Big present for non sporty 10yo ds with no real hobbies

For bday actually but near Christmas. He likes arts and crafts and music but not gaming or sport. When asked what he would like he has no idea and suggested science kits.

So does anyone know any good science kits that are big presents - I don’t think he’d like a microscope or binoculars or that kind of thing?

Re music - he plays several instruments (piano, guitar, drums) but we have everything I think.

Also any good experience ideas (London/south-east). Last year we adopted him an animal at London zoo and also gave him a ticket for a day at the zoo to visit it and then went down well.

I am really struggling for ideas.

An annual pass for Wonderlab at the Science Museum? I think you can buy gift vouchers

A day out to nearest city with tickets to a children’s concert or a musical and a fun place to eat? I’m in my 50s so stop me if this sounds Victorian but there’s often a Gilbert and Sullivan on at that sort of time, especially in London, and they are still a riot of fun at the right production.

My son loved any noodle place at that age, or a Korean barbecue where you cook the food at the table.

One of the Christmas shows we enjoyed most of all was Ben Hur at the Kilburn theatre but that wasn’t a musical. Hilarious though. We often went to the National Theatre Christmas shows which are always incredible and about half the price of anywhere else.

If he’s into art, how about a camera?
Or a Whizz Pop Bang magazine or Tinkerer box subscription?

Snorkeling in an aquarium? Ds went scuba diving in an aquarium for his 10th birthday and absolutely loved it.

A cooking course?

A STEM or art subscription box?

Would he like Airfix if he's crafty? Then you're sorted for presents for years. Paints, brushes and glue to fill his stocking. You can buy large expensive sets or smaller cheaper ones? Move on from planes or cars to tanks and soldiers and build dioramas?

What about an ikea trolley with craft art and science kit bits and bobs in it? He can then use it for storage etc in his room?

We got him that last year so def the right lines!

Great ideas - thank you. None quite right for him but almost, so I know the right idea is out there)

Sleepover at Science Museum or Greenwich observatory if they do them

Would he like another up close with animals - I think Port Lympne/Howletts do a feed giraffe type thing

I was thinking along similar lines. A telescope so he can star gaze from his bedroom?

Ri membership?... Have a Christmas 'event' also stuff all year..
Greenwich Observatory good if you not been there..

Concert royal albert hall or gig at roundhouse? Or just gig if like music..
Royal college of music do lots of concerts by their students if you can get in a lot.

Chocolateisameal · 02/09/2025 22:57

Is Warhammer still a thing? That was a lot of painting and stuff, from what I remember.

Also, train sets because you spend ages making the layouts. You can buy kit buildings to construct etc.

ForFunGoose · 02/09/2025 23:04

My ds was similar and liked Manga and Kawaii drawing books. We also got him a magazine subscription for national geographic kids at that age.

Flibbertyfloo · 03/09/2025 00:34

Art lessons?

RealPearlDuck · 03/09/2025 11:40

Annual pass for the Science Museum would be an amazing idea, OP!

If there is a favorite artist or a band he likes, you can make a wall calendar poster with their pictures. Not sure about the concert tickets, but maybe you can get two for both of you and him to the show he would enjoy attending.

Model kits or a 3D printer might be a good idea https://www.tomshardware.com/3d-printing/best-3d-printers-for-kids-and-teens
