Xmas Eve supper

MoveAlongNowDear · 26/10/2025 11:32

We normally have loads of people over to supper on Xmas eve, however this year its all change and there will only be 4 of us.
What do people have on Xmas eve? I want it to be simple and not a take away as I live in the middle of nowhere.
TIA

We always have something to contrast with the rich Christmas food that will follow for the next few days. Miso-glazed side of salmon with rice and pickled cucumber is the favourite at the moment. It's quick and easy, but still special, as well.

I sometimes do the pulled pork rolls too, in brioche buns. I like a lot of the ideas here, now to adapt them for half of us being veggie and one no dairy...

safetyfreak · 26/10/2025 17:03

We always have a buffet,

Rocknrollstar · 26/10/2025 17:32

I’m doing a meze board this year - halumi, feta, olives, dolmades, humus, baba ganoush, sun dried tomatoes, tsatsiki, taramasalata and pita bread.

Dontcallmescarface · 26/10/2025 17:34

We usually have something like a mushroom wellington with veg and mash. We don't have a roast dinner on Christmas day though as neither me or DP are fussed about a full Christmas dinner.

Cheese (Cathedral City) and cream crackers.

That's not very festive!

Nestingbirds · 26/10/2025 17:59

Op is this a development you are happy with? Can you not invite a few close friends?

I would head to the local pub in your place, or a carol service and mulled wine. Come back and have a racalette or fondue with Christmas songs.

Nestingbirds · 26/10/2025 18:00

Fine wine or bubbles. Or once we had a firepit outside and some fireworks!

SemmaLina · 26/10/2025 18:03

I usually make a lasagne ( in advance and pop it in the freezer ) garlic bread and some green salad
There will only be 4 of us
Easy , and we all like it

We have a ham (which sometimes makes it to boxing day but not always!), smoked salmon chutney and pickles, cheese board, salad and fresh bread. It's relatively forgiving for people popping by as we have an open house on Christmas eve. Alongside I'm normally prepping bits of Christmas dinner so it doesn't feel a huge effort. I don't make pudding but there's usually chocolate hanging about

mysoulmio · 26/10/2025 18:12

I finish wrapping presents then go to the pub and eat crisps 😂

SliceofTosst · 26/10/2025 18:33

Seafood. Coquilles St Jaques followed by lobster tails. And maybe a baked camenbert later on.

marmitegirl01 · 26/10/2025 19:50

Always baked Camembert with salad bits & mini roast pots. Then crack open the Quality Street 🤷‍♀️👏

I'm quite happy with the new arrangements. I just need to dial down the huge quantities of food I'm used to buying

Xmas eve is a chill one for me, DH and ds(7) - we do a beige buffet of oven party food basically (sausage rolls, chicken bits, little sausages, mozzarella sticks, halloumi etc) and some picky bits like cheese and fruit.

Snuggle up on sofa with new PJ's and watch a cosy film before madness begins the next day

MostlyGhostly · 28/10/2025 20:07

We’ve always done an easy buffet as there’s 6 of us. Now the youngest is 16 we have more grown up part food: baked Camembert, charcuterie, prawns, pickles, salad and crusty bread with large oven pizza for the 16 year old

2025mustbebetter · 28/10/2025 20:11

We go lazy and go to overland and get loads of party food like mini pizzas, sausage rolls etc and have buffet.

OMGitsnotgood · 28/10/2025 20:11

Another thought: have you asked each of your family what would be their favourite Christmas Eve supper (without making any promises in case they don’t work together?)
My DH would say ‘something fishy’ - could be anything from fish pie to garlic prawns to fish soup or mackerel pate.
DDs would say ‘something cheesy’ - could be a baked Camembert or a chunk of brie
DSs would say ‘something meaty’ - pulled pork or spare ribs
I’d use the excuse for a load of seasonal cakes and chocolate.
That might help you craft a smaller buffet made up of everyone’s favourites

Fish pie
