Christmas Eve Afternoon Alone

Shambles123 · 08/11/2025 07:59

So, I will have approx 5 hours of Xmas Eve alone as DH taking kids and ILs into London for an activity. I can't go as will be working till about lunchtime Xmas Eve and there are two dogs to consider. After work and dog walk I will have 5 hours alone Xmas Eve.

Am wondering what I can do, has anyone done this before and have any good ideas? Am assuming lots of places not open and my friends are likely to be with their families!

It’s a Wonderful Life. That is all.

Laura36TTC · 08/11/2025 12:02

That sounds amazing. I’d probably take myself for a coffee and sit in the car as the shops will be busy and enjoy it while reading my kindle.
Then I’d go home and sit on the couch and watch some Netflix in peace… absolute bliss! Xx

herbalteabag · 08/11/2025 12:05

I'd be enjoying peace at home, wrapping, and something on TV or some music. Sounds like bliss to me!

Dogs would be ok post walk to be alone for a bit!

Do you have a single friend or 2 who would appreciate a few hours out in the afternoon for a festive drink in town?

Itsnaptime · 08/11/2025 12:07

Also alone Xmas eve..... I'm planning pouring a glass of wine, run a nice bubble bath and read my book in there
Then I'm gonna curl up with my blanket, snacks and watch some crappy Xmas movie. Enjoy the day before the mania that's about to hit

Retrogamer · 08/11/2025 12:08

Sounds lovely.
I personally would bake something delicious, do a quick tidy of the house. Then sit and watch something festive with some mulled wine. ..or even get round to starting that book I was gifted last christmas

has anyone done this before?

Please have my prize for the absolute strangest query of the year!

MN really is excellent at highlighting how different everyone’s lives are.

(I’m sure you’ll have a splendid five hours, @Shambles123.)

No, I have never spent 5 hours on xmas eve alone! Is that so weird?

Xmas Day is going to be sitting around drinking and eating though (post cooking). I want to get away from the laundry!

Sounds like my idea of heaven 😂
id get all the veggies parboiled and ready to go, then sit down with a bowl of snacks & a glass of wine and watch Xmas films.

barskits · 08/11/2025 12:21

Our local church has a Christingle service on Christmas Eve afternoon. We're not religious but we often go to that, it is lovely.

And you get to take away an orange studded with sweets and a candle in the top!

caringcarer · 08/11/2025 12:25

Take the time for yourself OP. Walk the dog, open some good wine and nice nibbles, find a Xmas movie, read a book, listen to music, have a long bath or just take a nap. They will all be bath in no time at all.

Netcurtainnelly · 08/11/2025 12:29

5 hours is that all, just relax.

CheeseWisely · 08/11/2025 12:30

I’d imagine most stuff would be open Christmas Eve, it is just a normal working day for many. Depending how involved I had to be with the kids once they’re home I might have a couple of glasses of wine while I read a good book (maybe in a cosy pub) or watch a film (maybe at the cinema).

Oh my god how awful for you.
This has got to be a joke.

How lovely! Nine Lessons and Carols on the radio, a lovely cup of tea or hot chocolate, some unhurried present wrapping, and a good book.

mamagogo1 · 08/11/2025 12:37

I’d walk dogs somewhere with a dog friends cafe, come home, do a spot of prep to make life easier for later (eg if you are cooking Christmas Eve I’d choose something i could make early afternoon that just needs baking in the evening like a lasagna, clear everything up then open the wine)

MossAndLeaves · 08/11/2025 12:39

Pick out a nice book, have a bath and do your nails/a face mask/pamper time. Then prep anything needed for the next day.

5 hours alone, FFS? Lucky you, I say

5 free hours to yourself sounds amazing. There's no way that I would struggle to fill that time. Favourite film, nice food and drink, long bath and a good book. 5 hours really isnt a long stretch of time.

Text your best mate and ask her if she would like to sneak out to the pub for a glass of the nicest champagne that you can afford!

This! It’s the little luxuries that make the difference with some impromptu free time 🥂

I hadn't spent more than maybe an hour or two alone on Christmas Eve until I was 37, after a relationship breakup. That first one definitely did feel like a bit of a puzzle as to what to do with myself!

Hollyhobbi · 08/11/2025 12:52

I would have loved that when my dds were younger!
