/11/2025 08:17

Only in as much as Catan is. You can sabotage someone else's game by getting a card they also might be saving for, but you don't actively play against them. Same with Azul.

Can I be really cheeky and ask a follow up question? We love Ticket to Ride but rarely have the time to commit to a full game.

Do any of these fabulous recommendations fit into more like a 30 minute window???

Cheguevarahamster · 09/11/2025 08:43

Castle panic is a great co-op game which is fun to play and easy to pick up. I echo other posters with ticket to ride.

There is a ‘family’ version of Cards Against Humanity’ which has the risqué cards removed. That is popular here

CeffylCoch · 09/11/2025 10:46

Topple is brilliant, we got it last year. I’ll see if can find link
