All presents, catering, school events, work events, cards, wrapping, charity, advent, pantomimes, Santa visits, Christmas pyjamas, bedding etc…

Probably around £3k for 5 of us when you include Santa’s Sleepover at Alton towers, pantomime, Christmas Eve meal out etc.

dontcomeatme · 02/07/2025 22:03

Maybe £1000? Just under. But that's all the family DC presents too. We have a big family, lots of cousins.

Holdonforsummer · 02/07/2025 22:09

£1k: £200 on each child (2 of them), £200 on other pressies, £300 on food and drink and £300 on days out.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 04/07/2025 10:33

Quick estimate for last year approx £1150 - includes 3 DCs presents, new pjs & slippers ( buy every 2 years), Santa visit, most family presents, I didn’t keep track of everything. Also dosnt include my presents.

No work parties

Two school fares, one we do a stall & profit usually covers free rein of the kids buying what they want. Other one maybe £40 on mainly overpriced sugary cupcakes.

Foodbank gifts and donations varies, last year we had quite a few gifts and toys we’d collected that had been won or given to my DCs as gifts they didn’t want I spent maybe £20 on top.

No extra for food and drink, we just buy what we’d normally do, same with eating out.

No big boozy nights out, we haven’t been able to handle them for years so just don’t bother anymore.

cards/wrapping paper I only buy an odd roll as I have a good supply of paper and bags, kids Christmas cards about £3. Sadly the elderly relatives we still send cards too get fewer each year, I’ve been using the same box of cards for about 3 years.

Decorations I love buying something every year but buy in weekly shopping so don’t keep track and only buy a few. Last year I bought a few to start a change of colour theme this year, everything was in the sale but will mean I will have to buy a few more this year.

We have quite a few birthdays at this time of year so that bumps up the spending by a couple of hundred, but it’s not actually on Christmas per say.

We don’t set a budget, we spread the cost throughout the year and buy what’s needed, some years it’s more than others. As long as our weekly budgets cover everything and we aren’t using credit we don’t think about it.

Gogobabyshark · 04/07/2025 10:38

For gifts we spend around £800 and about £150 on additional hosting.
Father Christmas and another visit to somewhere like christmas lights comes to about £200. Then another £100 on new decorations.

All in around £1300

Tulipvase · 04/07/2025 19:12

1.5 to 1.8K I reckon. Family of 5 age 15 to 20. They don’t really get presents from anyone else though.

Poopeepoopee · 04/07/2025 19:58

This is an interesting thread.

It's looking like it now costs £1k for an average family christmas which isn't too bad really.

But not many people are spending less than £1k.

I'd say I spend about £1k

MuddlingThroughLife · 04/07/2025 20:03

Last years gift total: £1300

The rest is guesstimates......
Wrapping paper and cards: £50
My Christmas doo: £250
DH Christmas doo: £150
Christmas food treats for house and bits for Christmas dinner: £300
Work team presents: £60
Miscellaneous, i.e. new decorations, pub nights, Christmas dinner in work etc: £400

So all in, around £2500 last year.

Mikart · 04/07/2025 20:04

£400

Sprogonthetyne · 04/07/2025 20:04

Aim for £500, some years I go over but probably not hight then 600

DisapprovingSpaniel · 04/07/2025 20:05

£1250 - £1500, depending on what the plans are that year. Small-ish family and no kids.

InterestedBeing · 04/07/2025 20:07

Christmas pyjamas, bedding etc…

People seriously buy this crap?

Given at Christmas is once a year, why can't the Christmas bedding just be kept from year to year, and reused.

RuthW · 04/07/2025 20:32

Maybe about £600

SecretWitch · 04/07/2025 20:40

Probably less than £200. I live in the US and things are very expensive. £100 for Christmas gifts and the other 100 on food/ nice snacks.

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 04/07/2025 20:40

Depends on what presents I buy, I tend to buy what I want rather than stick to a planned amount so it probably evens out over the years. I don't spend much on food and I don't do Christmas activities or buy Christmas 'stuff'.

Ratisshortforratthew · 04/07/2025 20:44

Last year about £4k taking myself to a hot part of the world for the entirety of the December so I could ignore the existence of Christmas completely. The previous year £0 because I ignored it at home 😂

BeachPossum · 04/07/2025 22:11

I'd say rough estimates as follows:

presents (husband, son, daughter, parents, siblings, niblings, godchildren, best friend, in laws) - £1500

Activities (panto, steam train, enchanted wood etc) - £300

Annual Christmas party - £500

Tree and other decor - £150

wrapping paper etc - £60

Total: £2,510

We're always at one set of parents for the meal so don't have to pay for food on the day. There is probably other stuff I've forgotten too, there always is.

Starlight40 · 05/07/2025 10:07

Family of 5- £1300 on presents for family
roughly £300 on food
£200 Pantomime
Then more money on Christmas work do, donation to a Christmas toy project. Then there is cards, wrapping paper and stamps. DD may need a new Christmas jumper.x

hattie43 · 06/07/2025 18:54

I’d say about 2k . I only have 6 to buy for and the balance is usually the cost of all the Christmas outings in the run up .

HairyToity · 06/07/2025 18:57

£600 includes presents, food, and a Santa experience. Every other year we do a panto.

Norfolklass2428 · 06/07/2025 21:26

Rough Estimates from Christmas 2024:

presents and stockings £1k

Advent calendars £30

christmas food and drink £500

School fair £20-£30

Food bank £30

Gift wrap and cards £50

Days out/ pantomime/ lights / steam train £250

New decorations £50

Christmas bedding and cushions invested in this for all of us a few years ago £0

Approx 3K

Mum2jenny · 06/07/2025 21:28

Probably between 1-2k, but it varies from year to year.

Helpingabit · 06/07/2025 21:40

Previous years easily up to £2k , probably more

last year I massively cut down, I used to take my nephews out for a pantomime/ Santa train - but it got out of hand so that saved £200 last year , and no one really missed it (I used to enjoy it, but it felt very stressful coordinating it all and pick ups- before I even had three toddlers for the day! )

we decided to book a holiday instead of Christmas gifts for my children (they are 14&18) and only spent £50 on each of them for gifts . I did print out the booking confirmation and hide it in their crackers so it was very exciting.

mum cooked so we only spent about £100 on food and drink , and £25 on a coop delivery of wine and cheese after we had left to say thank you for hosting us!

I want to find a nice balance of having a nice Christmas, but not going overboard with gifts . No body seemed to mind , and having so much less shopping to do was lovely.

I don’t want to be Scrooge mcduck, but also not spending for the sake of it .

WhereOnEarthIsMyPlanet · 06/07/2025 21:42

Probably about £2.5k. We always get lumbered with all hosting so we have the costs of that. 3 children, and we spend about £300 per child. We always take the kids to London to see a show/do some christmas shopping/look at the lights/stay in a nice hotel in December, and we always do ice skating and a Santa visit too. Haven’t bought any new decorations for years as we have plenty, but I do buy 2 real trees for the house.

Bridport · 06/07/2025 21:49

The only people I know who spend less on Christmas than we do are Tom and Barbara Good.
