6yr old Book Recommendations

I always like to gift my dd (6, almost 7) a few new books for Christmas. She is into chapter books and I’m looking for some recommendations. She is a very good reader although we usually do a mixture of me reading then her. She isn’t very girly so wouldn’t be into anything about fairies/princesses/unicorns.

Some that she has read and enjoyed:
Daisy and the trouble with.. series
Isadora Moon
Kitty
Roald Dahl - The Twits and Georges Marvellous Medicine
The Worst Witch series

I was looking at Matt Haig books such as The Truth Pixie and To be a Cat but wasn’t sure if they were still a bit old for her? Maybe Diary of a Wimpy Kid?

What else is out there?

TIA

Ooh watching with interest - have a son the same age who is a good reader too and likes chapter books.

He loves the 13 storey treehouse series, and the magic treehouse books which are fab. Also the Roald Dahl books (especially charlie and the chocolate factory) and some Enid Blyton books like the faraway tree. He's recently got into the Winnie the Witch books (which I really dislike).

I got the Chronicles of Narnia just before I turned 7, still have them and bought them for neices and nephews at the same ages. They've all been read.

Michael Morpurgo books were also well received. Harry Potter too, best loved by the (not a girly girl) girl who wasn't a fan of reading by herself until she was given them.

Rainbow Grey is a lovely series, as is Amelia Fang. Neither is especially girly but both have excellent heroines.

My daughter is 6 and similar, also not girly at all, our reading list is very similar. At the moment she enjoys the Secret Seven, Judy Moody series, Ramona series, and Kevin the Unicorn (not a typical unicorn!) books.

Also, maybe a bit of a curve ball but what she absolutely loves currently is comics: Dogman, Bunny Vs Monkey, Phoebe and the Unicorn, Asterix. Through cousins she got her hands on a couple of the Raina Telgemaier books which I felt were a bit old but she adores. Might be worth exploring for something a bit different, they're all actually pretty funny.

Ivy & bean 😍 my teenagers still creep over to listen if I'm reading it aloud!

Hotel Flamingo books

@AquaFurballI am desperate for her to start reading Harry Potter but for some reason she is resisting!! Trying not to force it…but also really want to force it haha

I hadn’t thought of the Narnia books, thank you

@OrangeSmoke I am so intrigued by the Raina Telgemaier books, I might take a punt and get one for her to try. Thanks for putting them on my radar.

loads of great ideas, I’ve got quite a lengthy list on the go now

Wigglesbottom Primary series. Pippi Longstocking. My Naughty Little Sister.

RidiculousRed · 24/09/2025 20:51

The Grimwood series by Nadia Shireen. Very funny books.

Latenightreader · 24/09/2025 20:57

Not sure if they are still in print but my 6yo loved the Carbonel books by Barbara Sleigh. We are reading The Horse and his Boy together at bedtime, and have previously read Mrs Pepperpot, My Naughty Little Sister and Allotment Lane School.

She loves the Daisy books (Daisy and the trouble with...) but I can't bear them so she has to read them herself!

HolyMoly24 · 24/09/2025 22:13

@Latenightreader Just looked up Carbonel and it sounds amazing, my daughter is cat crazy as well so she may love it! Thank you

Hotel Flamingo books

I was coming to say Hotel Flamingo as well. There are currently four, and there is another coming out next month.

My DS is 7 and a very good reader. We also do a mix of reading to him and him reading by himself. In the last year or so he's read:

Winnie & Wilbur (chapter books)
13 Storey Treehouse
Mr Gum
Wigglesbottom Primary
My Brother's Famous Bottom
The Hundred Mile An Hour Dog
Minecraft Woodsword/Stonesword Chronicles
Knight in Training
The Boy Who Grew Dragons
The Hodgeheg
Most Roald Dahl (he read the short ones, we read the long ones!)

And we're currently reading the Secret Seven books to him, which he's enjoying.

He's lucky that he's got DD11 who loves reading, so she's passed a lot of her smaller chapter books down to him, and he's got loads more to choose from. Her favourite was Jeremy Strong, we've got so many of his books for DS to work through!

Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton’s ‘Faraway tree’ series.

The Rabbit & Bear books are a favourite around here. They are funny (some poo humour) but also have lovely underlying messages about friendship, accepting others, staying positive, etc.
