Making Christmas Dinner special

I need ideas on how to make Christmas dinner special. We have a roast every Sunday and always have roast potatoes, roast veg, cauliflower cheese, I'm sort of worried our Christmas dinner will be just like any other week.

What makes it stand out for you?

Tbf Christmas dinner is just a lovely Sunday lunch, your family are very lucky that you make them one every week!

I think what makes it special is having the table laid nicely, having wine, music in the background, having it in the middle of the table for people to help themselves (on a normal Sunday I just plate up)

Other people have starters which makes it more of a special event but I like to save myself for the main. You could do different veg for a change - braised red cabbage, creamy leek gratin (mine all love this and it’s an easy one to make ahead), dauphinois potatoes if that’s your thing. A really nice homemade stuffing.

Christmas Dinner is definitely an occasion when less is not more...it comes with about twice (or three times!) the amount of sides as a normal roast so that everyone can have their favourite and there are looooooads of leftovers which I think is the best of the Christmas food.

Table laid extra special - we have a Christmas tablecloth & napkins we use every year, wine glasses DM72 bought in the Netherlands when she was in her 30s, crackers, candles...

Canapés earlier in the living room while we're still opening presents - blinis with smoked salmon, sour cream and caviar; devils on horseback (prunes wrapped in bacon that go all sticky and delicious in the oven) and a few M&S oven type - maybe filo king prawns.

A starter makes it more special than regular Sunday lunch ("lunch" is a bit generous as we usually eat 5pm ish 😁) - last few years I've made a homemade beetroot & cranberry Gravadlax. As a child we always had crab & prawn cocktail (tinned crab - I was a child of the 80s and 90s!!)

We now have Roast Goose on Christmas Day (Turkey on 23rd with Nigella's Double Sprout & Pineapple Fried Rice and gravy made ahead then - this means we can still have our beloved Turkey & Ham pie on Boxing Day or 27th and less to do on Christmas Day if the gravy is done!)

It comes with...roast potatoes, roast parsnips, cauliflower cheese, mash potatoes, mashed swede, sprouts, carrots, red cabbage, pigs in blankets, 2 or 3 types of homemade stuffing balls, bread sauce, cranberry sauce & gravy!

Then flaming Christmas Pudding for the fanfare, individual microwaved sticky toffee puddings for those that don't like Christmas Pudding.

I am getting quite excited (and hungry!) thinking about it!

I end up doing 3 types of potatoes (everyone gets their favourite), pigs in blankets, proper stuffing balls, yorkshire puddings loads of different veg (again everyone choses their favourite.)

Some brilliant, genius suggestions here so thank you all.
It honestly hadn't occurred to me to forgo roasts for the weeks before, that's definitely going to happen now.
And some of the starters and extra sides sound amazing so there will be a few things to add this year 😊

I’m making our extra specisl
this year, flying to the Canaries and going out in the evening for a Indian 😂
Can’t wait!

Don’t cook a roast for all of December until Christmas Day. That way it’s a treat again.

Cook shepherds pies, casseroles, stews etc between now and then so when you have your Christmas lunch it’ll be a really nice thing that you look forward to.

Do a starter on Christmas Day as well as trimmings you don’t always have plus puddings- that’ll make it feel different to a usual Sunday.

We dont have roast every week

At Christmas there are DF, DBand partner plus DH, DS17 and myself- we have the full roast but as guests arrive at 11ish we have champagne cocktails and nibbles

Then for lunch starter is seafood -smoked salmon options for the majority that like it plus crab and prawns for DF and myself

Desert is a slither of brandy flambé Christmas pud plus mini mince pie and then an amazing cheeseboard with port

The table is decorated by myself with fancy crackers and napkins and foliage and a little mini present each

Sounds like our usual roast. We have no roasts from November onwards.
2/3 different meats, 4 different stuffings, pigs and blankets galore.

CheeseNinja · 08/12/2025 19:39

Decorated table, nice tablecloth, candles, Christmas crackers, all food on buffet style plates so everyone can help themselves, pigs in blankets, sprouts and of course the only day of the year we eat turkey!

gogomomo2 · 08/12/2025 19:44

Red cabbage, homemade cranberry orange relish, bread sauce.

We're having steak this year as I'm not a huge fan of roasts. Lest year we had paella and we've had duck in the past. Confit duck legs are really easy but look and taste amazing
