Hi all,

Trying to get ahead of the game this year thinking about presents for PILs! They're quite difficult to buy for as they're not really into "stuff" and don't have specific hobbies. They're in their late 50s/early 60s. MIL has very sensitive skin so all smellies are off the table. Previous gifts we have given include a food hamper (this went down well but have done twice already), an artisanal box of cheeses, new crockery, vouchers for a nice lunch out (they didn't seem overly into this), slippers/loungewear for both, framed family pics (always good and will probably do again, but would like more ideas too). Budget up to £100 ish.

DH is also trying to sound them out, but keen to hear any slightly out-the-box ideas in the meantime, or any previous gift success stories!

Thanks :)

Take them to a Christmas show together. Could literally be theatre or lights thing.

The best thing we ever bought my PIL’S was a stone bird bath they absolutely loved it. As every gift we bought it was a gamble but it was so well received and loved for years.

Take them out for dinner over Christams and pay. Make a day of it.

A big wall calendar with family pictures maybe? Here is an article on making a family calendar, you can highlight birthdays, anniversaries and other meaningful days, maybe add pets' photos if they have any, do a photo collage for every month or add one picture per month, etc.

A magazine or tea/coffee/biscuit subscription

Do you buy a joint gift for them both or individual gifts?

Mine appreciated an experience type gift, that involved spending time with the dc, when we would book and arrange everything. Vouchers usually get left unspent.

We always give a handbag size photo album of the kids from the past year, and this is a huge hit with both grandmas. They love having actual photos to handle and pass around their friends. But maybe something like a digital frame that you can update now and then with new photos?

Past years we have got my in-laws/ parents… suncatcher
plant, posh tea coffee hot chocolate and biscuits set
gardeners hand tools with two pairs of garden gloves and handcream
personalised wallet and purse
glasses holder (looks like a nose)
yankee candle gift set with nice biscuits
a cheese board and a nice wine
wine cooler and personalised pens
voucher for a meal of their choice can’t remember what it’s called but it’s a generic voucher where the recipient chooses over 150 places

How about a cinema gift card? Perhaps not the full £100 but you could team this with a historical city guide - they’re about £20 and we had one for our nearest city. You start at a specific point and search out different locations that give hints to the next location - it was great fun and we had lunch whilst in the city too.

What about subscriptions? You can get them for flowers, for cheese, for books, for coffee - all kinds of things. And you can set for three months or six or twelve. It's like a little present coming every month - and because it's a manageable amount you don't feel as though you've got to eat a mass of (cheese, chocolate, coffee) or deal with anything big.

Plus, something new every month!

Do they have a garden? If so, and they are pleased with it - maybe a framed photo o r even a painting of it. Or maybe picture of a particularly beautiful plant or tree in the ir garden. Same for the house if its attractive and or they love it.
