My Dd would love some make up for Christmas. I don’t wear make up really so have no idea what brand to get and what to pick up.
I was thinking some lip tint, mascara and some eyeshadow?

what would make a lovely starter set/ basics and what brands should I look at?

A good starter set is the Boots X e.l.f beauty icons set.

At her age, go for P Louise, Nyx Cosmetics and maybe some NARS for foundation/primer etc.

Not all makeup is considered trendy and cool at her age. The brands above would all be fine.

P Louise for eyeshadow, Nyx for lip and cheeks and NARS for face in general.

Can't go wrong with a Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk set.

Elf is very popular with teens and very reasonably priced for when they’re starting to experiment.

Roserunner · 07/11/2025 13:10

My 15 year old likes elf and Charlotte Tilbury. I wouldn't get her pLouise as I think this is more aimed at tweens. She would love a Sephora voucher to choose her own. She does buy cheaper basics from super drug and Primark.

Dd15 wouldn’t thank me for Plouise. She likes elf and maybelline for basics. Charlotte tilbury, Nars, Fenty, Kylie cosmetics and Dior for special birthday Christmas treats. Kiko Milano also seems to be popular too

foodtoorder · 07/11/2025 17:55

Go for some basic elf products like a mascara or a clear lip gloss then maybe a voucher so she can go in and choose her own?

pippapipps · 08/11/2025 00:06

My 16 year old daughter likes Charlotte tilbury bronzer, revolution and benefit

MAC makeup is definitely treat-level but is not as expensive as the likes of Tilbury, Dior, etc. I think MAC is great value for money, and the staff are all makeup artists. They do makeup lessons with a face chart showing what they used and how they apply it. It's free if you buy a product or two. Maybe you could take DD into MAC, if there is one near you, and do that as a Christmas treat? Then you know that she'd getting things that suit her, and she'd get a little makeup lesson on how to apply it, too. You could do it shortly before Christmas and then she could receive the stuff on Christmas Day. And you could tell the staff, when booking the appt, that it's for a 15-year-old and you'd like to stick to a fresh, natural look.

My DD at that age would have had specific brands and products in mind so I think you’ll need to take her shopping. Is there a Sephora near you?

zaxxon · 08/11/2025 07:29

Mac is pretty high-end for a teen! I wouldn't spend that much on products she'll probably change her mind about in a few months.

At that age, makeup is all about experimenting and having fun, so I'd let her choose herself, with a Boots or Superdrug voucher.

It is, but I'm constantly amazed at how many teens have these brands! When I was 15, it was all Avon and Rimmel. I wasn't even aware of brands like Clarins and Estee Lauder at that age! (Things like Tilbury weren't around then.)

Yes times have changed haven't they! I was astonished when DD told me about "Sephora kids" - 11 and 12 year olds hanging out there and buying skincare and makeup, when loads of it is £20-£30 a pop.

Sadly not. It’s miles away.
