Every year we go to my parents for Christmas dinner, but I suggested for this year to take a little bit of the load off them, we all bring something with us. So, I'm just interested in what everyone else has (totally not trying to get ideas 😉).

Bonus points for dessert ideas!

My xmas dinner probably be pie and crisps or i may splash and go with a noddle.

dottiedodah · 27/10/2025 12:54

Well I m a sucker for good old fashioned Trifle ,served in my Nans green 1960s glass trifle bowl.Raspberries.custard ,lashings of sherry(had chemo last year and didnt want to drink. In remission so hitting the booze at Christmas!) No jelly but bananas and lots of cream .Topped with a flake and glace cherries.Turkey and smoked salmon for snack with a sherry !(Harveys Bristol Cream of course)in true nod to Nan!

Carpedimum · 27/10/2025 12:55

We have given up on starters to concentrate on the main event.
Roast meat (we vary it, sometimes more than one on the plate)
roast potatoes
roast parsnips
carrot & swede mash
cauliflower cheese
sprouts done fancy (not just boiled)
other green veg
red cabbage
pigs in blankets
stuffings (different types)
Yorkshire pudding
Rich gravy
cranberry sauce
Apple sauce
horseradish sauce

Much later… Christmas pudding or something from M&S.
mmmmmmmmmm! 😋

Carpedimum · 27/10/2025 12:57

Omg! I forgot Bread Sauce - it’s my favourite bit!

EllaPaella · 27/10/2025 13:00

We do M&S every year.
Turkey Crown
Red cabbage
cauliflower cheese
Roast carrots and parsnips
Roast potatoes
Pigs in blankets
Brussels with pancetta and walnuts
Yorkshire puddings
Gravy
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce

Not doing Christmas pudding this year as DH and DC aren’t fans and we don’t have any visitors this year so we’re getting the M&S chocolate pine cones.

Can’t wait 😁😋

Zippedydodah · 27/10/2025 13:01

I hate turkey and after years of cooking a traditional Christmas dinner I stopped three years ago.
This year it’s porchetta, French fries and apple/celery/white cabbage slaw, followed by panna cotta with raspberry couli.

RessicaJabbit · 27/10/2025 13:05

Turkey and roast beef
Chipolatas (instead of pigs)
All the roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Sweet potato and celeriac mash
Savoy cabbage (instead of sprouts)
Carrots
Peas for my daughter
Yorkshire pudding
Bread sauce
Gravy

Dessert at some point later on;
Pavlova
Yule log
Trifle
Sticky toffee pudding and custard

LJ125 · 27/10/2025 13:13

Turkey crown
Beef joint
Veggie wellington for veggies
Pigs in blankets and veggie equivalent
Stuffing - meat and veggie

Roast potatoes
Mash potato
Dauphinois (we love potatoes 😂)
Cauliflower cheese
Roasted carrots and paranips
Carrot and swede mash
Green veg- usually peas/broccoli
Purple cabbage
Plain brussel spouts
Fancy brussels eg gratin

Puds change each year but good options are Baileys cheesecake or any of the Jane’s Patisserie cheesecake recipes, chocolate truffle, pavlova or fruit crumble.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 27/10/2025 13:13

Honey roast carrots

Yorkshire puddings if I can be bothered

We don’t have pudding but I make trifle for boxing day

TattooStan · 27/10/2025 13:24

If there's just 2 of us, we do a chicken, or leg of lamb.
But always roast potatoes in goose fat, roast parsnips, mash with cream and butter (we need it for the bubble n squeak the next day), prunes and chipolatas wrapped in bacon, brussels cooked with bacon and chestnuts, bread sauce (my favourite bit of the meal!), gravy.

MrsF111 · 27/10/2025 13:24

pate or soup as a starter

Roast Turkey
Ham
Pigs in blankets
Roast Potatoes
Stuffing
yorkshire puddings
parsnips
carrots
cheesey leeks
braised cabbage
greens

trifle

ItsAllGoneQuietOverThere · 27/10/2025 14:00

Turkey crown (but there is a debate about swapping it for beef rib for a change..)
Roasties
Carrot & swede mash, and mash (DPs choice🙄)
Parsnips
Peas, chantenay carrots
yorkshire puds
Pigs in blankets & sage + onion stuffing
Gravy

Dessert is Christmas pud… only the individual ones, as only I really like it.
There is other stuff in the fridge if wanted. Trifle, Tiramisu etc.

