OK, first of all, I know it's still September but we need to start this thread now because as you all know, having a truly Poncetastic Christmas involves precision planning, strategy, bravery, heroics, and frequently martyrdom. A bit like the war in Afghanistan, only with nicer food and sparkly shoes.

So, if you, like me, actually want to make the next twelve weeks of your life a misery by hand-crafting your cards, finding a huge bucket for Nigella's turkey in brine, pickling pears, shrivelling oranges in a low oven for those rustic au naturel decorations, dragging half a holly bush back from the woods, and just generally being a smug annoying jobsworth ponce, join me on this thread.

Feel free to post photos of previous tree-trimming, cake icing or table centrepiece triumphs, discuss this year's bauble colour themes, debate the merits of Delia versus Gordon, road-test a selection of canapes and cocktails, (all in the line of duty) and link to lovely inspirational photos/craft ideas for a truly Poncetastic Christmas.

Warning: If your idea of a good Christmas involves Pizza, ITV, gravy granules or anything with 'Aunt Bessies' on the packet, this is not the thread for you.The days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to brown, that can only mean one thing- it's time to ignore the waves of Halloween decor all over your local The Range and head to the woods to start picking your own holly for that perfect Kirsty inspired wreath.

We want homemade stuffing recipes perfected by November, the handmade crackers draped in the most delicate of embroidered ribbon, mantle pieces draped in the most Scandinavian of wooden carvings, specialised stamps for the personalised wrapping paper ordered by next week and the word craft to be your official middle name by new year.

Happy ponceing and may Nigel and Nigella's fairy lights guide you on your way to getting the last box of rosemary and sea salt crackers in your own personal Bethlehem.

@ACrackerAQuackerAndADanishCharm

planning a circular wreath hung flat from the ceiling over the table with electric candles. I did similar another year. I will see if I can find a photo.

I could redo this one with more greenery and fewer candles.

Sostrene Grene must be having a big push in the UK, we’ve got a new one near us and one opened in out other nearest big town last year. It is such a soothing, relaxing place to mooch round.

Except when it's busy and people break the one way system and start coming at you!
I love ot too, but I won't leave it until my last shop like I did on Monday. Trying to get around the place whilst laden down with half a dozen carrier bags was quite a challenge (blame TK Maxx - I only went in for soap!)

I do this in our kitchen- there is a handy hook that has been screwed into the beam.

Peachypips78 · 07/11/2025 12:37

I made these last year and people thought they were funny. But I think people might get quickly maxed out on crocheted gifts!

@Peachypips78 They are absolutely brilliant.

These are beautiful

@Peachypips78
My DGS would love that. His Christmas dinner is sprouts and pigs in blankets!

Ah, I have avoided that scenario so far. But have experienced similar in Flying Tiger in the past and it doesn’t have the soothing low lights either.

I would absolutely never get bored of these ❤️

TheWoollybacksWife · 07/11/2025 19:53

Oh those pigs in blankets are fabulous @Peachypips78. I make Fererro covers each year for my friend to use as place settings. I've made sprouts, puddings, Santa hats, elf hats, Christmas trees, highland coos, and the nativity in previous years. This year it's nutcrackers.

Magnoliasunrise · 08/11/2025 07:10

Love those fererro covers!! Do you have a link to a pattern please|? My mum is a great knitter and she might make me some.

TheWoollybacksWife · 08/11/2025 14:45

@Magnoliasunrisethey're crochet and I've made the pattern up myself. If your mum can crochet then I'm happy to PM you the pattern (once I've got rid of the crossings out and weird hieroglyphics and written it out in a format that can be understood by other people 😂)

Magnoliasunrise · 08/11/2025 18:28

@TheWoollybacksWife that's really kind of you and I am so impressed with your skills. Mum can't crochet but no worries as I think I've found a similar knitted pattern for a xmas pud type thing. Thanks anyway though.

PinballWizened · 08/11/2025 19:59

@Peachypips78 I might be visiting Exeter tomorrow so will make a beeline for Sostrene Green. Thanks for the tip!

I’ve completed my Christmas gift knitting projects now, ends sewn in and everything.

We’re being hosted for Christmas Day so dinner will be one of Linda McCartney’s shrivelled flippers seasoned with angst.
I need to avoid any disappointment with a really good festive meal plan. Would it be bad form to do a banging roast on the 21st?

ACrackerAQuackerAndADanishCharm · 09/11/2025 12:02

That's beautiful @Trumpton, and you could use all the candles - this is done in Scandinavia too.

Have you seen the paper coronets, traditionally filled with sweets/nuts/treats? I don't know how much you actually want to do...but they're a lovely, simple craft.

CrushingOnRubies · 09/11/2025 14:27

I know it’s not that pouncey but thought i would mention it. Popped into Asda and they have in stock the old fashioned parcel ribbon and bows, the foily stuff. I know it’s not eco friendly but i am not a fan of the raffia paper stuff. Rips easily and hard to do pretty twirly ribbons with. Thought I would
mention as I can’t be the only one who prefers it

My teenage daughter has a Saturday job in a really lovely interiors shop and I had to go in this weekend to help her spend her staff discount for the year. I got this lovely gonk! (Amongst other tasteful items). He’s probably supposed to be for Christmas but I love him so he’s sitting on my sofa being autumnal, rather than away with the decs

I am away at the moment so will send a photo when I get back but the stuff I used wasn't actually interfacing, it is something they use to make pelmets so it holds it's shape. I got it from eBay. It is called buckram.

I also have this pattern and my fabric, but I ended up buying double sided fusible buckram. Can anyone reassure me that this will (or won’t) work. I am procrastinating about starting just in case it is a disaster

Trumpton · 10/11/2025 20:03

Paperwhites started!

Poncetastic Christmas 2025
FurForksSake · 10/11/2025 20:06

Mine are in the garage, I’ll start them in a couple of weeks? My Christmas cactus is as usual covered in flowers because it isn’t an actual Christmas cactus 🌵

Trumpton · 10/11/2025 23:02

This is the time line of my Paperwhites. I keep them on pebbles with some water just below the bulbs for a couple of weeks in a cool dark place then bring them into the warm.
I can link to full instructions from last year if anyone wants.

@MargoChanellingBarbara you could maybe use some plain thin cotton on the other side then use as normal?
