If you have been to a Christmas market, how much did you spend?

I don’t mean transport and accommodation, I mean actually at the markets on purchases from the stalls (inc food). Just wondering approx what the prices are like. It would be helpful to know where you went and how many nights it was.
thanks

Uk or overses?
Generally everything is far more expensive thn it should be
I have been to them in many places (Uk and EU) and have a nice time but rarely buy much at the stalls, its about atmosphere not shopping for me

cottonwoolie · 01/11/2025 14:05

Went to one in Winchester & spent nothing, it was all generic rubbish.

Abroad can easily do 100 euros

Goosyloosy · 01/11/2025 14:13

I’ve only ever been to UK Christmas markets and have seen pretty much the same over priced tat in them all. The food stalls always smell inviting on a cold day but going with 4 grandchildren was very expensive by the time they all chose something to eat. Food was ok but way over priced. The kids love the buzz of a Christmas market but I feel my inner grinch coming on just thinking about it now 😆

Copenhagen Christmas markets bought beautiful unusual decorations £8-10 each. Drank mulled wine £4-5 a glass. Absolutely magical - this was last year!

blackwhitepink · 01/11/2025 14:36

Nothing because they are all shite. Overpriced crap that nobody really wants.

Countmeout · 01/11/2025 14:48

Prague. The food to eat in the market was probably similar to here. Kings marzipan was an arm and a leg.

amazing poke of chips at shop (not actual market) in Wenceslas Square £4
I bought decorated biscuits to bring home - lots of price points from £1.50 ish.
lovely decorations - 7-10. I have too many so only bought glass t light holder at the castle think that was cheaper there. Well no dearer.
Silver sprayed mistletoe 2.50 - not at main markets.

I took £200 ( own spending) in Kroner and used card for other places e. g eating/enterance fees. We don’t drink.
It was fabulous. So Christmassy. We did the Christmas tram, museums. Little train. Castle. Lamplighter on Charles Bridge. Couple of smaller markets north(?) well up from Wenceslas Square where I got the mistletoe.

UK markets, do t normally buy anything as it’s o repriced mass produced tat.
in Budapest last year the food was great, we bought small decorations, natural wreaths and lovely wee glass things!! Didn’t spend very much as it was all pretty reasonably priced and the atmosphere was great!

At the market themselves? Depends where it is but in Oslo I spent £300 over the course of one evening on activities (ice rink, giant wheel, general merry games) with food and beverage (family of 3). At Winter Wonderland I’ve spent about the same and had a piss poor experience. Hate Winter Wonderland.

I was in Budapest last year and we walked through several Christmas markets. We bought mulled wine and a plate of potatoes/sausage/onions/paprika. They only took card at the markets and they are on the florint, not euro. I 'think' the mulled wine was about £2 each and the food about £5. We had much better meals in small cafes.

The Christmas stalls also sold sweets, nuts, smoked salmon, hats/gloves, wooden toys/nutcrackers, baubles and the same stall at every market selling wreaths and decorations made from dried citrus fruit and cinnamon sticks.

I went to Edinburgh market a couple of years ago for the last time. Might as well have bought a cheap German sausage from Lidl, burners the other £90 odd £ and stayed warm and uncrowded in my house 😆

@LondonPapa£300 in one evening!
It seems that Budapest is very reasonable, so very tempted but we’ve been there already so still unsure. Thanks for all the comments.

We go to York every year for the atmosphere... don't buy anything from the over priced stalls.. but plenty of other shops in York.
Don't stay over it's an hours drive.
Have a pub lunch.

LadyGreyandlemoncurd · 02/11/2025 11:22

Vienna is lovely- it’s such a gorgeous city to walk around and there are loads of markets dotted about.
We actually didn’t spend loads at the markets themselves- a few mugs of mulled wine, a few snacks and 1 or 2 decorations as souvenirs (probably about 100euro over 3 days). Like someone else said, it was mostly about the atmosphere rather than the shopping- you could easily spend a lot more or almost nothing at all!
I’ve also really enjoyed Budapest (which is cheaper in general) and Salzburg (which is a similar price to Vienna, but has the option to get a train up to the mountains to find snow!)

We mostly ate at restaurants around the city rather than the markets.

pinkksugarmouse · 02/11/2025 14:04

The only one I have ever attended is one just a 30-40 minute train ride away in Birmingham. Its about £8.50 per adult for a return. Its a German market.

Its fun to enjoy the atmosphere except at its busiest but I don't buy anything because it's overpriced. There are some nice things but the same can be bought on sites like etsy and are cheaper.

I just have a look as I'm going to the city anyway. Usually to shop with my adult DD as she lives in Birmingham.

I love them but they’re expensive. Last year we were waiting to go to the theatre & there was a Christmas market across the road. My daughter wanted hot chocolate, it was just a cardboard cup of cadburys instant hot chocolate that you added water to & it was £5.She also wanted some churros & it was £7.50 for 4 sticks with Nutella.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 02/11/2025 14:20

Edinburgh, Cadbury hot chocolate £5, hot doughnuts £6, smelly decoration thing £10, terrifying 150ft swing thing £10.
You can spend as much or little as you please

pizzaHeart · 02/11/2025 14:32

UK.
£10 for some sweet treats . Then had coffee and cake in a cafe not at the market as wanted to sit inside.
I don’t drink and don’t buy a lot of decorative stuff so probably wrong type for the market 😀

It was quite expensive for what it was. I’d do it again though.

I quite fancied going on a river cruise visiting various Christmas markets. Reading this thread I’m really glad we did ‘Cultural Cities of the Rhine’ instead.

I find Budapest very reasonable for eating out and just love the festive feeling in December. Have you been at christmas time before?
For me the hi-light is always riding on the christmas tram. I will go again next year for the third time, but don't spend much at the markets tbh.

notacooldad · 03/11/2025 11:48

Went to Manchester the year before last after not going for a few years. I didnt spend a penny. There was too many queues. I went away from the markets and found a nice bar and spent the evening there!