ItsAllGoneQuietOverThere · 27/10/2025 14:02

Oops - forgot the sprouts.. I don’t really like them, but DP does.

I wish he didn’t, the smell seems to “linger”…

ridl14 · 27/10/2025 14:16

Love this thread! Mine has varied and I've not hosted one yet.

My current one at in laws' will be: jollof rice, plantain, fish in tomato sauce, salad and nice sides, things like breaded king prawns, samosas (especially as some of the family is vegan)! Dessert probably something like apple crumble and ice cream

My mum used to make:

  • some kind of beef in red wine with carrots and other vegetables (I'm pescatarian so didn't have it)
  • aubergine parmigiana as we used to call it, I know the Italian is melanzane. Everyone would have some and it was my main
  • roast potatoes, no goose fat but parboiled then roasted with garlic and rosemary and salt, delicious
  • roasted carrots and in later years, some parsnip
  • Brussels sprouts, my fussy brother weirdly loved them! One year we did tempura sprouts, actually really nice!
  • sage and onion stuffing on the side and gravy

That would be a big late lunch (no breakfast just chocolate coins) then we'd go to my grandparents' in the evening and eat Indian food!

Bluejaysforthewin · 27/10/2025 14:18

Haven't decided yet but leaning towards a really good steak with creamy mash and green beans.

unleashthebook · 27/10/2025 14:19

Roast Turkey
pigs in blankets
cauliflower cheese
roast potatoes (In goose fat with rosemary/thyme/garlic)
roast carrots
roast parsnips
sausagemeat stuffing balls (I just make up a packet of Paxo, cool, and mix in the sausage meat before rolling in to balls, you can add cranberry if you like it)
braised red cabbage
sprouts stir fried with pancetta
mixed greens
Gravy (made a week or two before by roasting a load of chicken wings/drumsticks along with bacon and veg, deglazing with wine, adding some stock and making a thick gravy base that I then add Turkey juices to on the day)

There’s usually quite a lot of us which is why I do a lot of veg, they don’t all eat everything.

magicstar1 · 27/10/2025 14:25

Ours is just like a big Sunday dinner. Nothing really different.
Turkey with stuffing
Baked ham
Roast potatoes
Honey roast parsnips
Brussel sprouts
Roast carrots
Cauliflower cheese
Red cabbage
Gravy

Dessert is Christmas pudding, trifle and maybe pavlova / roulad / cheesecake.

Starwomanwaiting · 27/10/2025 15:45

We may be pretentious twats.

No starter, just martinis with some sort of cheese pastry snackette that I like to make.

We usually have duck, either in a port and cherry sauce or an orange glaze. Occasionally we have done guinea fowl or a really nice chicken. We are not a turkey house.

Roast potatoes in goose fat with rosemary and garlic.
Gratin dauphinoise or tartiflette.
Pigs in blankets.
Honey roast carrots and parsnip with thyme.
Green veg - usually tenderstem broccoli/kale/savoy cabbage.
Nut roast/stuffing. The veggies have it as their main and everyone else has a bit with their meat. I am very proud of this, it’s got lots of very nice ingredients and I sometimes add blue cheese. People always say it’s the best they’ve had! (Not difficult though as so many are too dry.)
Sprouts, if my husband insists, stir fried with chestnuts.

For dessert I tend to do Jamie Oliver’s chocolate pots laced with some sort of booze and served with creme fraiche.

Starwomanwaiting · 27/10/2025 15:46

Oh sometimes I do red cabbage with star anise, cinnamon etc and wine but it’s not that popular so mightn’t bother this year.

NoWordForFluffy · 27/10/2025 15:47

Ditch the star anise and it will maybe be more popular. Awful stuff!

My red cabbage is very popular for our guests.

Oh I love star anise, I use it in curries, especially lamb curries. My husband just doesn’t really like red cabbage. What spices do you use in yours?

This is the recipe I use: https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/make-ahead_red_cabbage_13106

Star anise is very Marmite, I think!
