Gift ideas for 60 year old DM

In terms of stocking fillers, she’s very easy to buy for as she has used the same toiletries for years etc.

However, I’m struggling to think of a larger gift for her this year. I usually gift her an experience, such as gig tickets. I’ve also bought her a new set of makeup brushes (as hers old ones were falling apart.)

She loves to travel and does so frequently.

(I’m her only living close relative, so I do like to spoil her!)

definitely a weekend away with you or trip to theatre and meal.... if you can afford it. im 61 and would love this with my daughter.

MaturingCheeseball · 15/08/2025 16:29

Boring, but I would really like a nice sponge bag set. You say she travels a lot, so this might be useful. I use the free ones that come with make-up sets etc, and they are all a bit tired and manky. Not a big present, tho!

Preciousssssss · 15/08/2025 16:32

New luggage if any of hers is falling apart or becoming inefficient?

Latest tech for listening to music on the go?

Sports / gym wear for looking chic and powerful in foreign gyms?

A fabulous new swimsuit?

A kagool? (Not bog standard camping style. I’m thinking of something expensive.)

The best and coolest sunglasses possible.

A voucher for the opera / a restaurant / whatever in the next place she plans to visit?

I’m a similar age to her and these are things I’d be pleased to receive. (As long as the giver either completely knows my tastes or offers the option of exchange.)

This is a perfect gift. I love doing things like this with my Dds.

Imtoooldforallthis · 15/08/2025 16:34

Designer sunglasses are a good shout.

Such a good shout with the theatre! I’ll have a look to see what is being scheduled in our area. Thank you!

Gym clothes, I love lulu lemon or sweaty Betty. Or look at some wide trousers and a soft jumper for wearing on the plane when she travels.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 15/08/2025 20:42

When my DD asks me what I want for my birthday I always say time with her. I'm a similar age to your DM so I can imagine, as it sounds like you have a lovely relationship, that she will probably think the same! My DD also buys me make up brushes as she is always disgusted with the state of mine when she visits!

I would say theatre or spa day for the two of you.

InSpainTheRain · 15/08/2025 21:09

Posh afternoon tea with you. Night away with you, spa day, pedi/mani together . anything where you spend time with her.

Rosalind1971 · 15/08/2025 21:32

Theatre weekend, spa weekend I’d love all of this

Preciousssssss · 15/08/2025 21:45

Afternoon tea is not a gift - it’s just a way of telling women over 60 that they should be doing something gentle and ‘ladylike’, out of the way of the throbbing, noisy, real world.

If any of the younger generation of my family want to ‘spend time with’ me they’d better be bringing tickets to a Chappell Roan concert …

user1471453601 · 15/08/2025 21:52

Please remember that not all 60 year olds are the same. Just as we were when we were 20, we are all different.

As an example, I'm 74 and the last gift I was given was a very pretty broach that had two flowers on it, between the words "fuck the patriarchy" '

I love that broach, it somehow sums me up.

JDM625 · 15/08/2025 21:53

Time spent you with you is likely the most appreciated gift of all!

-Voucher to a garden centre for plants or a luncheon meal there with you
-Bird bath or bird feeder for the garden
-Spa day, pedicure. manicure with you
-Comedy club or other event together

I hear you. DM is not keen on afternoon tea. She tried it once and said it was a nice experience, but wouldn’t have one again!

My DM is very similar. She loves a good gig. We’re seeing Lady Gaga together soon.

I perhaps mistakenly assumed that as you’d mentioned travel, you mainly wanted suggestions of things / experiences she could enjoy whilst striding across the globe.

So I’m a bit puzzled by a pp’s bird bath idea!

persisted · 16/08/2025 07:35

If you can manage it a weekend European city break with a show?

A few years ago I was going to stay in Paris and see the opera, lockdowns screwed up that plan and not had the opportunity since.

CrotchetyQuaver · 16/08/2025 08:55

Aged nearly 61 (this coming Tuesday) and sat outside an Airbnb on a birthday weekend away with my 2DD, I'd say think about doing something like that...

Darkling1 · 16/08/2025 11:43

Thank you all for your suggestions. I think I’ll go down the theatre route. I’ve come across a show she may enjoy at a local theatre in 2026.

I haven’t got the budget, which would extend to a weekend away at the moment. (Though, it’s my fault for not stating a budget in my original post!)

Theatre & food seems like the best route for your DM. Often wished there were Alexa or similar years ago as a couple of older relatives had falls. They weren't available at the time but would have worked well as a remedy and a present for less able oldies (me shortly👀🙄)

PennyBP2 · 16/08/2025 18:27

I'm a 62 year old mother and grandmother and would love some time with either a DIL or daughter. A trip with a show thrown in, a spa treatment together, or a nice meal together would be perfect for me. At my age I pretty much have everything I want so some time together would be the perfect gift

Preciousssssss · 16/08/2025 18:32

I’m not planning on having any falls, @Vynalbob - and I’m actually pretty insulted that you think that’s what being 60 means.

Helpmefindmysoul · 16/08/2025 18:35

A nice designer handbag.

Sambobby1 · 16/08/2025 19:53

My two sons bought me a surprise trip to Abba Voyage for my 60th. Their partners and DH came too it was amazing and a fantastic surprise.

LindaMo2 · 16/08/2025 21:21

Give her your time. Breakfast somewhere nice then a morning/day shopping together. Maybe buy her a little something she likes when you are out but really it’s your time together she’ll love most.

i hear you Preciousssss, I'm 63 in two weeks and do crossfit four times a week, can deadlift 120 kg, bench press 60 kg and am actually fitter now than I have ever been (despite one shoulder replacement and two knee ops oh and throw permanent Vertigo into the mix) I refuse to be a walking cliche!
