2020's Christmas

Inspired by the 90's Christmas thread. I have great memories of Christmas as a child of the 90s and 00s, but I don't feel like my children are missing out or something because their experience is different to mine. I think in 20 odd years they'll be pinning for the 2020's Christmases we provided for them because it's the feeling of magic and love that we give in doing Christmas with our kids in mind. So I thought I'd start a thread of the things we do now that we enjoy. For me, I was so against getting an elf, I thought it was a giant pain in the butt (which I won't deny it can be when I've gone to bed before remembering it!), but I've actually come to really enjoy coming up with poses for it. I don't do anything too OTT and have many easy days, and we don't have a naughty elf, he can't do anything the kids would get told off for. But mostly it's their excitement at seeing where he is and what he's done. And their happiness at the anticipation of his arrival. Makes it worth it all, and knowing one day they'll look back at these days and the elf and feel the joy and love I felt from my 90s Christmas is lovely

One thing I would say I miss though is Christmas cards. I know they aren't environmentally friendly, but I loved sticking them up on the back of the door and then cutting them up as labels for the next year's Xmas gifts.

Light shows! Definitely not a thing when I was a kid, but a thing now.

The volume of "gifts"

Advent calendars that are now a gift a day.. boxes on the first of December, boxes on Chirstmas eve, etc. all before you even get to Christmas gifts.

I think its easy for older people to get grumbly about it, but actually it is probably what kids will look back on fondly in 20 years.

Christmas adverts is another 2010-2020s one. Adverts going from being 20 seconds to every major shop releasing 1-2 minute short videos... never existed when I was younger, but my son loves seeing the big Christmas adverts in November, and that will certainly be part of his Christmas.

Oh I love it when grouchy people start saying oh we never got so much when we were growing up, we had a nut and one half of a pair of socks to share with our siblings and we were happy. Sure, but let's not pretend you wouldn't have been happy with more too 🙈

Yessssss. The adverts is a great shout! Definitely something to look forward to at Christmas

Oh yes I agree. And also, my parents who were in charge of the 90s Christmas, absolutely love the light shows, Christmas days out etc - they’d definitely have done them in the 90s if they were available.
