I’ve looked through all the Christmas threads and now have loads of great ideas for DC, friends, nieces and nephews, but I’m struggling with my parents. They’re in their late 70’s, reasonably good health, like gardening, but no other real interests or hobbies. They tend to buy any clothes or household items they need. Mum is allergic to most skincare or beauty products so that’s out. Any suggestions welcome!

I am getting a belt pedometer for my dad (80) it has better features and is more accurate than his phone pedometer. I'll get him a few other bits (he's been known to decimate a chocolate library in minutes).

For mum (70) I'm getting Celtic and Co slippers, and Jo Malone body lotion.

Photo frame
Diary (if they don't use their phones)
Scarf
Slippers
Meal out voucher, or afternoon tea somewhere nice
Coffee machine, velvetiser

I'm stuck too, I got them a mixed case of wine one year from naked wines which went down well. I used their £75 new customer discount otherwise it would have been out of my price range!

Hori hori garden knife was a big hit with my gardening parents.

The conversation with my DH is that he will sort out his parents gift this year.

So, when he comes to me panicking on Christmas Eve we'll get them Emmerdale tour tickets

How to be a curry legend spicery kit. That’s as far as I’ve got . Bought one for my Dad a couple of years ago and he loved it . Will give it jointly to inlaws as unsure which one would like it most .

Crimsonbow · 08/11/2025 07:57

Tastesmiths kits (they loved these last year) and a jigsaw mat so far

I’m getting older and I prefer an experience to a physical gift.

MIL is having the new velvetiser and one of the crescent shape hand bags which are around at the moment. I might also get her some earrings.
For my parents, I’ll renew their Readly subscription (about year 6 of that), want to try and persuade my mum to get some trainers for casual wear as I think she’ll be surprised at just how comfortable they are. I’m getting my dad a hand held chain saw thing. For the past few years, I have got him various items that make life in the garden easier and he’s gone “I’m not sure why I’d need that” and then converted to using them all of the time. Three years ago was a lightweight step ladder, two years ago was long handled leaf grabbers and the year before was a sack truck thing. He’s still very fit & active but the risk of injury must be increasing so it’s getting things which enable him to do what he enjoys (and “needs” to do) whilst hopefully reducing that risk.

Have you discounted food items? Maybe things they wouldn’t think about themselves, or a more expensive version than they might buy.
Small pannetonne; small Christmas cake slab; Stollen bites; good jam/conserve etc etc.

What about a game they could play together g Othello.

A filled planter for their garden.

Have a snoop and see if anything looks like it needs replacing or could be upgraded (dressing gown; slippers; bath towels)

Microwavable hot water bottle.

Do they have an electric steamer? Bought one for my DPs when I started to worry about them carrying pans of boiling water to drain their veg.

Cushioned lap trays

Nothing. We only do gifts for children

Bought 90yo dad a photo book which arrived on Monday. I did a photo montage on a big TV for his birthday party which he loved, so it's lots of those plus a couple of meaningful photos since, like DD1's PhD graduation.

He never asks for anything and hates the idea of wasting money, but I am confident he'll like this.
