I should think it would be stronger flavoured but tough....

Billybagpuss · 11/10/2025 18:25

We did, it was nice but I still prefer a turkey, it wasn’t tough

fairislecable · 11/10/2025 18:27

I had capon many years ago and it was lovely but this was a cockerel that had been castrated before maturity.

Cantseetreesforthewood · 11/10/2025 18:42

We've had a capon too.
Not sure I'd rush out to repeat the experience, but I'm not going to be gutted if Mum chooses to do it again.

redfishcat · 11/10/2025 18:46

Yes. It was delicious.

Zofloramummy · 11/10/2025 18:49

We have Capon every year as my dd doesn’t like Turkey. It’s a nice change from chicken.

Soupandaroll · 11/10/2025 20:03

Is it gamey?

Glad to be proved wrong!

notthatoldchestnut · 11/10/2025 20:21

Yes! We have had cockerel the last few years and it is delicious! We love it and it’s well worth the money. Ours comes from the local butcher

FancyCatSlave · 11/10/2025 20:23

We have it quite often, I like it. I like Capon too. We usually go for cockerel when we don’t have many to feed. Or goose but I don’t like that as much cold. Mind you I like all of it so…..

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/10/2025 20:29

We did.
Never again.
He sat at the table crowing and doing his 'cock-a-doodle-doo' thing.
Wouldn't pull a cracker and turned his beak up at the turkey. (We think he may have known it 🙄)
So, lesson learnt, we're not going to invite a pig this year - even if he brings his own blanket.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 11/10/2025 20:38

I never knew a capon was a cockerel. Wow. We always had capon when I was younger as my dad didn’t like turkey 🦃. To be honest it tasted like chicken. Turkey is my absolute favourite and I think it has quite a distinctive taste. Gorgeous.

Autumn1990 · 11/10/2025 20:40

I presume it would be a meat breed, either a modern Ross cob type or something like a bresse which would be fine. If it’s a traditional dual purpose breed such as a Rhode Island Red or light Sussex it’ll be quite different to what you’re used to with chicken
We either have goose or cockerel for Christmas but we grow our own

Ophy83 · 11/10/2025 20:40

No, but we've had goose, duck and pheasant on various years (depending on size of crowd catered for). All delicious.

Louisetopaz21 · 11/10/2025 20:43

I read this as cockatiel, budgie type bird, thinking that crikey that's not gonna go too far, then read Cockerel 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

FeeFiFoFummy · 11/10/2025 20:44

My DH would be delighted if I had ate cock on Christmas Day….

apologies for lowering the tone…

AgnesX · 11/10/2025 20:44

Do you mean a capon? Glorified chicken....

We do that as I don't like turkey. DH gets that at his parents.

ThatBlackCat · 11/10/2025 20:47

In English? What is 'cockerel'?

Man chicken

Man chicken

Is there different servings of chicken for men and women? Like larger serving portions?

fuzzwuss · 11/10/2025 20:59

We had one, some fancy reared in France free range brane, it was nice, but no different from a chicken except there was much more meat, especially breast meat. It wasn't tough and definitely not in any way gamey.

SomeLikeitSnot · 11/10/2025 21:01

@ThatBlackCat are you being facetious or slow? A male chicken….

FancyCatSlave · 11/10/2025 21:04

I have a feeling the capon we have is different to UK cockerel. We usually have Capon when with the Spanish side. I don’t think it is the same here, different rules.

I like all poultry though. Goose is lovely but makes such a mess of the oven compared to cockerel.

I can’t bloody wait to have Christmas dinner 🤣

No, I wasn't being. I have just googled cockerel. It's a male chicken. A chook. Why does it matter what sex a chook is? Why not ask has anyone had a chook for Christmas dinner? Saying 'cockerel' just sounds weird when you can just ask if anyone's had chicken for Christmas. <shrugs>. Does a male chicken taste different from a female chicken? Serious question (I am ASD). And then we'd say rooster. Never heard the word 'cockerel' in my entire life.
