How much do you spend on teenagers presents?

Small kids are so easy to buy for cheaply but everything my teens want is really expensive. Do you set a price limit for presents for teens? Does it mean they end up with a tiny pile compared to others?

You just can't compare with other people. Being honest, that's probably what my parents spent on me. I cannot afford to do the same. It's not about the money, but of course people with more will want to give as much as possible.

You absolutely can’t compare. @TheLizardQueen says she spends 1k on her dd but has no one else to buy for. So she’s still spending less on presents overall than me if I spend £150 each on my four children because I also buy for 10 nieces/nephews and our siblings and parents…

Some people buy through the year, other people only buy at birthdays and Christmas (including clothes and beauty products etc). Some people count bikes/phones/laptops as presents, other people buy as and when. Some people do a pile, others do one or two gifts. Some people’s stockings contain small proper gifts, others it’s just sweets and stickers.

I can’t even compare with myself from when my adult children were little, my budget was a lot smaller then than it is for their younger siblings now!

@Lauzg90 i found it really easy to buy when my children were really little and had loads of ideas for them. Now our house is just saturated and I have barely any ideas left for my primary age children. They have everything! I’m trying to go the experiences/activities route instead of physical gifts but that’s easier for one than the other!

£500 each up until 16, after that they get £30 and some aftershave

Milestone birthdays after 16 they get £500, normal birthdays £50

What's with all the posts recently about how much people spend at Xmas? They tend to be flooded by posters insisting they don't spend much (which is fine if that's the case) and then outrage at the odd poster who admits to spending more. What Jane, Margret and Lisa from Mumsnet spends really shouldn't matter to what you spend. Spend what you can afford and feel happy spending, without comparing yourself to others.
I don't set a budget. I know someone who used to and would buy things just to make sure that budget was spent on each child even though they didn't need anything else. Madness imo. I give my kids the same amount of gifts to open but for one it might cost more than the other, my kids aren't looking at receipts or anything.

When the children were little we spent £100 each. Now they're teenagers I spend £200-300 each, unless they need a new phone/ipad then it's more that year. I do believe you should only spend what you can afford. Do not go into debt for presents, ever. If you can only afford £50 then that's absolutely fine.
