Warhammer gift ideas

19 year old DS has very recently purchased himself a starter kit for Warhammer. Apparently something he has wanted to get into for a while.

I know as much about Warhammer as I do about nuclear physics, which is to say nothing at all. So I have no idea where to begin with adding to his new hobby.

DS is notorious for never asking for anything, so every Christmas and birthday I'm left guessing what he might like. So when he shows a particular interest in something I jump on that bandwagon. So can anyone advise what gifts a new Warhammer fan would appreciate? Thank you very much.

Maybe a t-shirt or a hoodie with Warhammer logo?.. Or could be a poster calendar with it, it would go down extremely well if he already has posters in his room
Figurine(s) or other collectibles, especially if he's looking forward to build a collection
Paint and brushes would be an obvious answer, see which army he's building and get the models and things connected to it.

The common paint brands are :
Citadel
Vallejo
Army painter
AK interactive
Pro acryl paints

I've used them all, they all have their uses. As you get to be a better painter you figure out which one works best for the way you paint, and also different colours have different amounts of pigment in them. A selection from different brands is a good thing in my opinion.

The war hammer combat patrol monthly magazine comes with models and various accessories, part of the magazine gives an in-depth walkthrough on how to paint that month's mini. It can be really good for people getting started.

Online shops I find best value for this stuff -

Does he know what army he wants to play? If he's just starting out there's Combat Patrol boxes which include armies for lower point games which most people start out playing. He'll also need a codex (rulebook for his chosen army) you can download digital ones to your phone, or some people prefer the physical book. GW normally release holiday boxes called Battleforce which are often very good value for money (compared with buying all the models separately) and short run one and done products, so often shoot up in value.

You're probably best off asking him to compile a wishlist as there's not much point buying him Space Marine models if he's wanting to play an Ork army!

You can use any model paints designed for wargames minis Citadel, Army Painter and Vallejo are the main brands. If he's a total newbie to the hobby, then picking up some small starter sets could be a good shout. If there's an independent gaming store local to you, then often they carry a couple of different paint ranges. Whichever brand he goes for, you spray paint an undercoat first before using the pots. Youtube is a fantastic resource for painting tutorials and can help with deciding colour schemes and which paints to buy for a particular project.

I have also gotten into Warhammer, I mostly paint but I do play as well.

First things first:

If he actually wants to assemble the models rather than just keeping them in the boxes indefinitely (looking at you Dp!) then he’ll need some clippers to remove the parts of the models from the plastic sprues they come on. You can’t do much without them as you risk breaking the models if you don’t have something to cut them off with. You may also need some sort of glue/adhesive depending on whether they are push-fit or not. He will need this to assemble all the models as they come in lots of very small parts.

If he wants to paint the models he’ll need a primer so the paints actually sticks to the plastic. I personally prefer a black or grey as I think it’s the most versatile, and I prefer a brush on type as the rattle cans can be tricky to use, it can be messy, you need good ventilation and if it’s too humid in the atmosphere you can get a very ‘bumpy’ finish which isn’t great for adding paint on top of.

If he wants to play games I really recommend the spearhead sets in Age of Sigmar or the Combat patrol sets in 40k. These are stand alone army boxes that contain a ‘mini army’ and they have loads of different types with different abilities. It’s a much more cost effective way of actually being able to play the game without needing to spend ££££ on collecting lots of different models to have enough ‘points’ to play a full game. The rules are also simplified so it’s much quicker and easier to pick up the game play as a total beginner. It can get very complicated and overwhelming very quickly!

Good luck! 😁😁

I got one of these recently and it’s very helpful for painting, keeps all your stuff together!

Try and have a conversation about the army he wants to collect. My son used to be really into it. It looks like there are some Space Marines on that box. He might want a tank or something to go with it. Also, paints are expensive and to do it really well you need a lot of colours, however it's hard to know what colours he's going to want so maybe some kind of voucher so he can get them when he needs?

Ilovelurchers · 22/09/2025 22:31

My DD is interested in it (we did the introduction at one of the stores recently where you paint a miniature and they tell you all about it) but she only wants to build and paint the figures, not play the game.

You can get a starter set of the paints and brushes which I think is only about £20 -- just check the starter kit he got didn't contain that!

And then just buy him a figure/set to build and paint that you think he would like and that is within his budget?

There are two mythologies (if that is the right thing to call them) you can choose from - 4000 and Age of Sigmar. From the kit he has bought, he has chosen 4000. If you go into one of the shops, one half of it will be devoted to 4000 and the other to Age of Sigmar.

I would take him to Warhammer World in Nottingham and give him money to buy some bits from there. The shop has SO MUCH. I'm not interested in Warhammer but DH is and we were visiting friends so decided to go, I was amazed. So detailed and so much to look at.

The warhammer shop in the town is also really good. The people in there are knowledgeable and really helpful.

If you're not local then you could make a weekend of it.

DH had loads of kit but turns out he is too shakey to paint the delicate features so now we have lots of plain Space Marines. He enjoys the 40k books. He doesn't play the board game either.

Just cam across this thread. My son decided he wanted to do warmer until it arrived and he saw the level of work and went off it!

As a result he has this massive set which is completely unused and brand new, along with the paints and tools to go with it.

If anyone is West Yorkshire way and looking for a bargain, it's for sale!

A tackle box (or similar) is excellent for keeping paints/brushes etc. all together.

Glass-fronted cupboard to display finished models in.

Beachbodyready · 24/09/2025 15:27

I buy accessories for my models from a company called Beyond Games although there are lots of other companies that do similar - I found them on Etsy.

How much are you wanting for it?

Restlessinthenorth · 24/09/2025 18:35

@HalfasleepChrisintheMorning just had a look and looks like it would be £130 to buy it all today (see pics), so maybe £50?

We recently did a VR game at Zero latency VR which have a few around the country, which was a space marine warhammer game- highly recommend even if like me you have no idea what a space marine is! Otherwise games workshop is the place to go - my son loves his codex

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 24/09/2025 20:10

Those look like space marines OP.

I've not played / painted since I was a teen, but DB and I had 40k - he was space marines and I was orcs.

You want the right 'side' of the war as well as the right war, iyswim!

I'd probably go for something from this range if it were me - it's recognisably the same army, and shouod go with what he's got.

I've thoroughly enjoyed looking at the website, I'm going into the next warhammer store I pass! 😂

Sorry for the delayed reply, thank you so much for everyone's tips and advice.

Im going to get him some paints and brushes and a sort of work station thingy he can set up on his desk. Then if he continues with it, I have gift ideas for every future Christmas and birthday 🙂
