Switch advice

Looking to get my son (6) a switch for Christmas. He has been asking about Minecraft etc a lot. I have no idea about these things, are there any deals to look out for, I know there’s a switch 2, is the original one still sufficient for basic? Any help would be appreciated, thank you

I bought my son the original Switch for Christmas not long after it came out, he’s 18 now and still uses it very regularly, hasn’t even asked about getting a Switch 2 and he gets new games for it all the time so don’t think there would at all be an issue with getting an older model. By far the best time to get one especially if looking to buy new, is around Black Friday, sometimes the console itself will be significantly discounted, sometimes it will be a “bundle” of eg the console and 2 games together for not much more than the usual price of the console alone etc.

What @Britneyfan said! The original is still great. There's so few titles that are exclusive to the Switch 2.

If you don't care about connecting it to the TV, you can find the Switch Lite for £100-120 second hand, and upgrade to a Switch 2 years down the line without having to re-buy the games.

For a 6yo I'd avoid buying games on physical cartridges. They are small and loseable.

If you're thinking about Christmas now you can wait out discounts on downloaded titles on the eShop over the next few months.

dekudeals.com is really handy - you can set up a wishlist of titles and it'll alert you when they're discounted, and give you a history of previous discounts.

We bought the switch for ds when he was 6 he loved it. Mostly mario but he does have Minecraft and a few others. Has used it every day for 4 years. It’s easy to use, can play as a family, he can play it hooked up to the tv or as a hand held console.
We just got him the switch 2 for his birthday he loves it and really wanted it. Its extremely similar to switch (it’s probably better graphics etc but nothing a 6 year old is going to notice) You can play all switch games on the switch 2 plus any new switch 2 games (obviously you can’t play switch 2 games on switch) it’s worth noting switch 1 games cost £10-50. The switch 2 games (there’s only 2 or 3 currently) are £60-75.

At the minute I would say get the switch it’s significantly cheaper and there’s a lot of games to chose from. If you got the switch 2 you would inevitably end up buying switch games as there’s not enough content for switch 2 yet.
plus in aFew years he’s likely to follow what his friends are into and a lot of pre teens/teens go Xbox or PlayStation. But if he loves his switch you can always upgrade i to switch 2 down the line.

i personally wouldn’t bother with switch lite, it’s apparently not that good and not that much cheaper really. Plus I really like that we can do Mario kart or Mario jamboree as a family it means we get to share the fun with him.

Oh thank you so much everyone this has all been so helpful! Def think I’ll just go for the normal switch. My sons not a big gamer (yet anyway), so think we will stick to switch and see how he gets on with it for few years, and mega bonus the games are cheaper too.

thanks again ☺️
