One present for a whole household?!!!

A relative has decided that we should buy one present per household. This is stressing me out no end! They have children aged 3, 6 and 10 and the mum and dad. Does anyone have any idea of a family game or something else that would work please?

Thanks everyone, some really good ideas! To add to the requirements, (sorry for the drip feed!), they live abroad and are visiting for Christmas and have already made comments about getting everything in the car to get here! So vouchers won't work but I really like the popcorn or waffle maker idea but will need to work out if they have one.

It is entirely infuriating but I've learnt to go with the flow with this particular relative! It was sold as easier because it's one present but it really isn't easier for anyone buying for them. I have two teenagers so much less of a challenge for them to buy for us!

What’s so infuriating about this? They’re visiting from abroad, it’s going to be a pain for a large amount of gifts to be manually taken back home, they might not have the luggage space etc.

If it’s really bothering you, it would be easier if you ordered gifts to be delivered to their home country/address with the caveat they won’t open the gifts on Christmas day

as for one gift for the entire household, just get a board game

How about a make-it-yourself gingerbread house? Brilliant for those ages and something nice that they can do together…

No5ChalksRoad · 08/11/2025 16:19

Agree with a popcorn maker. It’s healthy and fun.

A cinema visit voucher ?

2catsandhappy · 08/11/2025 16:31

Oh dear, this reminded me of my first Xmas as a married woman with stepdc.
I was used to individual gifts, good bad or indifferent.
That xmas it was, a box of biscuits 'to the family', box of chocolates ditto, and the only gift I got for me was a 'How to cook' type book by Michael Barry(Food and Drink tv series)
What an eye opener that year was.
Get any little ones something they can unwrap themselves.

We would love this sort of gift in our house - something like a board game. UNO extreme is a good bet for those children’s age (youngest can be on mum or dad’s team).

Put the game in a nice basket with some treats, in my experience kids love treats/snacks from other cultures/countries. Mine love America, Korean, Japanese snacks. There is a store called Kenji that stocks lots of Japanese snacks 3 for £5.

"I think I'll have to ask but don't know how to put it!"

A simple, what sort of budget are we thinking? would suffice.

A gift tower? @sunnysaturdaymorn

A friend suggested this to us many years ago....total nightmare....never the same again and no contact for a number of years now sadly...🙁. Totally changed the dynamic of the what I felt was a friendship...x

This seems a bit of an over reaction

I’d make up a hamper of M&S treats (budget permitting). This could include a little toy for each child plus sweet treats for each person, booze for adults if appropriate etc.

NoSnakesHere · 09/11/2025 12:22

What a great idea! Twister or giant connect 4? Or a day out somewhere? Depends on your budget but there’s loads of things you could get them

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 09/11/2025 12:25

A plant for each bedroom. Silly stick on eyes for the children’s pots. Something to nurture and will look nice. 🌱

HMW19061 · 09/11/2025 12:26

Depends on the budget.
Tickets for a day out somewhere would be good or the cinema. My BIL buys us those Red Letter Day box days out… last year he got us 3 different cheaper options for days out but we ended up combining them on the website for one bigger day out instead due to time constraints.

A cinema voucher with some snacks and drinks is a great gift

AxolotlEars · 09/11/2025 12:30

Surely there are cinemas where they live!

Specialagentblond · 09/11/2025 12:39

I’ve done hampers in the past - cinema with tickets, popcorn etc. hot chocolate one with a dupe velvet user and all the goodies - mugs, hot chocolate, sprinkles etc. we even did a fancy stationery one for a family of accountants and students. You can get a jigsaw of a family picture, a piece of art or a nice photograph in a nice frame.

MatronPomfrey · 09/11/2025 12:39

I have done this with nieces/ nephews in the past. Either a family board game or a game for their switch. Add a tub of sweets. Younger children will grow into it.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 09/11/2025 12:51

My kids (4 and 8) love UNO, Dobble, Labyrinth, Thinkwords, frustration, monopoly. Things like UNO and Dobble are great for sliding into a bag to taking out when we go for a meal etc. We have several different versions of each (mario, Minecraft etc). The little one often teams up with one of us and sometimes the older one does too so everyone can get involved.

I’d buy a family game that is suitable for the older children, and then buy all the children some chocolate or something.

I often do exactly this for my brother's family while I await the inevitable arrival of yet another bloody scarf chosen by my sister-in-law. Last year's was identical to the one from the previous year (perhaps it was "buy one, get one free"?).
