Names vs nicknames

Okay not the end of the world type thread, but curious what other people do.
Every member of our family has a Christmas stocking with their first initial on (original I know). My youngest name is Edward, but we call him Ted day to day, his brother couldnt say Edward at first and it came out as Ted so we have affectionately used this since 🥰
Would you get E or T on the stocking??
His room has a few personalised bits in it and they all say Edward. Really don't know which one to go for. First world problems I know! What do all you other mams do with your Matilta/Tilly, Charlotte/Lottie etc?

I don’t think it matters although I would be incline to go with E because the stockings will last years but his nickname might change.

Rorys · 07/09/2025 12:42

I’d go for E that’s his name
unless yours and DPs are M for mum or D for dad (or whatever names you use)

Ted is a diminutive of Edward. Lottie is a diminutive of Charlotte. They aren’t nicknames.

Ted is a diminutive of Edward. Lottie is a diminutive of Charlotte. They aren’t nicknames.

You’re confused. All diminutives are a type of nickname, but not all nicknames are diminutives. The examples you give are a diminutive type of nickname. Therefore, the terminology of nickname is completely appropriate.

I'd probably get the E. His name will always start with E, what you call him may not.

I use a diminutive of my name day to day but my Christmas stocking has my proper initial (mainly because we have a repeat letter otherwise)

That's what I thought thanks everyone!

Very aware its not a huge deal, just getting his santa box ready for him and realised he's my first DC with a NN using a different initial!

And to PP who asked, we don't use M for mam we just use our first name initial ☺️
